Rebar Tying

This Skills video shows how to make the most common ties in rebar when using tie wire. The ties and their names match the CRSI, Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, books. These ties are the same that would be in a small concrete landing at the storage shed door, or huge concrete abutments for a bridge.

Nice video... you need to pull on the wire against the bar with your pliers and then twist; don't just twist and twist until tight, the wire will break.
@Stan_in_Shelton_WA
@Stan_in_Shelton_WA 4 года назад
Also it is very critical that both wires twist into the winding. If one wire twist around the other the central wire twists and will break before adequate tension is achieved.

Really nice presentation of the various ties with different styles. The yellow contrast with the rebar showed well as you explained. I used to use simple wire and tie like much of your video showed but as I have gotten older (and always seem to have less time) I have become a fan of the 'loop' ties. Cheers!

Thanks. The loop ties or bag ties are nice but I always seem to try and get them too tight and end up snapping the wire.

Awesome videos on the different ties for rebar. Great explanation, examples, and overall presentation. You definitely need to work on your technique, but since I doubt your career is rodbusting then it's sort of a moot point, just if you want to know, you should use the pliers as a lever to take the slack out of your wire before twisting home and you won't have to twist so much and you'll get a tighter tie, that and you should have your pliers closer to the bar on the wire than the end of the wire.

How many ties would an average worker be able to tie using the single tying with a cutter in a day of 10 work hours?
@DanSarahMakers
@DanSarahMakers 6 лет назад
Yikes, that is a really tough question to answer, but.... If a rod buster was tying stacked offset wall mats on the flat that already had the bar laid out and they never had to reload their wire reel, take a break, or stretch. I would say a tie every 3-4 seconds would be expected. That would place them in the range of about 9,000-12,000 ties in a work day. That is not reality though, so I would say a couple of thousand would be really good. Start getting into pilasters, columns, grade beams, and other heavily reinforced and congested components and that number might drop to only a few hundred especially if they are placing bar. This is why we estimate bar installation by the ton and take into account where the bar is being used.

Welding rebar is not allowed by code(CRSI and ACI). It weakens the bar at the point of welding and can easily break.

I'm not a pro and can't tie as fast as you can obviously, but not very many people are blessed with watching real rod busters tie mats all day and struggle to thread bar through pile caps. Yes, when I have tied bar in slabs, footing, and walls i will pull on the wire to draw the bar up tight and even double up on the wire for the hard pulls. I even know the trick about heeling the pliers against the bar.

@DanSarahMakers
@DanSarahMakers Год назад
What local do you belong to if I may ask kind sir! No, I am not a rod buster by trade, but I know how these things work and I was a superintendent that oversaw structural concrete contractors on a half-billion dollar project including the iron workers that installed the bar. I had to deal with the inspectors when the bar hardly ever was installed with the correct cover, spacing, and so on. I am disappointed that most rod busters will blindly install what is sent to site in the wrong location or without the proper cover because they don't know how or have the ability to field fabricate anything now days. It is always easier to blame someone else and make a bigger problem so that you can come back, tear it apart and do it over again and delay a project. These are Union Professionals I am referring to. Over the past 6 or so years, there was so much construction that almost every trade was allowing just about anyone to buy their cards. I became a journeyman carpenter in 2000, but a lot of scabs bought their cards and knew almost nothing of their trade these last few years and had superiority complexes because they were now "union" trades people. Where are you in that timeline? Oh, and I'm left handed so until Klein makes plyers correctly, I guess they will be backwards!
@steeltown416
@steeltown416 Год назад
@@DanSarahMakers Greetings from California Local 416 Ironworkers!! No two Tradesman are made alike! So the problems that you are speaking of are indicative of poor leadership both by the Ironworker and Supervisor alike. I've seen inept Superintendents and Inspectors misread and misinterpret the plans and specs. I have well over 20 years in the trade. If you are a carpenter by trade post a video banging in a nail. You are by no means in a position to teach Rebar because you put up a form or two during a concrete pour .I'm a JIW, not a book buyer.
