I still have the original Sand Scorcher I received as a Christmas present. Fond memories building it with my Dad. Merry Christmas.

I still have my Rough Rider I got when I was a kid in 1981. I saved and saved to get it. Of course I had to get the Sand Scorcher body-kit as well😊. I also remember the original U-joints were made of brass and wore out quickly because the metal was so soft. Cheers!

I wish more women would get into this hobby. I got my wife into driving Rock Crawler trucks. She is still learning but seems to like it. We can go outside, we can stay safe and have fun and avoid COVID-19 too. I also got my kids Rock Crawler trucks too. I am trying to get the whole family involved. I do not think I can get my wife to build an R/C car, but maybe in the future. I will get her to watch your video on RU-vid. Thank You!

i bought one when it first came out, in early 80's.it has be said this truly iconic

Servo saver is on the front body mounting post, they didn't put them at the servo itself back then.... (If you use a more modern style at the servo, Id suggest strongly finding a way to keep the front post mount saver from having any movement at all.. you'll have zero steering control especially with the locked rear end... Still have my original 80's model! ) Love seeing that Tamiya was faithful in the recreation of this kit (except my front bumper was grey, and I hated that, so I painted mine black. Nice touch to include a black one in the kit now!

The servo saver is on the front body post ( the bit with the giant circlip) you don’t need one on the servo as well, it is soft as it is. But love an srb!

This was the first encounter with RC cars as a little boy. Man, love it.

A good REAR suspension replacement is the Tamiya C.V.A Mini Shock Unit Set 2 (part 50519). For the front however, you can use the springs from the battery box locks and put them in between the shock body and the brass head (around the shaft).

This is one RC that has eluded me. Ever sense I was a kid. I'm still waiting to get one ..

The inverted dampers is not a bad idea. Many people building 1/24th scale crawlers mount them inverted and find they seem to work better for those tiny dampers.

Nice build, this was my very forst RC car, back in the mid 80's lol. The suspension is based on the actual VW Beetle, torsion bars on the rear and the same setup as the proper car on the front. So much detail (If a pain in the rear to put together in this kit) I need to get myself another as I keep seeing this beauty popping up on my YT feed lol

Great job. I never built a Sand Scorcher before. I still have my original Super Champ. I'm gonna do a new one of these when they come out.

I’m caught up now and have built my Christmas present Sand scorcher to the same stage. Looking forward to seeing the painting process and the finished buggy!

I had an original Sand Scorcher and yes, you had to position the shocks upside down to stop leaks. Cam locks havent improved! The little box at the front was where originally the large 27Mhx Rx went. The hump battery pack fitted at the back of the tub across the chassis. Everything was a tight fit! Shame the trick for clearing up the house didnt work!

I have to laugh, I gave away the one I bought last year. As if my great nephew won't have enough going on at UNI! So I've bought another this year, well, looking at the recommended retail price of £379, which will prolly be approaching £400 next year, I decided to go with Sussex Model Center's offer price of £313. Hehe, I just offered the SS body shell up to a Traxxas Rustler chassis, it looks epic!!!!!!!!

That trans looks like it could fit the Traxxas bandit/rustler VXL hardened steel gears

Would be happy to have one standard, or full size replica ( nowhere near enough pocket money lmao ) they are such an iconic car. I tweak my torsion bars. I ride mine with a soft suspension and the ride height is 1/4” lower. It floats on the suspension. I recommend you try it if you can.

Looking at those shocks, what about a set of Old Man Emu Nitrochargers? Not sure if the sizes are compatible, but they'd give a scale look which I think would look appropriate on that vehicle.

That brings back memories watching you build that & it doesn’t look like Tamiya changed much from the original? I still have my Ford Ranger which my mother got me for Christmas In the late 70’s early 80’s “ I think! ” I restored it back to it’s former glory long before Tamiya ruined things by introducing the re-make and spent a fortune purchasing original new old stock from around the world, it’s just stored in a box awaiting the prices to rise again “hopefully” I even have an original new in box old stock complete Ford Ranger body kit (unassembled) I’ve just got to finish off it’s display stand and I think I will sell it I think! it’s to good to use I would say it’s better than what it originally was out the box. Would love to have the time for a hobby like this.

I owned a rough rider from the 70's which is identical to this kit. Here's some major downfalls in the design: I'm hoping the carbon fibre deck is more rigid than the FRP deck from the original. What happens is the way the body is mounted you end up breaking the body due to the mounting points. You can do two things: put some rubber grommets or foam in between the screws that hold down the clip that attaches to the rear roll bar, that allows the body to flex. Or you can put a metal bar running from the rear roll bar to the front mounting post. The tie rods for the steering adjustment need to be turnbuckles. You have to clip them on and off to adjust toe in and out and they break very easily where the rod screws in to the ball end. I used to go through at least 2 a day.

Which kit is that VW with the number 53 on it? Looks very nice!

The ball DIff is a pathetic upgrade! The nylon gears really do not last very long if want big to run a 3000kv brushless system, the brass upgrade is up better choice if you can find them! A metal Spur Gear is a must as well! You can also use the electronic cover lock springs in the rear shocks, they fit perfect! if you decide not to use the rear dampeners and eliminate The torsion bars! Great build!
