Very interesting to see this! Clever use of projections to set the mood in the small Charring Cross space. Hope a Broadway production still happens some day. Brilliant bit of physical acting by Kara Lane at the end of the title song, as Mrs. Danvers snaps back to reality after getting lost in her thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

Well, you have answered my mind Aurora, I have wanted this to happen for so long, the English Premiere of Rebecca, it's clear the star of this is Kara Lane as Mrs. Danvers, I saw her years ago in the UK Tour of Rocky Horror as Magenta, Danvers clear menacing nature while showing her devotion to Rebecca is present here. The scenery was like the reviews said was flat, but again it's at the Charing Cross Theatre which is off West End and is so is understandable, I wish there was a clip of the fire scene to see how that worked in the confirmed space. I hope this is the start of other foreign-language musicals having English language versions coming over here.

Honestly, they should have kept the demo lyrics for the title song. It sounds clunky as hell.

So glad that Rebecca finally got an English production after all that fiasco on Broadway, even though it's a scaled back production.

The set is underwhelming yes, but I really love Mrs Danvers' acting here

I saw this production on the West End last year. The cast was impeccable. The orchestrations were stunning, but the set design and over all production value was extremely underwhelming. If it weren't for the cast and orchestra, I would've thought it was a community theater production. No dis-respect to community theatre, but for the price of the tickets I would've expected a more.

SO there was never a soundtrack developed from this production? The translations are ok, but man they choose fitting actors for these roles. I would've loved to hear the whole musical with them.

I think they should have recorded this London production. They went to the expense of hiring a sizable orchestra to give the score the pop-operatic sound it needs, and the leads all sang well. A recording would have led to additional productions. Perhaps they thought that further work needed to be done on the English lyrics.

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Its such a waste to do that and not do a recording. You're right, the orchestration here is phenomenal, it sounded so grand for a underground theatre production. I was trying to figure out if this was prerecorded instrumentals as it sounded so huge.

As a huge fan of both musical theatre and gothic literature, I'll never understand how this musical became such a massive hit in Germany. To me, Rebecca is just a campy curiousity. The prosiac lyrics of this translation don't help.

The show became an enormous hit in AUSTRIA. It's only German Stuttgart run (December 2011 - January 2013) was just averagely successful.

I saw it in Vienna in 2007 not long after it had first opened. It was on a huge scale with enormous sets and effects - including a stunt-double for Mrs Danvers who ran across the stage on fire in the final scene as she destroys the house. They cut that from all future versions of that production, presumably as it cost so much to pay a stunt double just for 30 seconds of work! That original run worked brilliantly and I loved it. It has evolved a lot over time and the German lyrics and original orchestrations remain superb and perfectly fitting to the tone, and uses direct and near-direct lines from the book in many songs. The most recent run in Vienna has the same sets and most of the same costumes (though the ball is now blue and gold not red and pink as it originally was, and it looks bad, especially Mrs van Hopper’s costume now - she was added to the ball scene to give the supporting actress more to do), but it isn’t as good. The effects have been improved and updated, largely. As for the lyrics used in London, there must be about 5 recorded English versions of the title song and none of them has the emotion or darkness of the German version. I think much like “Elisabeth”, “Kristina Fran Duvemåla” and even “Les Misérables”, a lot is lost in translation or simply cannot be translated. Remember that Fantine’s original Paris 1980 big number «L’air de la Misère» proved so impossible to translate into English whilst keeping the tone and meaning that they deleted it completely for the 1985 English version and recycled the tune for Eponine as “On My Own”. Translation always loses something and in the case of “Rebecca”, a lot. Doing it in a small venue without effects or grandeur also loses something too, sadly.
