This movie was strange. At first romance, then thriller, getting close to a horror (that's what I thought) then suddenly drama, criminal and drama again. Cool!
So the late Mrs. de Winter is Elio? Their love couldn't be accepted at that time so Elio faked his death to make Oliver get over him... haha I'm thinking too much
Yes, as Jazzmine mentioned, you'll find a shift when they get to the house. After all, the summery, pastel vibe isn't really Ben Wheatley's style. I actually found this darker than Hitchcock's 1940 masterpiece. The book is definitely even more dark and gothic, but I think this new adaptation's worth a watch. Don't let the trailer discourage you. :)
I love how everyone is going on about Lily and Armie (nice actors that they are), when lefts face it, Kristin Scott-Thomas is gonna totally rule this movie
She is not a rich girl. She is poor, young and naive. Obsviously never read the novel. Its about something else... (in the Book, the young woman her name never is revealed).
Mrs. Danvers might have been cold and distant but she was not posh - she was a servant that had been with Rebecca since she was a child. That's my complaint about her casting. Kristen Scott Thomas definitely has a posh vibe and comes across as too intelligent. She'd be perfect for Rebecca if there any flashbacks of that character.
Damn... The way people were talking about Rebecca. She was a wonder woman, a legend, she couldn’t even be real. I was so embarrassed for the new wife... Omg. But the end was unexpected. Rebecca was not that perfect. Great movie
That's what makes it even better and also, the second wife doesn't even have a first name to ever be mentioned. When I read the book, I was waiting the entire time to know her name but I think that was intentional because she was living in Rebecca's shadow. It's a great book. This movie depicted it very well.
Even she doesn't have a picture in her room and between her staff ...you don't get it ? Rebecca is just a myth she doesnt exist just in our mind the perfect portrait"" the obssession of the perfect lady and perfect picture no body is perfect 👌 Evry one has a dark side ...to be pure and simple like his new wife is the real beauty
At first I'm like "Do we REALLY need yet ANOTHER adaptation of this novel?" but I have to admit, the casting is spot on and it looks pretty damn good. So yea, I guess we did need another.
To be fair it’s been quite a while. And the Hitchcock version is the only real film adaptation. Everything else is television. And i think it’s nice go have a 21st century adaptation for modern audiences who weren’t aware of the novel or aren’t interested in old movies. This is at least an interesting story with complex female characters so i don’t see the problem since it’s been ages since the last adaptation
@@rameezqaisar1065 yeah that makes sense as well regret is something which can't be surpassed even if we try are best we can be happy but that one regret will haunt us till death and hate can be turned as weapon. Hate can form any shape whether it's manipulation, horror , even anger.
@@anninriverside755 A lot of people know the Shining. Kubrick's version is notoriously different than the book but loved for the changes it made because it was still scary and the technical aspects of how it was filmed. If you want a more book accurate version, there's a 90s miniseries version of it. But beware, the cgi is not very good and it comes off as very corny and hilarious sometimes when its supposed to be scary lol
Obviously... is really hard to explaine words with imagens. Specially if the "story" Must to last just two hours. I didnt watch the movie yet, but always Books wins to any "visual" adaptation, because people "create" that world with their imagination and maybe the imagen, the atmosphere in a movie cant compare as their imagen in their mind. That is the reason Why we continue reading Books...
I'm scared I love my old movies they did them well better than the crap that we have now that was paid so much attention to the details the suspense in the atmosphere was always so great and I love the acting I hope they don't mess this up this is one of my favorite movies who can beat Joan Fontaine and Sir Laurence Olivier
@@jackdonohue7893 It very well could be nominated. Directed by Ben Wheatley, Screenplay by Jane Goldman, a cast that includes Lily James, Armie Hammer, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Keeley Hawes, and a score by Clint Mansell. Plus those costumes and that cinematography.
I first read this in high school and just LOVED it. I have been waiting for a movie that did the book justice and this looks stunning in so many ways. Armie and Lily are fabulous.
It's an interesting and ballsy choice to make Rebecca feel grounded in reality, the book and the movie both made that universe feel like a vampy fairytale gone wrong, where Manderley was this otherworldly place. I think they're deliberately trying to flesh out the environment, make the settings, the clothing, the sociopolitical environment more concrete, demonstrate a more modern Rebecca-it almost reads as Gatsby-like in tone. The question is whether it will come at the expense of the story.
I like that Kristen Scott Thomas is going for a different take on Mrs Danvers making her less ghostly and more threatening in a subtle way. l can see this Mrs Danvers being a lot more believable to psychologically torture the young second Mrs De Winter. It’s hard to compare with Judith Anderson’s iconic performance in the 1940 film but doing something different is the right way to go. It looks wonderful. Maybe I’m very premature but I’m sensing early Oscar buzz for costumes, production and maybe Lily James. This Second Mrs De Winter seems a lot less waifish and more of an interesting psychological journey than other versions. Maybe one for Anderson as well.
Oh I hope you're right! Although it would be a shame to loose too many of the subtleties of the original material. I am hoping the trailer has merely picked the more blunt scenes of the film.
I have been obsessed with Hitchcock's Rebecca since I saw it in the 80s (while working at Blockbuster Video), and have read the novel several times as well as watched the BBC adaptation with the late Diana Riggs...and I'm COMPLETELY into this adaptation---Kristen Scott Thomas can do no wrong in my book!
Fred Howard I like how each of the three big adaptations of Rebecca has focused on a different element the 1940 version focused on the gothic suspense elements the 1997 on the period mystery elements this version focusing on the dark romance aspects
The book is an absolute classic of literature and this looks like a particularly attractive adaptation of Rebecca. I think the casting of Kristin-Scott Thomas is brilliant!
Even though this year, only because of the pandemic, a movie with any planned theatrical release will have Oscar eligibility if it premieres on a streaming service within the 2020 deadline.
At first the book was slow but when it picked up Jesus Christ I could not put it down. Read the book first and now about to watch the movies. But will start with Hitchcock’s version first
@@44r0n-9 Or maybe just not garbage. Just not to your taste. I don't like everything on Netflix, but I understand that they're trying to appeal to more than just me.
Armie really deserves to shine with his underrated acting skills. It would be such a shame to put such a handsome face to waste. I cant wait to see him in more, bigger movies❤️
i watched that apple music interview!! and a few weeks later we started reading ‘Rebecca’ in my English class, and my teacher was a total swiftie so we both got really excited over it
Daphne was inspired by Jane Eyre but this book is much more depressing. Jane Eyre still had a bit of sunshine and butterflies at the end but Rebecca felt a bit darker due to the ongoing trauma suffered by both.
I just saw the movie, and trust me it’s worth the watch!! Very interesting and suspenseful till the end! And an unexpected twist occurs near the end making it even more exciting!!
Rebecca is a gothic novel for sure, but there's no supernatural element or a ghost per se. Looks like the movie has it.. Will have to see how the movie actually turns out
The original story was written by Carolina Nabuco in 1934 a famous Brazilian writer and had her work copied by Daphne after it was translated to English. Daphne’s lawyers offered a lot of money for Carolina to sign a document back then. It’s a scandal amongst writers. Search for info! The story is unbelievable! Plot twist!
The trailer looks awesome, but worth flagging that Maurier is known today to have been a plagirist. Rebecca's book is actually a copy (plagirism) of Brazillian book "A Sucessora" by Carolina Nabuco. Mrs. Nabuco, originally sent her book to a French publisher who she later found out was also Maurier's publisher, but only after Rebecca had already become a worlwide success... The novels have identical plots and even some identical episodes. I really hope Netflix honors Mrs. Nabuco's memory and family by giving her the credits she deserverd 80 years ago.
@@amaliaputrimaharani5446 haven't you read the novel. In India we had it in our school course in 8th grade. Well it's not horror. It's just a feeling .
The movie is disappointing......the book is a classic and the movie doesn’t do justice to the superb writing. Even visually the book is more vibrant and atmospheric than this adaptation. And the movie feels rushed not giving the viewers a chance to enjoy the setting.
I totally agree.... Maxim isn't a romantic and he isn't passionate about his love for narrator and that's the beauty... But in this movie directors forced in really unnecessary romance...also, last part of the book is the best and they just completely ruined it....I agree, they tried to showcase narrator as a strong woman but that's no apt atleast not in this story
@@srivani3376 Totally. The book is terrific, on every level, and very ahead of its time, as a mystery novel, in terms of plot and character development. Daphne Du Maurier was a very underrated writer, and some of her other books are almost as good as Rebecca, like Jamaica Inn and The Scapegoat, or even better (My Cousin Rachel)
Just finished watching the film and needed to find a place to share my disappointment! The story falls flat. The book is amazing in so many ways e.g. when the narrator gives her first impression of the scenery around Manderley, you can visualize the beauty. Where are the crimson flowers? Happy Valley? Those scenes that were the most tense in the book just are anticlimactic in this film. That a shame to be honest. I really looked forward to this adaptation...
AHHHHHHHH IM SO EXCITED!!!! I remember watching the 1997 version (starring Charles Dance) on RU-vid and falling in love with the story. I can’t wait to see this since its starring some of my favorite actors like Lily James, Sam Riley, Armie Hammer, Kelsey Hawes 😆💖
This remake was so amazing! Does a stellar job of both honoring Daphne Du Maurier's classic novel and putting it's own inventive spin on it! The acting is superb, especially the always wonderful Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas (who is absolute perfection as Mrs. Danvers). The critics were so unfair to it, yet for some reason they adored Armando Iannucci's remake of David Copperfield which frankly made a barefaced joke out of Dickens.
lonely traveler ‘I follow’ by hidden citizen. It has not been released yet. A lot of artist you hear in trailers exclusively did the song for the trailer. Like Ruelle
I saw him once in an airport. He was being paged as "Armand Hammer" (dude, is that anymore incognito? ;-/) and walked right past me. [I wasn't surprised, because I'd just come from an area in Colorado where I was told that he was going to be filming. This was for "The Lone Ranger", w/ Johnny Depp.] He's very tall!
Just saw the original version from hitchcock's Rebecca in 1940. His first film in north america. More close to the gothic dark novel. It was stunning..
It comes out on Oct 21 2020 on NetFlix. Armie Hammer best performance. Of course, Armie Hammer was great in Call Me By Your Name too. I love Armie Hammer in Call Me By Your Name.
Man, I am still trying to make up my mind on this movie. It’s excellently produced, also quite romantic. But some parts of the plot are just really not very logical... It was beautiful to watch them fall in love. Worth seeing it. ;-)
I just finished the book and was interested in watching the movie too, but it kinda seems to be different from what I imagined. I actually imagined the characters quite differently, and the whole atmosphere much darker. But at the same time it seems to be a good movie, so I hope it doesn't disappoint!

there are MUCH better adaptations of Rebecca (my fav being the one from 1997 with Charles Dance); I had high hopes with this one but sincerely couldn't stand it despite Kristin Scott Thomas who is one of my fav actresses and what I found to be the only good thing in this movie.
