For people that dont know, a real life 39yr old retired marine was pulled over by police and he happened to have $87,000 on him. His LIFE savings. The cops stole his money and didn't even give him a ticket for why they pulled him over, never charged him with a crime, nothing. Just stole his life savings. Im assuming this movie is loosely (at least the part about the cops stealing his money) based on that.
I love the non-lethal take of the marine’s character. Talk about a man that knows he has power but does not abuse it. Refreshing to see from all the John Wick like movies as of late.
Have you noticed that smaller films on Netflix tend to be much better than the very expensive ones from big Hollywood directors and stars like Zack Snyder, etc.?
Nobody goes to cinemas to see anything costing under $150 million according to studios, plus they rush everything to Video On Demand in 6 to 7 weeks. Why do you think AMC, Regal and Cinemark are in problems? The value of AMC stock was at $640 a share in June 2021 and now $5 in August 2024. Studios would release this if they could make it for under $20 million, factoring in marketing and distribution costs. But really they see it as a B-movie. The leading star is unknown to most people, so....
@@matthewprince9705 it’s because of the common trend in modern media between video games and movies; smaller studios are more willing to take risks than big studios, and often times those risks can prove to be very profitable- but because big studios are so concerned about making money, they see the risk as a liability.
Unfortunately, it's been like this with all movies since covid, even if in theaters, you can still watch it on one of the movie app channels for a cost
Aaron Pierre is a British actor who played in a couple other movies but the first I saw him was in unlimited series on Amazon prime called underground railroad where he played a runaway who tried to start a new life but later had to run again. I always thought he was so fine. lol
just watched it, and i had to come here and just say that this is probably my favourite movie of the year...didnt know the actor and this dude is a beast, great performance. great story, yeah 10/10 for me.
A lot of people (me included) would usually assume this is mindless action crap. But be aware writer / director Jeremy Saulnier has made sharp intelligent films in the past which puts this in the must see category. It’s also about #$@# time some major film or series talked about the utterly corrupt practices where police can legally steal people’s money w/o consequences.
Civil Forfeiture where police can decide if they find a "suspicious amount" of money on you, they'll seize it and sometimes even "forget" to give you an evidence slip. So if the money was taken and there's no record: whoops, your word against ours, better luck next time!
The plot, the cast, the script, the execution all tight! My teeth were on edge from the first minute to the last. Jeremy Saulnier is fast becoming one of my favorite director/auteurs. Also …this isn’t a remake of anything. Finally.
This movie was shot in my hometown Leesville Louisiana it was a honor to see the behind the scenes and also see the first star actor John boyega but Aaron stepped up and did tremendously well. Can’t wait to see it
Just got done watching this. Sis put it on without explaining. From start to finish i was glued to the screen. Each minute was suspenseful and felt heavy. Rollercoaster from start to finish that i highly recommend
@@Catchyalater_Fishing_Co Not really. First Blood was about cops harassing a vet (Rambo) for being a different (a drifter). This movie is about cops stealing a vet's money.
@@TheVeritas1 so the cops more or less cross a drifter vet that turns out to be a 1 man army and turns the town into a warzone right? yea thats First Blood
So proud to have my tune KEEP GOING” featured in Rebel Ridge. This great uncompromising movie really reflects the spirit of what I’ve always aimed to convey in my music and the fact that it’s such a huge hit is just incredible. Salute to the filmmakers and all involved and thanks to all of you for checking it out.
I just watched it last night as a random selection without knowing anything, one of those films you are glued till the end. It did give me Rambo vibes, the intro was obviously a nod. That's a good track.
Yup it happens all the time. Interstate highway by Atlantic City have been known to get shakedowns from the cops..I heard ppl getting all the prize winning taken from them boys..my buddy from college worked as a card dealer an he had to get a police scanner & radio In his whip to dodge em..cuz he got stopped a lot!
This movie WAS CRAZY !!! His performance was soo powerful his eyes r crazy beautiful that his scene was powerful I replayed it two times it showed me like you have to keep that type of life force even when they try to destroy your spirit POWERFUL
The movie was a mess. The script was bad and too long. I do like the character, but how it was all put together was not good and could have been much better. What about The Marine, what's his story? How about the Sheriff, Judge, woman and the Chinese Korean War Vet who fought for the Chinese?
@erichvonmolder9310 what are you yapping about? It wasn't their story, it was his. God, you guys need to be spoonfed everything these days. That's why we get nothing but movies with boring self referential humor.
@@amorojaz27yea he’s a cool azz dude. You couldn’t tell he was from England, he covered that accept very well. Barely ever caught a hint of it when he was on set.
You right, in the sense of just season 1 and the overall books and characters. Big dude with military background comes to small town because of family, finds the town police to be corrupt, befriends the only good blond female officer, and kicks butts. How is that not season 1 of Reacher?
Didn't realize this was Jeremy Saulnier's next film... His movies are hit or miss with me, but when they hit, they hit. This honestly feels like a proper modernization of First Blood. Which seems very straight-forward for Saulnier's style but that makes me eager to see what he does with it.
I'm a little old grandma who isn't into action movies but I let this one play because I clicked on it by mistake. As I had to stop knitting because Wow! What a great movie. Now I'm here to give my review. All the actors where great. I'm watching it agin tonight but this time with my grandsons 😂
A Jeremy Saulnier action flick?! I’m in. Wish it wasn’t on Netflix because it’s yet another Saulnier movie I’ll never get to own! Release Hold the Dark on Blu-ray!!!!
Pretty naive, it's not about asset forfeiture, it's about black ppl be victims. If they're white nobody cares and you should move along. This movie EMBRACES the system.
He's really been killing these roles lately! He's still quite young, but I won't be surprised if he made it to Denzel status in these next few years! ❤❤❤
I've never seen a human quite as beautiful as this man! Aaron's performance was phenomenal, he is an phenomenal actor! Easily one of the best movies I've ever seen in my entire life! Netflix stepped up the game with this one. I could see him play in movies such as Bad Boys remake, he would embody Will's role so perfectly. He deserves so much recognition. What a beast 🔥
This movie needs to get an award for so many reasons I cant even comprehend. Great acting-suspence and makes you think the amount of corruption in the US and Canada. Evil never goes away it lurks in small towns and I live in one but Im way to old to fight so I Pray to all small towns to FIGHT-dont take the corruption just FIGHT>
@@jenslindholm2297copy huh? Everything in it? Don’t think so pal. You might want to actually compare them before writing a lame ass comment like that 😂
Really interested to see Jeremy Saulnier do what looks like a more straightforward action movie. For the people here who hasn't seen his most well-known movies, Blue Ruin and Green Room (both highly recommended), they're both interesting in that they sound like action movies on paper but are actually very grim and low-key. The brutal violence isn't Epic John Wick Shit, it's all filmed very flat and straightforward, and because it's so brutal but so understated it's the kind of movie violence you feel deep in your gut in an "oh shit that could happen to me" way. Wonder how this movie's gonna play its violence.
i didnt even realize this was the same guy. im honestly stoked now. green room was insanely tense, the violence felt visceral and real. Blue ruin is more of a slow burn but the action again very tense and real, its not these crazy martial arts fights scenes where its a flurry of blows being blocked by opponents, its just down n dirty fighting for your life. the arm break/boxcutter from green room i still have to look away from when watching and blue ruins final scene, while having a few deaths leading up to it, was almost a complete 180 from how slow and quiet the rest of the film actually is. I knew it was building and building to the finale but when it finally popped off it still hit just as hard. character building is good and while the stories are basic he does a very good job making it feel believable.
Yeah, the trailer's tone doesn't fit Saulnier but maybe that's just an advertising thing. I'm hoping the movie itself will be more in the vein of his other work. Looks like it might be pretty brutal. Excited to see what that grenade launcher does lol
@@supercommieguru Definitely think it's a case of the director's style being buried by the trailer's editing, there's a sense of very human panic and desperation to that bit where the cop throws a gun through the window and the main character floors it while being shot at that really reminds me of Blue Ruin. Like "these characters aren't super-skilled gunfighters, they're just winging it through the violence as best they can and not doing a very outstanding job of it."
@@dracenines oh yeah good point. If it's anything like his other movies it'll be pretty funny when a bunch of normie suburban dads who saw the marketing sit down to watch this expecting Walking Tall and encounter the most gut wrenching violence they've ever seen
@@dropdead.1 This movie was softer than baby poo....the way they would avoid killing people....reminded me of that goofy A-Team shit of the 80's. Not a pimple on Rambo's ass
Went into it blind, never seen trailer, just seen it was #1 in Canada on Netflix and #1 download on my go to torrent site so threw it on and man, so good, the pacing is perfect, the writing is smart, some great one liners, really bad ass character. It's different in that he's not on the hunt for them but on the hunt for something else and when they get in his way he has to out manoeuvre them, whether physically or mentally but a fight isn't his main goal, it's just survival and that goes for them as well. It's hard to explain without giving away the plot. Not too many names here or any prior knowledge of the movie, so I was expecting the typical low budget, bad acting, corny action shit that is half fun to watch and laugh at but I was really impressed, it's very original and very well made.
This is honestly one of the best movies I've ever seen. It doesn't push too hard about racism, it's more about corrupt cops and someone's ability to tap into their instincts.
Hey Netflix.. lets already start up Rebel Ridge 2, please? And this time i want the chief to be Tubs.. you know, lets create a canon where the old Miami Guys turned out to be what they always hunted.. Aaron Pierre is the EQ 4 we needed.. LETS GO
Something similar to this happening in Florida when a NYCHA police officer was pulled over with his life savings. He was going to use that money to buy a house, but it was confiscated by the police and no rationale was given. He whined up suing the police department and getting all of his money back. Yes Florida is pretty racist and it kind of sucks.
6.7/10 nothing flashy but gets the job done, one of the movies you can watch and be entertained by but nothing to write home about. Aaron Pierre pretty good actor
Aaron Pierre is a fantastic actor, he's in a film called Brother with Lamar Johnson which is written and directed Clement Virgo. Great indie film, it's really powerful. I highly recommend it. You guys should check out the trailer
All the talk about the ‘nah’ line but my favorite from the movie was when he said to meet at first light so he could see what he’s walking into, then said they were lucky, because maybe they could see him coming.
This looks good despite the generic feel and that’s for one key reason: writer and director Jeremy Saulnier. His first two films Blue Ruin and Green Room are easily the best thrillers in modern cinema, especially for the indie scene and show his ability of making violence meaningful, shocking, and powerful without overdoing it. Definitely have high hopes for this!
He also should have been a star like five years ago. It’s a shame that the roles he has gotten in his two most high profile movies (“Foe” and “Rebel Ridge”) were the result of him having to replace actors who had to be let go or departed those movies in late stages.
That's like suggesting Ryan Reynolds should play Black Panther. Good actor, but that role doesn't fit him what so ever. Can we please stop with the silly race swapping roles, and make some original characters?
@@Cimlite no it isn't. Because newsflash: One of James Bonds specific qualities that makes him James Bond is not the fact that he is white. Black Panther is African and is a movie specifically about black Culture. So No your argument doesn't fly. 2ndly why not race swap this role? Black actors just want opportunity just like any white one does. Why does it offend you so much to see a black person do a role you're used to seeing a white actor? Maybe question that.
@@jasonmarleyrain6226 Would you say the same thing about Snow White then? Her being not-white doesn't matter either? Or how about race swapping Cleopatra? Or Anne Boleyn? Or The Little Mermaid. The reason it bothers me is because these historical figure and characters aren't black. It's as simple as that. Why doesn't that bother you, should be the question. James Bond is a white British, male, character. It's really that simple.
@@Cimlite is The White in Snow Whites name referring to her race? If yes then the character is racist in design and deserves no reverence. If no then obviously any ethnic group could play her. And really your need for some kind of racial purity in casting is sending some major red flags here.
@@dropdead.1 Are you saying it's not good? If that's your opinion, that's find, everyone has their own idea's about what's good or not. As for me, I decide what I will watch and if I like it, not someone else.
I was hoping this was a mini-series, but I'll survive a single movie. Despite the weird digital bike crash in the beginning, it looks like it can have some solid action, believable characters, and a fresh take on the hero in a small town. Also, who else noticed how gorgeous the main character is?
Justwatched This actor and the script are amazing. Nothing excessive, but just enough to enjoy from start to finish. Most impressive is the look and efficiency of the lead actor as he moves into action. It's almost confusing that his movements are so natural, no need to raise his voice or give big looks to settle disputes.
This movie was too good! I will watch again and again and again! 🤪Aaron Pierre's deep voice was perfect for this role and his eyes tell a story. He was just phenomenal! My new favourite actor!!!🔥🔥🔥✨💯👋💖
Movie was really good. No awkward romance shit, interesting story pacing, even his backstory was unique. You think he's this kind of main character but he breaks the mold organically. Story and writing was very good. A bit of complexity too, watch it.
not even atleast he used the shotgun n was ready to use it how it should be use unracking a shotgun n throwing isn't the proper use of that firearms dumb concept
You and me the same. Saw this a while ago and today wifey looking at it doesn't even know what the movie's about. Told her to hold up she ain't watching it without me!
