We have been traveling with only one engine for about 6 months. St. Martin is an island with many resources so it is time to start the rebuild! Part one includes building an engine stand, disconnecting everything, removing it from the engine compartment, cleaning, and dissasembleing. The entire rebuild process will be done in the cockpit of our sailboat!

Billy if you need help reach out. I have rebuilt plenty of marine diesels. You need to pull the oil sump off and check for metal, that chunk you found is a sign that there may be more down there. Likely a bit of piston or liner.

I am following you as usual. I worked in a machine shop that rebuilt engines at one time. Would like to get my hands dirty but I am in Ontario Canada and 83 years. Take your time and all will work out. Like how you improvise when you don't have a tool. The linners may be wet or dry. hope for wet easier to remove. Will look forward to next video.

Good on you to rebuild that engine. It's definitely a task you can handle if you do your research and have some mechanical ability. Go slow and double check everything. Buy or borrow a torque wrench. This is one job where "that feels right" doesn't cut it. Hone those cylinders and lap those valves.

Use a small spray bottle to "mist" in a little fresh water in the intake while the engine is running at working temp. This will react with and clean the carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber and intake and exhaust ports & valves.

Big time gear head here, which made this video so enjoyable to watch. :-) Nicely done! Nothing like getting into the muck of an engine and becoming a rebuilding master. With all of the carbon buildup on your Yanmar, you may want to do some Sea Foam treatments and blow out those deposits from time to time. When you do, be sure that you're out at sea because it will smoke like crazy and will disturb your harbor mates (and likely result in a scolding from the authorities).
@jiefflerenard1228
@jiefflerenard1228 4 года назад
after 30 years this is actually not much carbon, the seats look good too .sometime people are afraid to rev-up some to let the engine puke the deposits but it is something that has to be done ,just like changing the oil it is part of the process. BTW Billy might get away with his rebuilt but it is by cutting many corners certainly not by mastering much anything . Sorry I have to give him credit ,yes he is a master of hard work ,no matter the abilities hard work is 99% of the job.

I did not see new piston rods, push rods ( these are probably bent)!!! I never heard of sleeved cylinders but guess it’s easier than having cylinders re-bored with larger piston rings (usually bored .030 over. Cam shaft bearings? Crank bearings. Do you have them? They have to be pressed in and out. Hope you have a torque wrench and specs for all the parts. They all have a torque specification and it’s extremely important to tighten everything properly so you don’t experience large quantities of grief later!!! Spinning a bearing would really suck!!! Good luck Billy! Take your time! Do not rush this job. If you have questions, get answers from qualified mechanic. Do not guess anything! I have rebuilt six engines over the years. The first one did not go well! It made a good run then spun a bearing ! I hate when that happens! Other five re-builds went well. I am not a certified mechanic! I just did not have the cash to pay for the job. You can do this. Just be certain to have the manual for that engine and read it well and follow all the specs precisely. It helps if you can have someone there with some experience be there with you.

make sure you use some sort of assembly lube when assembling the engine. I use STP oil treatment and a brush and a rag. Also before installing your pistons make sure you stagger your rings before installing piston and a hose clamp can make a great ring compressor for getting those piston back in . Nice Job using the rock and the stone there.

Hey Billy, that chunk of steel you found in the sump/oil pan looks suspiciously like a piece of a main bearing, that would also explain the scoring in the sleeve, check the crank journals very carefully for damage, you may have to get it ground, polished and balanced. I'm pretty sure that you will have to get the block rebored, or at least honed, and the head skimmed and pressure tested. Make sure to align your timing chain correctly, torque all bolts in accordance with manufacturers sequence and re-torque after running the engine for at least 10 hours, it must be at operating temperature to do final torque. Unless the head bolts are stretch bolts in which case torque once when cold PS connecting rod/ con rod connects to piston using gudgeon pin. Some more mechanical jargon for you. Cool video, keep em coming. Good luck with the rebuild
@garrettlaster8643

Looks to me like the piston pin worked it’s way loose and was able to walk and score the cylinder. Also like previously said a little skirt slapping goes a long way. The rod eyes are a point of interest for sure. I’d check and recheck to make sure they aren’t out of round. Also when you install the new pistons make sure the gaps are staggered and the cir clips are seated in there grooves. You said something about cleaning too soon, no such thing. The cleaner and more organized you can be the better! Especially when considering the cost of the investment. Keep up the good work, I look forward to see the completed engine!

Those grooves on the cylinder walls are caused from the rings extending too far out of the ring grooves and bending. The rings then cannot go back inside the ring grooves. They get bent between the piston and cylinder wall and create a groove along the cylinder. That problem is caused by extreme cylinder wear and ring wear. The rings and cylinder walls had so must wear, there was not enough ring depth left inside the ring groove to prevent the ring from turning upwards or downwards inside the cylinder. You can probably stick the tip of a screwdriver between the piston and cylinder wall when there is that much wear. A well lubricated engine will last a really long time. Old oil eventually becomes so bad it is like using sandpaper on the cylinder walls and rings. Extreme cylinder wear can result from age or neglect. To find this type problem earlier, check compression on an engine. If any cylinder has low compression, it is time to investigate, before it is too late. Low compression can be caused by valves, cylinder wear, ring wear, or a combination. A simple compression test once a year can often indicate a potential problem within the cylinders. As engines wear, the compression drop between cylinders should remain basically equal. All cylinders gradually wearing evenly over time is normal. All engines wear out over time or lack of proper maintenance. It can take a really long time when well maintained or a short time if not. I'm not saying you did anything wrong. Your engine probably has a zillion hours on it, most of which was put on it by previous owners. Good luck on your rebuild.

If you put a good load on the engine say once a month, the liners will not scuff up and the carbon will burn out over time.

Hi I woul suggest once you are up and running to ensure that you use and additive in your diesel fuel ( if you aren't already) there are many out there, I use a product " diesel power" . It keeps the engine internally cleaner and miminises deposits on the fuel injector system. Also takes care of fungus in the stored fuel. I wouldn't run without it. John

Do not get me wrong I did that kind of jungle thing when I was younger but here is the thing ,there is ABSOLUTELY no point in keeping the head bolts order, it is the push rod that have to be placed where they do belong, so it seems you are not getting the best advises (sorry). You might get the engine running but an other missed detail might shorten its life by some or a lot. So considering the stakes, amount of work and part expenses ,in my experienced (yes call it old) opinion the sensible (no shame) thing to do is bare the block and head as much as possible(leave the crank in) and to take them to a shop .It is not about you ,but it is not a job to be done in a cockpit unless you are stranded and ready to accept a half ass job (you have no way to wash parts and motor properly, no press ,no tools etc and if you are in the tropics the shop expense might be low with the right mechanic with a heart. BTW bore damage is from loose pin (this is what half ass job means and do) and the piece is from a skirt. Life is an adventure I wish you the best.

With all the money those parts cost, wouldn't it have been easier, cheaper, and more convenient to have just bought a new or rebuilt engine? I'm sure that a new or rebuilt engine wouldn't be that expensive ( it's a small engine ) ( only a 2 cylinder engine ). It also would have been a much faster job to just swing the old engine out, and the new one in.The whole job would have been done in 1 or maybe 2 days total. Then you could have gotten some money back on the core from the old engine. You're basically rebuilding that engine anyway. You are also going to need a torque wrench, so you can properly tighten the bolts down to the specified tightness for each bolt.
@gg5115
@gg5115 4 года назад
Apparently you would be surprised at what a replacement engine costs. This was somewhat less than half that cost. And torque wrenches are for sissies. The setting for all the bolts on that engine is "really tight", with the exception of the head, which is "as tight as you can get it."

Yep, that broken piece you had in your hand looked like a piece of piston skirt. The grooves in the sleeve are the result of the wrist pin no longer being retained because something either wore out or broke. I'm not sure how Yanmar retains their wrist pins. If I'm honest I'd load that block and head into the dinghy and take them both to an engine rebuilder. There's a lot of risk involved in reassembly without the usual machining requirements for a complete overhaul, I'd definitely be paying a lot of attention to the crank on this one, I'm pretty convinced that it will need to be, at the very least polished and balanced, more likely the journals ground and oversized mains to suit?? Might even be out of alignment/warped due to bearing failure. Whatever the case it is at least a complete rebuild, including oil pump water pump and clearing the crudd out of the head and block's cooling ports without machining, at worst, all of the above + boring out the old sleeves, fitting and honing the new sleeves, skimming and pressure testing the head and grinding the crank, all of which I'd be inclined to do regardless

@@SoundzAlive1 could be, regardless it's not a good sign, it would be pretty obvious once you took the bottom apart! I'm not there and not Billy, nothing's been filmed in that area so we'll wait till next episode I suppose. Either way with what came out the sump and the scoring on the sleeve, and all the bits of ground up steel that have been circulating around the engine are going to have @#&$ed up almost all running surfaces, oil pump blah blah. I've done enough industrial mechanical engineering and machining to know that there will be damage everywhere that those wee ground up particles of steel be it piston collar or bearing have seen circulated. It will never be right unless all that is sorted properly. PS I'd love to have seen what the oil filter and sump pan looked like😂😂😂

Wow, that is a project! I'll be interested to see how easy it is to replace those cylinder liners.
@callmepokey1
@callmepokey1 4 года назад
they have a liner puller that makes it easy. head has 2 legs that sit on block and 2 legs go into cylinder and hook under lip of cylinder on either side and you turn a bolt and it cranks right up out of there., I used them on big cummins diesels. like you I am excited to see how Billy accomplishes things. I really give him credit on things he tries to accomplish himself over the years.

@@callmepokey1 You can even make your own if necessary (Billy knows a welder). There is a difference between doing hay-wire repairs when you are stranded and you have no choice and being in town and refusing to at least do a proper shop cleaning of the engine with fluids and air pressure and a few other basic checks.It is in my opinion pure stupidity or ego out of control,we all know it is not to save a few hundred dollars.

@@callmepokey1 there is so much inconsistencies in that rebuilt that I call fraud ,you will see that the guy remove the sleeves with a screw driver taping one side at a time (misaligned force if I can say) I do not believe it possible, but my main concern is the cleaning of the engine :the very inside of the water jackets to bare shiny metal, how on a boat with barely a bucket and a tooth brush,come on!!! not a view on the crank shaft reinstall either.

I gave you a thumbs up for rebuilding a diesel engine on the deck of a boat while you're in the water and don't have all the tools most people would have to do this job! You have some stones, I'll give you that.

Good use of that scrap wood and nicely built engine stand! I find this fixit type of video really interesting. Please don't take offense but the sailing, wind surfing and surfboard videos get kind of boring to me after a while. This is a refreshing break from them. Love you guys!

I really wish that you (and a lot of other youtubers) would stop with the fast forward at light speed thing. This is not a substitute for EDITING. It just makes me think, Meh. A noob pulled the motor out of his sailboat and is trying to figure out what broke. All sizzle and no steak dude. I gave up at 4:30.

I can think of alot of tools he is gonna need to or this engine will fail,starting with the head bolts,should be replaced cuz of torque angle stretch on these,and valve seals have to be pressed ,valves polished and reseated and washed to remove compound. then pistons put on connecting rods and not cross matched.crankshaft checked for out of round. bearing tolerances verified with plastiguage,piston sleeves installed,piston ring compressor and verify ring gaps are offset from each other. crosshatch on new bore sleeves and reassembled with torque wrench to specs including torque angles and in these working conditions I would say the odds of a durable and lasting rebuild are stacked against him for sure. but hey it's just time and money and tropical location and a hottie to be stranded with lol purty good plan to me too.

Good luck popping out those cylinder sleeves. Takes a lot of heat. Probably easier to take the block to a local machine shop and let them press them out and install the new ones. Yanmar 2GM is a good basic motor. LOTS of them out there. You will be glad you decided to rebuild it. Love videos like this!
