Experience the process as Hill Top Property Services tears down, rebuilds & upgrades a retaining wall around a backyard patio. See the equipment & tools they use, along with the work that goes into putting something of this level together. Using stone from Techo-Bloc, along with equipment from companies like CAT, ASV, RAM, Yanmar & many more, they completely revitalize this backyard area. The transformation is incredible and the build is very interesting to watch. Those stepped terraces integrated with the steps are so nicely designed - you can tell the whole project is done with a high level of craftsmanship and quality materials. I could see this same courtyard at a nice college campus or upscale development!

That's a great looking wall, I can't imagine trying to deal with the drainage in a scenario like that. It looks like a huge bowl trying to pour rain water into the house.

Thanks Jo, the owners were really happy with it. They installed a drainage system around the patio with drain tile feeding to a basin with a pump to get excess water away from the house. Plus there was already a drain in the center of the patio.

ALKUKES - I agree, it ended up working out perfect. I'm so glad that I got that shot of them seeing it for the first time. It really made a huge difference, totally transformed their backyard. Brother boy the Australians just use wooden or concrete slabs as retainer walls and it all cracks it looks so messy and could be done a lot better this stone marble gorgeous looking wall is what every high end house should get just like solar panels

that needs way more glue if you want it to last aswell as you need to make sure its level for the blocks that will go over it other wise itll start yo tilt over time

The guys followed the specs Techo-Bloc told them to use. They used a Geo-Grid material along with the stone to help hold everything together. Thanks for commenting!

They installed a pretty serious drain system along with the new retaining wall. Many layers of drain tile collect excess water and bring it to a basin, which pumps it away from the house. Hope this helps, thanks for commenting Marc!

Is the weight of the stone the only thing holding it all together?

Yes Jon, they used a Geogrid material that is designed to hold the wall in place using the weight of the stone on top of it. It's the black mesh you see rolled out in between the stone throughout the project. Hope this helps, thanks for commenting!

They installed a pretty serious drainage system along with the new wall. Drain tile helps collect excess rain water and drains it into a large basin. A pump in the basin moves it away from the house. Hope this helps, thanks for commenting Aris!

So many question. 1. How come for the base you don’t use 0-3/4? Looks to me only 3/4. 2.What’s the bar for before applying the rock? 3. The video seems to me more as a marketing placement than the actual work

So this is my understanding, I'm not a pro, hope it helps. 1 - Techo-Bloc recommends using 3/4 for this application. 2 - They followed Techo-Bloc's recommendations on foundation and construction. There was no bar required. I believe the Geogrid material was used in-place to help prevent movement. 3 - It was developed to be something that would be entertaining, but would also market the company and the equipment they use. I use a cat like that to push snow. Also have used that exact dump trailer. I also used to sell techno blocks. Those are a good pick. They are a workhorse. Don't know why they put 10000 feet of plastic on a pallet, but...

The guys use the CAT machines to push snow in the winter as well. Also to load the V-Box spreaders with salt. Techo-Bloc makes great stuff, they use a lot of it on projects locally. Thanks for commenting Aaron!

Is this in a warmer climate? Clearstone as a base below the retainer wall creates a pocket beneath the wall for water to sit. I would hate to see a slight overlook cause so much work to go to waste. Also i see no clip system for this style of block so this solely relys on glue? I would suggest PL Premium in the future if that is the case. It also doesnt look like there was much step back put into each layer to aid in the structure of the retainer wall. The Project turnt out looking very good, i would like to see how it holds up. Very solid large stones to use. Very natural looking.

Hi I do not understand much of the trade but were the blocks placed without any bonding adhesive like mortar mix, etc? I saw at point you did use some but it was for the upper levels.

Joeys Father - They did use a Loctite bonding adhesive between each layer of block. They also use a Geogrid material that's designed to use the weight of the stone around it to hold the blocks in place. It's that roll of black mesh that you see them put down a few times in the video. They used many layers of it throughout every level of the wall. Hope this helps, thanks for commenting!

Stone is definitely a much better material for retaining walls. Even treated wood will rot when in contact with earth. There is just no avoiding it.

12s - The tubing you're referring to is called drain tile. It's designed to help funnel rain water into a basin, which is then pumped away from the house. Hope this helps, thanks for commenting!
