Pop your popcorn, as this is a long and in depth video on how to overhaul a vintage square bore Rochester 4-Jet, also referred to as a 4GC carburetor. In this video, you will see the disassembly, cleaning, reassembly and correctly setting up all the float and linkage adjustments.
This is a 60+ year old four barrel carburetor used on many GM cars and trucks in the late 50's and into the 60's, that I overhauled. This carb is set up for 1959 to 1964 Chevrolet 283's and 327's. The Chevy 348 from 1959 to 1961 used the same spec's, so it will work on a 348 also.
I did not re-plate this carburetor, I gave it a quick light coat of gold rattle can spray paint to make it look good, as most of the plating was well worn away, so gasoline may remove the paint if spilled on it.
I overhauled this carburetor for resale, along with a 1960 (dated July 18th 1960) Chevrolet 283 four barrel Power Pac intake manifold I restored to sell as a package deal. I would like $950 "cash" for both the intake and carburetor, as-is with no warranty. I will not ship due to size and weight, as I am not building a wooden box to ship them in. I am close to a lot of major freeways, being the closest to 1-75 and the I-696 interchange just north of Detroit, Michigan. Go to my "about" page here on RU-vid for my email if you're interested in purchasing the set up.
I have an identical new in the box 4GC carburetor I will be overhauling soon. I might make a quick video.... 30 minutes or less on it, just giving the very basics of rebuilding it. After 64+ years of sitting on a shelf, the rubber on it is rock hard or totally disintegrated. I'm going to keep it as a spare for my 59 Bel Air's 348.
I also have a late 50's to mid 60's Rochester 2-Jet, 2GC I rebuilt and made a past video on that I will sell and ship, due to it being already boxed up for a buyer that never followed threw with purchasing it. Here is that video; • Rebuilding a GM Roches...

Good job rebuilding the carburetor. It's becoming a lost art. In 2000 when I quit wrenching and went into the management side of the business I was the only guy in the shop that knew how to rebuild a carburetor. Of course I had over 30 years experiance at that point.

You must have a lot of patiences to do that. I know my dad said he would tear a carburetor's and transmissions. Whatever he had to do get the job done.thank you for the video

The gold finish on the carburetor was done at the factory. It's called diechromate. GM did that to protect the carburetor.

Nice work Howard. I enjoy carb rebuilding myself. The half turn open on the idle circuit screws also suggests vacuum issues were trying to be masked.

Took me awhile to get through the whole video. Good job Howard. It brought back memories of rebuilds in the past. I had two different 283, one on a 63 Impalla and one on a 66 Chevelle. They were two barrel carbs.

Good stuff H! I haven’t rebuilt a carb in many years but have set many nights at an old kitchen table with everything laid out and I’d be in a ZONE of my own while doing it. Do you ever miss Savanah Georgia and the Marine work? Nothing like southern heat & humidity soaking into the eyes while working. Thx for the video. (Your still on my prayer list sir-Best to ya🙏🇺🇸)

I missed the seasons when living in the south..... I enjoy snow over Christmas, but this year I doubt we will get any. We have been in the 50's on a regular basis. It should be in the low 30's this time of year here.

@@OldCarAlley yes sir, same in KY. I hope JAN & FEB stays same. Those months around here can be VERY cold, wet & treacherous for the drivers! We get an icy sorta snow most times. Never that light & fluffy stuff. ❄️ ☃️

Great video. I am surprised this year carb is a lot different than the 750 cfm on my 1969 Buick.

Hi howard. New to your chanell. Love the work you do. What is the part number for the kit? Does this kit work for my carb which is the same as yours on my 1956 265 engine?
@OldCarAlley
@OldCarAlley 8 месяцев назад
The kit didn't have a part number. I "think" I showed the business card from where I purchased the kit from. Most all 4-Jet's use the same kit, as the kits come with enough different gaskets to make the kit work on all 4-Jets.

In your parts cleaner, is the cleaning solution heated? Looks like it does a very nice job.
@OldCarAlley
@OldCarAlley 8 месяцев назад
No it's not heated. It dose have a dozen or more cans of that power tune stuff in the fluid though, from the many years of carb overhauls. That stuff really cleans and makes the fluid work much better.

How can we get the rebuild kit and the measurement tools, i need to rebuild mine badly! Thanks

The tools are obsolete, so maybe try eBay. Carb kits can be ordered at any auto parts stores or on line.

Are these carbs good for performance? Fun little street engine?
@OldCarAlley
@OldCarAlley 3 месяца назад
My Bel Air's 348 has one. It runs great with it..... it's a manual, so I ease into it, if I got to get into to the power. They're best on automatic cars.
