Our latest winter shop project is putting a new floor in our 1980's New Holland 520 manure spreader. It's old but affordable equipment for a small family farm. #familyfarm, #cattlefarm, #farming, #newholland, #wolf,
No doubt. Appearance is less important than preservation for the spreader. Nice hardwood lumber for the floor. Never had wolves. Most of our predators were intimidated by a territorial English Shepherd. Rats too. Thank you Dave.
We had a great rat dog when I was a kid and he went crazy when we cleaned bins. Ash seems like a logical choice since the ash borer will eventually get here and kill these trees.
That spreader was definitely worth fixing! I dont think i have ever seen one that clean underneath! The 2 major spots on them Nh spreaders was the axle and where the yellow tounge meets the frame!
I was really surprised at how solid it was. I had to repair the right axle last summer because the axle frame rusted on that side. Poor design that holds slop.
I purchased a 520 many years ago . I still have it . After a couple of years the floor became a problem . New Holland paid for the material to replace it , not labor. I did it my self . That type of floor was a problem .
Yes,. They also sent me more cross members to weld between the original ones . I hauled lot of manure in the winter on frozen ground that's hard on a manure spreader .
It's looking great Dave...paint jobs between a 57 chevy and a manure spreader are two different things...lol. Those damn wolves are following where the deer are...they've wiped the deer out here.... leave it to the gooberment to manage the wildlife 🤬. Thanks Dave.
Thanks Brent. We still have plenty of deer but this is an unusual amount of wolves. I’d hate to be calving outside this year like some of my neighbors.
Your spreader looks nice with the new paint. What a career change after retirement. Probably much more enjoyable. Are you going to measure the snow depth with the new floor?
We had a 520. First worm drive draper chain we had. Hated it! Slow was too slow, would take forever to empty the little spreader. fast was too fast, would either break the draper chain, or push the beater too hard. But then, we have heavy, wet 💩.. Would love to have slop gates! We bought a basket case 520 for parts, should have put the slop gate in the big spreader.. The IH spreader had a slop gate, but there wasn't much left of it. Your draper chain looks a bit stretched.. Nice paint job 👍😎 brush and roller work!! Some used motor oil on the new boards with add years to their life.
I’ve found the same thing on high speed. It bends to slats in heavy manure and they hit the beaters and break. I leave it on slow and open the slop gate wider. That chain is stretched. I’m hoping it will last. A new one is a thousand $.
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn holding it back with the slop gate, puts more strain on the chain. I thought it looked a little stretched.. we wear the chain out before it stretches. Sure glad we changed ours when we did! Didn't go through New Holland, got it from another dealer that dealt with a chain company. Chains only for an 18' spreader were $300.. we bought 75' of chain. Slats are cheap to make. It's only angle iron. Just trim one side down.
@@GosselinFarmsEdGosselinI know exactly what you mean about the slop gate bending the chain. I have to be very careful with heavy, wet manure. Rocks are another recurring issue😅. My chain price was from Shoups.
