EDIT 5/6/22: This car has been sold and is now enjoying retirement in the state of Florida. Congrats to the new owner!
Video 2 in the progress of my 1979 Toyota Corolla. Last time i tried changing the mechanical fuel pump but that didn't fix it. This time, i take my shot at rebuilding the car.
Link to Mikes Carburetor Channel that i used to help me rebuild my carb.

Same problem with my 84 Corolla coupe. Sat for too long. It was working fine but had a power steering leak and I let it sit for too long since I had my pickup to use at the time. When I tried to start it one day had same issue. I replaced fuel pump. (The one it had worked but was from a 4 door) they are different. Checked fuel lines. Dropped and cleaned tank. Nothing. I figured the end of the line was the carb. But I know nothing about carbs. I heard something about a floater drying out in carb... But I see you brought it back to life. I'm gonna use that link for O'Reilly. Thank for the tip. And congrats. You just forgot to say "IT'S ALIVE!!!"""😂✌️ PS sweet ride. I had an 83 pickup before. Got stolen 😣. Love old Toyota though. I would like to own a 70s pickup or Stout or Corona. Great job! Subscribed. ✌️

When you install a carburetor on a car, its a smart idea to manually fill the fuel bowl with fuel before you start cranking the engine. That way, there's already fuel inside the carburetor, and when you first go to start it, it should start within a few seconds. That way, you don't need to crank the engine for a while to get the mechanical fuel pump pumping fuel all the way from the fuel tank, all the way to the carburetor.

The tiniest tiniest issue caused the biggest problem. Glad you got her going!!! You're just like me, I have a ton of old 70s and 80s Toyotas, trying to get them all rolling

1973 Corolla - used gasoline with no ethanol to solve the vapor lock issue. Place in El Monte, CA “Carburetor Exchange” can fix, diagnose issues with old carburetors. Temporarily used a transparent plastic hose from the fuel pump to the carburetor to see if fuel is reaching the carburetor. Replaced the contact points in the distributor with electronic ignition.

Hi, I have a 76 Celica (TA23) with the same engine and faults ( also a home mechanic). I changed the mech fuel pump but still no joy :( . It was harder for me to remove it because my hood flips on the front side, lol. Looks like i have to rebuild my carb too, need to ask if you have the reference/ part number/ carb model number for the carb rebuild kit? Need to source it for a similar rebuild. Thanks for the links and a great walk-through on the rebuild, looking forward to more vids on your Corolla.

If you are in the USA, i went to the Oreillyautoparts website and searched by my car model. I did a search for yours from Walker Products tune up kit #5619C www.oreillyauto.com/shop/b/fuel---emissions-16775/carburetors---parts-16801/carburetor-kit-12248/d5bc70949f67/1976/toyota/celica?q=carburetor+kit Hope this helps

i’m sorry what were your symptoms of a bad carb? i just bought a 1977 corolla with a 2TC and it idles very rough and gets horrible gas mileage and very slow speed. Would this lead to being the carb? if so i’d rather get a weber than rebuild the stock carb. i heard they’re over complicated garbage

Sorry i didn't respond sooner. The car had been sitting for several years. I had picked up a 1971 corolla a few months before this one and rebuilding the carb really helped. This one just wouldn't stay running. Rebuilding the stock carb and draining the tank made the biggest difference.

Sorry I don't. I only replaced what i could and replaced everything back to the original location. I got lucky that it was simple and I did not have to really diagnosis it. If you're not already, there are some groups on Facebook like 3TC garage or Toyota 3TC that i'm sure have members that could help you out.

The bowl where the float goes?
@oldrcrich
@oldrcrich 2 года назад
Correct, there is a little pin that the float makes contact with, the tip was broken and clogging the fuel intake into the bowl.
