Rebuilding My Mercruiser 5.7L Boat Engine

With new parts and the previous videos I have made, I was able to toss this engine together quickly. This is a new (to me) 638 block that a machine shop had in stock for me. It is a 4 bolt main rather than 2 bolt main so that is a nice little upgrade. That, and the cam thrust cover was slightly different. They were easy fixed though and I reused all my top end parts after a thorough cleaning.

You should have bought some used vortec heads for that engine. Would have gave you an extra 20 horsepower on the stock engine

It's true. I thought about it but my heads were still ok. But you're right and it was on my mind.

Keep up the good work. I know the feeling, I rebuilt my Mercruiser 3.0L. Only things I can suggest is referring to the service manual for torque specs and adjustments. Are you going to run the motor outside the boat? I would highly recommend and its pretty simple to do, that way you can fix any oil leaks or other issues.

@605BOLT 2 года назад
Thank you for the encouragement. I actually have the engine back into the boat and it's good to go. This footage is about two months old. I did just what you said about running it out of the boat. It was nice to have that peace of mind. Idk if you can tell but I was pretty crabby when I was making these videos. 🤣 Really sucks to be working on a boat during summer as opposed to sitting on it haha.

It is exactly the same Engine! 350 Magnum MerCruiser 5.7Lt Carburettor ... you can check the video in the 7:12 where 1 of the collars are not attached. this is the part i am talking about !

After how many work hours ( years of use) did you open the engine? Are there any cracks or rust -corrosion on the inside of the engine block because of the salt water cooling system?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 месяца назад
Yeah, I understand. Which part you need now but I don't know what the part number is so that you can order one. That's what I need to look up.

There is basically little corrosion in my engine because I only use it on freshwater. My boat never runs in saltwater. All the pieces that you see in my videos are I think original except for the manifolds.

@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
@@kubaSWAT I am actually working on a plastic gauge video for my next one haha. Cam bearings I have the machine shop do if they need any work. This block needed them so I had the machine shop install them and I also had the machine shop put the pistons on the rods. They require specific tools.

I hope that was a fresh water motor. No brass plugs any where.Maybe you used SS? What was the final cost? 4 k to the door at michigan Motorzs /long block/not sure if it`s wirth just getting it from them done.

can you go in more detail about the wiring. how do you know what wires go where? did you make notes before the rebuild?
@605BOLT

I'm sorry I can't due to this being like two years ago now. But I just carefully removed and labeled so that I could replace it all in the same spot. I have a few videos about timing this engine and installing it multiple times. You might be able to see what you need in those videos but my memory is too rusty.

Hi! I really thank you for this Playlist! I'm in the middle restoring a motor like this and i want to ask. Where did you bought the piston rod assembly? Do you still have that information?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 4 месяца назад
I reused the pistons and rods but you can easily get some stock aftermarket ones from places like jegs, summit racing, or speedway motors.

Did your old block have roller lifters and roller cam OR did it have Hydraulic/tappet lifters?

It was roller and hydraulic. New engine too. I idle a lot so I didn't want to worry about wiping about a cam with a flat tappet lifter setup.

You had to replace the block?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
Ya. the main bearings had gotten enough heat in them that I chose to just get a new block rather than fixing what was there. It could have certainly been bored .030" over and had a line hone job done but I was able to find one that was ready to go already so it didn't really make sense to fix the one I had. I actually have it sitting on the scrap pile yet haha.

@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
Ya it won't be in salt water at all so it should be good to go. The engine was already prepped to go into an automotive application so I just snagged it off their shelves. No biggie. I guess if they rust out, the engine will be coming out for a third time. hahaha
