Your scraping is fantastic Phil. Lovely even pattern. I considered using an RF-7045 until my Maho came up. Those castings look pretty nice.

Thank you, I have spent an extreme amount of time thinking on this machine. It is getting closer. I can't do the final inspections and fits just yet. Lots of other mating surfaces to go.

@@AlmostMachining It is going to be the nicest RF45.

That is just to hot for anything. Of course that was everyday on some ships enginerooms, it can be brutal.@@AlmostMachining

Good day Phil . very interesting. explanation is excellent you're quite the teacher. I can only imagine the precision that you're striving for. maybe one day I'll be at a point to where such things matter

Last night was our chance to see a Blue Moon until 2037. I think the Man Above mite need your help to scrap in a new path for the moon to travel in so it will come back around sooner (@@)! I wish I had your talents, that's and awesome finish, Bear. Ps enjoyed hearing from you yesterday, Keep on Keeping on, and watch that heat! Bear

Looks like you have your work cut out for you. Is it possible that as long as you have maximum co-planer contact side to side & front to rear regardless of level or parallel with the bottom, any deviation from absolute level can be compensated for by tramming of the head? I'm thinking that maximum co-planar is a primary concern to achieve maximum ridgity. ... or maybe my head is up my rear.

Thank you, i think the limit is going to be the machine. The castings builder work put in. Etc.

Ill be following this very closely. My RF-45 has the same symptoms and it will be interesting to see how you resolve these issues. Is there any other way to measure the difference in height of the two ways of the base or the only way to do that is to use the saddle?
@AlmostMachining
@AlmostMachining Год назад
If you had access to a large measuring machine they could be done at the same time. A good portion of my issue is the base.
@brandontscheschlog
@brandontscheschlog Год назад
I just got done scraping the bottom of my saddle and now am doing the top. I will try to use this to scrape the base by. I believe Richard King suggested using a level to get them close. I will look in the Connelly machine reconditioning book and see if there’s another method that works well or better. I don’t have a large CMM at my disposable.

One other question, will you be doing a series on correcting this and did you look into the other components, such as the column?
@AlmostMachining
@AlmostMachining Год назад
@@brandontscheschlog im skipping some of the support welding. It has been super hot here. Next video will show the column flex and then go into the epoxy and support work under the base. That has to happen before i finish scraping.

@@brandontscheschlog i do not have RK type tools to be using. I will show the results and some of the scraping as well. I turned the section of the base that rides under the saddle into a flat that i used to gage to surfaces of the saddle to base to. I have a little bit more to work on the gibs yet on the base. I have also turcited the saddle bottom and once the epoxy is done ill scrape it all in. The issue comes from the base not being Ridgid for what i would like.

not sure why having the sliding surface on the base the same height is relevant? all you need are both surfaces to run parallel and in the same plane. a difference in height doesn't matter as your only moving in the y direction.
@AlmostMachining

It matters for how I am able to measure the surfaces. If i make the saddle top and bottom parallel then the fit remains consistent. Great question, it is mostly due to my limitations on performing the measurements
