The long awaited reassembly process begins! Watch as we put the gearbox bits back where they belong in this Triumph Spitfire transmission. Incidentally, the procedure is very similar to other Triumph gearboxes such as a TR gearbox (though the components and torque specs will vary). As always, please don't hesitate to post questions... and subscribe to the channel to see more videos as they come out!

I reassembled my gearbox today and I have found a slightly different method of installing the mainshaft bearing without having to switch between pressing the casing and shaft multiple times: I assembled the mainshaft including the front synchro hub and used some string to tie the whole assembly together so it wouldn't fall apart. I engaged 3rd gear on the assembly as this would bring the front hub outer ring rearwards enough to clear the large gear on the dropped down layshaft and allow the still loose mainshaft to be brought further forward in the casing. This allows the bearing outer race to be easily pressed into the casing all the way to its retaining ring in one go due to the mainshaft being so far forward that it does not engage with the inner race (I found it easier to tap the outer race in using a hammer and brass drift). Then it's just a simple matter of using the hydraulic press to press home the mainshaft rearwards into the bearing inner race, again all in one go! Be sure to remove the string just before the 1st gear thrust washer contacts the inner race otherwise it'll get trapped! Hopefully that made sense, I found it a much simpler method of getting the same result with the rear bearing :)

Definitely a good tip! I've done quite a few more since the video, and using string to hold things together works well

@midwestmotoring
@midwestmotoring 3 года назад
@@hugoschyns6937 the trick for the speedometer gear is usually a wrench slightly larger than the mainshaft. You can put the open end around the speedo gear and then tap on the wrench with a hammer. (don't forget to remove the circlip!) Sounds like you got it though. Good luck with the build!

Excellent video. I learned a lot! Although I would do one thing different. When you pressed the input shaft bearing into the front of the case 24:10 you applied force on the end of the shaft loading the race. I was always told you should only press a bearing into it's housing by the outer race. So a piece of pipe matching the diameter of the outer race would have been my choice.

@midwestmotoring
@midwestmotoring 3 года назад
Not really necessary. The gearbox doesn't depend on a pressurized oil system like the engine, and it's also not moving very quickly when you're backing out of the garage, so the gear oil has plenty of time to lubricate everything on startup. Good question though!

Hi Ray--sorry I didn't see your message until now. It depends on what type of gearbox you have, as well as whether it's overdrive or not. Typically it's some amount of labor plus parts, so I also won't have a complete idea until it's already partially disassembled--but I can usually estimate pretty close. Shoot me a message at matt@mwmotoring.com and let's chat further. Thanks!

Great video! Rebuilt my MG Midget 1500 with it. Thanks a bunch! Quick question though, what type of oil do you use to refill it? My manual says H.D. 90, which I cannot seem to find any direct equivalent. The forums say all sort of stuff but since you are a master in the subject, I guess you know the answer. (Sorry for my english, it is not my first language).
@midwestmotoring
@midwestmotoring Год назад
No problem. HD 90 is just gear oil. The tricky part isn't finding 90 weight oil, but finding GL4 rated gear oil instead of GL5, which will cause damage to gearbox synchro rings. I recommend Redline MT90. You can get it from Redline directly or even from Amazon. I use this in all of my classic gearboxes.

If I were rebuilding it, I could find out, but it's difficult without looking. Start by checking the top cover. Your shift linkage may be sloppy. The shift fork could also be worn especially if the gearbox has been running the wrong fluid. Make sure the clutch hydraulics are working properly and to their fullest, though if that was an issue you might be having trouble with more than 1 gear. Everything else is gearbox out, I'm afraid. The clutch might not be getting its full travel (a worn pin will cause this), the synchro ring may not be gripping properly, or you could have slop in the gear train with too much end float. You'll need to pull the gearbox to measure everything and see what needs to be replaced. If you're near Chicago I can help, and I can repair the gearbox as well if that's the problem.

It's going to be either the clutch or the synchro ring. If clutch, could be hydraulic. If it's the synchro, I'm afraid that's gearbox out.

I followed your video for the rebuild of my 73 trans. However, when I attempt to press in my input shaft I get binding between the synchro and the selector. All of my clips are able to go in place so I'm sort of stumped as to why I'm having this issue. Do you have any ideas what I might be getting wrong?
@midwestmotoring
@midwestmotoring 3 года назад
The synchro ring has 3 extrusions that fit into slots cut out of the hub. Most likely the slots aren't lining up, and if you twist the synchro ring it'll fit right in. If you've tried to assemble things, the synchro ring might also be pressed tightly against the input shaft--so it'll be stuck on. That's normal, and you might have to gently pry it off with a small screwdriver or a plastic stick of some kind. It should then rotate freely. I hope that helps!

You can still find everything you need, even if you have to make it. I wonder if there's documentation that lists the specifications for the shims, for example. Type of steel and so forth. Hello, when mounting the 1 + 2 and 3 + 4 shafts, there is a small roller bearing between them and there should be a washer on each side. Your video does not show that you have placed it there. @@pavelvavrina254 you have a later "single rail" gearbox. It should be very similar inside but will have a different shifting system. I think what you mean is the layshaft. You should be pressing in your bearing on the outer race. By pressing on the shaft, you are pressing the balls between the inner and outer races. Ball bearings aren’t designed to take an axial load (taper roller bearings are). Other than that I thought it was quite a good video but since people will assume you are an expert, you should demonstrate it properly. I suspect you will get away with it, since the bearing is large and the balls and races are hardened steel.
@midwestmotoring
@midwestmotoring 3 года назад
Hi Steve, yes that definitely makes sense now that you mention it. I assume you're referring to one of the final steps where I press the input shaft into the gearbox. Going forward, do you think a section of PVC pipe on the outer race would take the force? So long as the surfaces aren't damaged, I would imagine it doesn't take excessive force to press in the bearing. I can use that and put a bar across the top, pressing on the PVC pipe to spread the force out evenly on the outer race as you suggested. Otherwise, the input shaft would be in the way and I'd be pressing in the bearing unevenly--at least without finding some fairly heavy duty accessories for the shop press. Alternatively, I could use a brass drift and tap in the bearing, but that introduces a lot of variables that could cause damage.
@edwardkendall3905
@edwardkendall3905 3 года назад
Agree with Steve, I use steel pipe ( called black pipe here) usually available in a close enough diameter. The one time I tried abs it barely made it and was visibly deformed after a single operation. But your video is great, with nice detail on how to deal with not having three hands!
