Follow along as I rebuild our rotten old deck. A much needed and overdue project I just had to do this spring/summer. I tried to improve the design with some "sectioning" and a good trim around the edge. I hope this can inspire you to build something of your own!

Let’s see now; you are, by your expressed (RU-vid) profession, a blacksmith. And a carpenter (a careful, exacting, experienced one). A horticulturalist. A gardener. Also from previous videos; a machinist, a flax maker, an obviously loving father and I am sure the list would continue long past my finger’s ability to find keys here on my iPad. Obviously, Torbjörn you perfectly fit the definition of a RENAISSANCE MAN. Also, your videos always make me smile 😎. THANK YOU!

Memories. One of my earliest as a toddler was watching my late Father build a new wooden deck atop the small fugly poured concrete one their house came with. I was goggle eyed at how he used his mind and hands, and all sorts of cool tools, to transform building materials to create something central to our daily lives. It had a permanent effect on my young psyche that persists to this day.

Great job, the finished deck looks fantastic 👍. Here in Aus we have to contend with white ants, called termites in other countries. If we were to build a deck like that with the supports down on the ground like you have yours, the white ants would eat it to bits in a matter of months, all that would remain would be the nails and metal screws. All our supports, stumps we call them, are fitted with a “stump cap” to stop the white ants getting up into the building. With your cold climate you probably don’t have “termite “ problems. Looks great! Regards from Down Under, the land totally infested with white ants 😂.

This is such a strange and interesting way to build a deck. My job is mostly building decks in Indiana. So many subtle differences in techniques and materials, some not so subtle. The process of rot seems to be very different; when the deck boards are in that condition here, the framing underneath is normally also ready for a full replacement. I really wish I could have seen the full process of building the foundation for it. Better for your budget that it was not included. Cats appear to be the same in both locations.
@torbjornahman
@torbjornahman 15 дней назад
The rot was a surprise to me as well... it should not behave like that. It's just 15 years old. I think the problem was the boards we originally used. They were not treated, but instead heat processed (kiln), like 30% charred kind of, which should give the wood a pretty good rot resistance without the chemicals. Somehow I think the rot started in the boards and traveled down into the supporting joists, although the boards didn't show anything significant until the very end. The main joists or beams underneath was totally unaffected.

I had good results with joist tape, that goes on top of the joists so no water can penetrate the wood from above. Not too expensive and does the job👍
@torbjornahman
@torbjornahman 15 дней назад
It depends on who you talk to... some say tape or any plastic between will actually trap moisture instead of working it's way out of the wood and evaporate.
@lordnycon2186
@lordnycon2186 15 дней назад
@@torbjornahman For my deck i got tape that feels a bit porous, it's not smooth and consistent, don't know how to describe it🤔 I used untreated lumber and put just a coat of wood protection on it. After a real wet winter here in Germany, i can't see any discoloration or water marks on it, i'm pretty happy👍 But, my deck is 3m in the air, on trees i had to cut after a storm, so it dries probably really fast😊
