Breeders' Cup Classic winner Arrogate cruised to victory in the 2017 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park over a field that included 2016 Horse of the Year California Chrome. Bet on horse racing legally at www.tvg.com!
I have been dying for this day for forever. This horse is a freight train, no one comes close to comparison. Can't wait to see what this year holds for him and Baffert.
God Bless Arrogate, but something they didn’t tell you was he was absolutely legless after his race in Dubai. A certain British trainer was watching him post-race and thought immediately “that horse will never be the same again”. So the truth is, he should have been retired, and they threw too many tough races at him in such a short period. I don’t really buy into the whole track at Del Mar thing. I think he was just a spent force, a shadow of his old self, but still running some decent races because he was just so incredible - officially rated between 2 and 4lb behind Frankel as a 3 year old with all the major handicappers :)
What an awesome trip by Arrogate. Congratulations! California Chrome is healthy and sound, which is the most important thing of all. Ready for a well-deserved retirement at age six after an amazing career. Thanks and congratulations to CC and all his connections.
I really like this horses natural running style. When Smith changes leads on him he picks it up as if he knows what he is being asked to do. Eerilly he seems to rest and relax on his own then hits those gears when asked. Few horses respond in this manner at such a young age. If he stays sound we could be seeing one of the great ones. Of course the real Pegasus, Secretariat, just happens to be of a world all his own. Whatever I am anxsiously awaiting his next trip.
There's no horse to compete with Arrogate right now......just became the 2nd all time money leading earner in North America....he will surpass CC's earnings and should surpass the all time in the World of thoroughbred racing.....scary good horse...
the race was for 12 MILLION dollars..of COURSE hes gonna pass a lot of horses in earnings..stop acting like his earnings are some BIG DEAL..ONE race he earned 7 million bucks
Granted it doesn't take many wins to make top money earner these days, but can't dismiss the impressiveness of Arrogate in his races despite some obstacles - that combination of precociousness, speed, stamina, versatility, professionalism, and heart in any thoroughbred is exceedingly rare today. His times don't lie.
Oh yeah I forgot how many horses have made over 10 million dollars in the US.... only 3..so you must know how easy it is even if it's a 12 million dollar race u GOON...
@Victor Rosario: With the $5mil/win races newer to the scene and inflation, breaking that $10mil earning threshold is becoming more commonplace. Of the three you mention, two of those did so in the last few months (one with a mere 3 graded stakes to his name, however impressive) and the other was within the last decade with the common thread being that every one of them won a race with a $5million+ purse. Before them and the existence of the lucrative Dubai and Pegasus World Cups, it was a ways back to the last horse that held North America's top earning title and he had to run more races to do so.
Once Chrome decided he wanted no part of Arrogate in this race it was really like handing Juddmonte Farms the winner's share of the $12 million dollar purse, because the rest of the horses in this field had not a snowball's chance in hell of beating Arrogate.
whatabout count fleet nobody has mentioned him as one of the all time greats he was a machine too won 20 of 21 starts including the triple crown he was so good he won a race a week before winning the belmont
when i saw arrogate starting out in earlier races i knew he was a super horse friends were saying chrome is the horse i said u are crazy arrogate is in a league if his own and i won money on him only way he can lose now if injured while racing best horse hands down
Es sencillamente demoledor. Extraordinario. Un potro tardío que no estuvo listo para la triple corona pero la llegó su hora. Ojalá lo lleven a la Dubai World Cup.
Chrome never had a chance to run the race of his life on this day because of that unfortunate knee chip and I was rooting on him but towards the stretch turn I just felt that something was off when he wasn't going like he normally would.. This has just about the same feel for me that the Belmont had when he got injured there and didn't see it until the stretch turn.. :/ Unfortunate occurrences. On to retirement big boy and I hope to see your offspring follow in your footsteps.
SweetiePieHeather Chrome was clearly hurt in this race. I think Victor knew that and it's the reason why he pulled up and slowed him down at the end of the race.
Not 100% certain but it could be a knee chip, i just believe that it could be the issue which is why i said it like I did in my previous post. This was posted on the official CC facebook: "We want to thank everyone for their love and support! We will know more tomorrow but so far it looks like fluid in his knee. The vet will be there in the morning to check on him and see how he feels and will X-ray his knee. Everyone connected with Chrome is very proud of our champ he could never disappoint. The Shermans will miss him very much at the barn but the Shermans as well as everyone connected are looking forward to his new career."
Hi, my name is Heather. I have an unhealthy emotional connection to California Chrome and make excuses for him whether they contain a scintilla of logic or not. Because I live vicariously through a HORSE I can't bring myself to say or think anything other than California Chrome had "legitimate" excuses for all of his races. He is manifestly the best horse to ever step foot on a racetrack and I guess it's back to pleasuring myself to old races and photos of him. You ma'am. are the epitome and personification of a sore loser. He had a bad gate, but so what. Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby from gate twenty. No big deal. Arrogate is the superior animal as well the the not-yet-fully developed animal in terms of physical structure, experiential knowledge-acquisition, mental/emotion/psychological development, likely focus/concentration inferiority to California Chromes and still won easily. And this comes on the heels of a long layoff with, a layoff during which CC had an easy prep win, after beating California Chrome during their first match-up. Look Heather, Arrogate ran a 1:47.61 while under a hand ride all the way to the wire, never extended or shown the whip once. That was nigh a 1:47.61 jog. CC may have managed second place if he, indeed, did suffer a bone chip, but there was absolutely no way he was running faster than Arrogate. NO CHANCE IN HELL. Admit Arrogate is the superior animal. Losing to a freakish colt doesn't diminish the accomplishments in California Chromes racing career. Be a good sport for Christ's sake. Simply because he's not the best horse to ever race doesn't mean he's not great. Why can't a significant portion of Chromies be realistic? This is the kind of crap that gives them (and their horse) a bad name.
I saw a photo of Chrome after the race somewhere and his front right knee is very swollen. Hoping he comes out of it ok. Kudos to Arrogate but we'll never know what may have happened if CC didn't get hurt.
I think California Chrome’s jockey (Victor) felt he didn’t have a chance with Arrogate and just let up . There was nothing wrong with that horse. Got smoked. Same as in their other confrontations with each other
Arrogate is a monster and I am thrilled that Juddmonte is committed to running him through this year. Congrats to Shaman Ghost, Neolithic, Keen Ice and War Story. Hopefully Prayer for Relief can get some class relief or a new career. Good luck to Eragon, he will need it. And to Chrome, you had a good run but older horses rarely end on top, passing their torch before retiring to the breeding shed, be careful of your knee while producing next years foals.
+Michael Northern Dancer was minuscule. And though it's debatable whether he was an all-timer or not, Smarty Jones would've never been bet on if it were a size and physique competition.
+Michael Yep, Northern Dancer, whom practically nobody wanted at first had a terrific racing career then went on to become the greatest, most influential sire in the history of the industry. Size?? Ha!!
If you watched tvg this week, you had it down cold if you had 3,7,9,10. You knew Neolithic would do well, same with Shaman Ghost, knew Chrome would have trouble, knew Keen Ice was good, but not good enough, and you knew 2,5,6,8,11 were dead at the gate. There were two good horse with the 10 and 12, but in trouble by the starting gate, too much to overcome.
CC didn't do jack shit this race! Victor asked and he never responded he lost ground! I'm finally gonna admit that Arrogate is just a monster. Sooner or later though nobody is gonna want to run with him just to run second.
Mallory S chrome didn't do anything because connections are suspecting a chipped knee! I sure as hell wouldn't want to run with a chipped knee, either!
Nancy Sobolik Yea I found that out after I wrote that comment and Art seemed really distracted in the interview post race so I think he is actually really worried about Chrome. I'm just glad it's nothing like what Charismatic had, a broken front leg.
Chrome never should have run in this race. He was past his prime. His record speaks volumes as being one of the all time greats in horse racing. Arrogate was great too. I just wish these announcers would stop making these Secretariat comparisons. Until his records are broken no one is in his class.
Arrogate horse number one in the world what the hell do look at the distance between him and the second place! It is in a world of illusion in another world....
@@mikewarren1401 he broke the track record in the travers at his first ever stakes race, he dealt with California chrome who in himself is a top top horse, we went on to win the Dubai world cup with ease coming right from the back, then he won the pegasus with complete ease, and amassed the most prize money a horse has ever earned... as the commentator said hes the man owar of the 21st century
The horse was pretty good but come on the greatest dirt horse. He has 1 track record. Secretariat has militia leaders track/race records plus a world record 2:24 that will never be touched!!! Spectacular bid has the world record for a mile and a quarter at 157 and some change. Sounds like he is your personal favorite which there’s nothing wrong with that but greatest dirt horse ever he is not. I would say he isn’t even in the top 10. Just look up the world records for the diffferent distances. Arrogates name you will not find. If you want to talk just this century well Ghost Zapper would have best him. You can’t be the greatest dirt horse and lose your last 3 races. Even if he had won those he still probably wouldn’t be in the top 10
I didn’t think you would have a come back. Check out horse racing nation. They list him 231 out of 250. He is a top 5 horse of this century. Not a all timer.
I've believed it & said it since I saw The Travers as a still somewhat green horse, that he was something special, something great & unique, the likes we haven't seen (except 4 American Pharoah) since the greatest ever of all time Man o' War, & Count Fleet and Secretariat, & the 1 he reminds me of (partly look & running wise) the most, the Grey Ghost who ran like the wind ~ Native Dancer.... I always really liked California Chrome, but there is talent, heart, stamina, strength, power & speed in Arrogate the Great that sets him apart & makes him exceptional, extraordinary, incredible, spectacular & superb!!! He is a Super Horse & a super star!!! He just proved himself (not that he needed 2 for me).... He is PHENOMENAL & can run like the Pegasus can fly!!! He is AMAZING!!! He is Arrogate the Great!!! He is something else, something truly, Truly REMARKABLE!!!
I'd luv 2 c him do what no horse (not even the incomparable Cigar ) could do except Tiz Now & that is win 2 Breeder's Cup Classics in a row.... Arrogate the Great!!!!
Easy Goer ran 3 beyer speed figures in a row of 124/126/126..Easy Goer was just a MUCH better horse than Arrogate/Chrome/Pharaoh..period..Easy Goer would have jogged past arrogate easily if he was around for this pegasus..Easy Goer wouldve prob won by 5 lengths..just cruising home
Chrome didn't fire. I wish he did tho...I think he is a great horse...top 100 of all time but I think Arrogate could be the best American horse we have seen since Spectacular Bid. American Pharoah was a good horse but who was the best horse he beat? Honor Code? I read that American Pharoah never ran a sub 23 quarter...doesn't mean much other than he grinds horses. Arrogate has an engine and is a faster horse then AP. If he doesn't get injured he will run a 140+ Timeform this year. I know it would never happen but I'd like to see how Arrogate would race on turf and if he does well then take on the Europeans at 1.5 miles in the Arc. Almanzor is a monster and I'm really looking forward to watching him race this year.
Yes, what a horse. I loved him. I'm sad that he wasnt allowed to complete his legacy! Evil prevailed here, but everything has its price and that one will be paid--eventually!
......................................................................"greatest horse in the world !" ............................that's what the man said !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Somethings not right. Chrome goes out with the worst performance in 26 races? But appeared to be likely the fittest he's ever been.. Just hope he's ok! He reached that 3/8 pole and look like he was hurting.. :(
Chrome didn't want to go into the gate. I have never seen him do that. I'm not saying Arrogate wouldn't have won still, but something wasn't right. What a great career Chrome has had. It's hard to believe he was conceived for just over $10,000 by two of the biggest jackasses on the planet. Well done Arrogate, he is the real deal and he is now the horse to beat.
***** While I tend to agree about his chances at stud, so much of breeding is down to the mare and some very nice mares have been lined up for him. Besides that Malibu Moon didn't have a stellar pedigree and was injured and retired before he did more than flash brilliance on the track but created an empire for himself, as did Kitten's Joy who was overlooked as a stud prospect due to his turf career yet has become the top turf sire in the States since his owner decided to stand him at stud himself. Cigar was sterile so we can't judge how he would do at stud since he was never able to reproduce.
Mark Craciun An associate was standing near the gate, he said Chrome was reacting to the roar of the crowd when he balked at the gate, he suspects someone forgot or didn't properly adjust Chrome's ear plugs. Besides that he ran a faster first quarter than he ever has, going in 22 and change, the closest he's come prior is the PA Derby when he ran 23.09 then spit the bit and stopped running. He ran fine until somewhere between mid backstretch and the far turn.
The time should be 1:46:68 -new stakes and Track Record, Gulfstream tracking screwed this up royally....put up Quality Road Donn Handicap and Lea's Donn Handicap and Arrogate beats both of them ...Lea by 1 and Quality Road by 5 lengths as per #Timeform clocking in Europe👍
Tator Kator Chrome posted his best numbers EVER in the Classic, and was still beat by Arrogate. His six year old year is his best year, he is bigger, more experienced, more muscled. That is why in weight for age races older horses carry more than younger ones.
rosario somehow got very very lucky to be on some GREAT horses of our time..i really have no idea HOW he gets to ride these GREAT horses..he is not a very good jockey..Mike Smith is a GREAT jockey..uses tactics etc..rosario NEVER uses his brain..he just "rides"
Arrogate ran great..but chrome was injured..if chrome was healthy he would have passed right on by arrogate and won the pegasus..Chrome was the BETTER horse
+Troll You certainly live up to your moniker. If you're being serious, you actually think California Chrome would have beaten a horse who ran at least a 1:47.61 while in hand from start to finish and geared down at the end?? CC would have needed a track record to do so. You truly believe California Chrome is capable of setting track records anytime he needs one in order to win? You're either a true troll or disturbingly delusional.
Chrome had post 12..yes 12..and was injured..Arrogate beat Chrome by half of length when they matched up healthy..and with a POOR ride from rosario..how can you say arrogate would win 10/10?..you are basing this on ONE race where he won by half of length..makes no SENSE..youre just a FAN talking..this race does not COUNT at all..Chrome was hurt
Chrome was HURT in this race and post 12..you CANT count this race at ALL..one horse was HEALTHY the other was NOT..arrogate beat Chrome by a half length when they met healthy..yes a half a length...you have no idea how chrome would have ran HEALTHY in this race...he never ran at this track..stop acting like arrogate is some superior horse to chrome..they ran ONCE and were a half length apart and a POOR ride by rosario in that race too
Carlos Alvarez They announced this would be his last race when they bought in, Taylor Made Farm has been advertising him for stud beginning in February.
Huh?? You want to see a thoroughly stakes race-undefeated four year old against early-season three year olds who have never even run 9 furlongs. The odds say neither of said three year olds will even be remembered after the first half or so of this year. This is an inordinately strange comment.
+Michael Well I am definitely excited to see the top three year olds face the best four year olds and up later in the year, but certainly not now. The original comment was just so ambiguous that I don't know if the OP meant he wants to see them race now or months down the line. I will say that I very much like this 2014-born class of Thoroughbreds. Thus far, the field looks extremely talented as well as deep, which is the antithesis of last year's horribly weak group. I am extremely bitter that this group lost Not This Time who I felt was so ridiculously gifted that his upside was practically infinite. His loss still upsets me. But there are so very many more potentially top talents and it seems like another one or two emerge(s) every weekend. From Classic Empire to Mastery to Uncontested to McCraken to Mo Town to El Areeb to Gormley to the potentially up-and-coming American Anthem there are so many names to look forward to. And, of course, there are plenty of others whose names I didn't even get to. But damn, I sure do miss Not This Time...
+Michael Yeah, the older division is a result of last year's three year olds being so, so, so weak. Remember how horrible it was leading up to the Kentucky Derby?? No one knew who to pick. Until Arrogate arrived it was all about Nyquist and Exaggerator...just awful. Freaking Creator won the Belmont Stakes. Wretched Laoban won the Jim Dandy...a MAIDEN!! The 2013-born boys was one of the worst crops I've ever seen. This year's group, the 2014s, look completely different. Thus far, even without Not This Time, talent is oozing all across the nation. This is looking, already, like a fun group of three year olds and an exciting road to the Triple Crown series and beyond. Who are your favorite three year olds at the moment??
+cgarnet01 in my opinion the 3yolds to watch are classic empire winner of the b.c. juvenile hes won 4 out of 5 lifetime starts the only time he lost he clipped heels and lost rider and mastery a promising 3yold also trained by bob baffert just win 2 in a row also its no joke runner up to classic empire in the b.c.juvenile
+Nick Absolutely!! I fully concur with you on those two colts. Classic Empire and Not This Time demolished a pretty stacked field in the Juvenile. I actually thought Not This Time was the most talented two year old despite coming up a bit short. When I learned that Not This Time was retired I was upset. It was a big blow. I've watched Mastery's last two races and he is looking nice. In one he cruised away from everyone but he had to bear down and work for the win in the other and he did just that. Uncontested was dominant in the Smarty Jones but it was in the slop so maybe he just takes to it and no one else in the field did. I need to see more. A number of people are raving about El Areeb after his win in the Jerome Stakes. A colt who is extremely green but impressed me immensely in the Sham Stakes is American Anthem. He very nearly edged out the considerably more experienced Gormley, who has three wins in four starts himself. If you haven't seen the Sham Stakes, you should. American Anthem is a really good looking colt. One can't look much more impressive finishing second than he did in that race. People also talk about McCraken but I don't know...I'm not a fan of his running style. He hangs way back, almost in last place for most of the race before surging forward. In a crowded field like the Kentucky Derby's he'll get swallowed up and have no chance.
+Michael Rodriguez Arrogate's paternal gramps, Unbridled, is becoming one of the most influential, important stallions of the last several decades, and possibly ever. Aside from Unbridled's Song and all the horses he sired Unbridled is responsible for the potential stallion dynasty that is growing with Empire Maker, Pioneerof the Nile, Bodemeister, now Pharoah and surely more to come. Exciting times on Kentucky's horse farms. I think the breeding industry is finally beginning to go in the right direction. What about you, Michael, what do you think about it??
If California Chrome is hurt I wouldn't force him to run. CC is still a great horse and look who won HOTY again. He might of won if CC wasn't hurt so your comments are crap
Susanne maier He was not hurt prior to the race, somewhere around the backstretch leading into the far turn he chipped his knee. His retirement will go on as planned.
+Nancy Sobolik yes you new at the 3/8th pole chrome was not responding and victor new it hats off to victor for taking care of chrome thats what good experience jockeys do good luck chrome thanks for the years of classic great performances
Nick Perez Credit where credit is due, Victor whaled on Chrome until the top of the stretch, when he still hadn't gotten a response he finally put up the whip and stood in the irons but either didn't suspect an issue or couldn't feel it since he let Chrome gallop out. I suspect he just thought Chrome was having a bad day and since it was his last race might as well give up when he couldn't force a response. (EDIT: An interview with Victor on Bloodhorse confirms my theory, he had no clue anything was wrong and just thought Chrome was having a bad day.)
+Pili Villarreal just my opinion sounds like your mocking and i dont care it dont take a rocket scientist to see that arrogate was at his prime i knew it the whole world knew it it was just my opinion
California Chrome is in the nascent days of his age six year. In no way, shape, form or fashion is that "old" or "getting old". At age six a Thoroughbred is at the acme of his career and life. A six year old is in peak condition at peak fitness level. "Getting old"?? Yeah right. CC is more developed in a variety of ways than Arrogate. Arrogate is simply the better of the two.
Chrome and American Pharos are extremely good horses. But the don't hold a chance to the likes of Arrogate, Secretariat, affirmed and Seattle Slew. Period been going to the races since 1968. And. No horse until Arrogate can compare to the Great Great Secretariat and Affirmed. Period
California chrome is overrated... Ce cheval doit prendre sa retraite -_-" Good job Mike smith ^^ Arrogate is the best horse of all time. From france :)
IF he was injured, its because Arrogate tested him to the max and Chrome couldn't handle it... That's how it works... Chrome has done the same thing to other horses... just this time, it happened to him.
One thing to remember is world records mean absolutely nothing. American horses will always hold the world record because timing is not started at the opening of the gate. In all other countries where top horses are raced, the timing starts at gate opening and the horse has to accelerate. IN addition, jockeys racing in America (because of the nature of the racing style) have the best judge of pace form all jockeys and this leads to fast times.
I've never seen him run and I'm not aware of the horses he beat. However, historians say he was one of the greats. PS Do you know that caps on means you are shouting a response?
Only the best EVER win the Triple Crown!!! American Pharoah is & will always be deserving of every accolade & thou I absolutely Love Arrogate & have seen something truly special in him from the start, he is not the best ever, not just yet....
Running faster times is not always a true indicator of the Better Horse. It is who is better on The Day when they both meet. Justin Gatlin of the US set all the world leading times before the 2016 Olympics. When he lined up against Usain Bolt "he defecated'.
That was Chromes curtain call just tired his time had come but this is a throw out race I'm telling u Chrome at his best beats Arrogate at 11/8 but Arrogate does become the better horse any further but they burned Arrogate out also but the gold Cup race in Dubai where he broke last made him a legend top 5 horse all time Chrome top 15 prob
Lets see here. 6f..Ghostzapper...7f Ghostzapper.....1m...Ghostzapper.....11/8...Ghostzapper....11/4... Ghostzapper in the breeders Cup Classic (1:59) against the best all star field ever assembled drawing away.. Now that is sprinters speed, versatility AND endurance. Only loss coming off an infection and quarter crack. Beyers off the charts. No...this is THE horse of a lifetime and no one even mentioned him.
+Michael There were at least a couple dozen Thoroughbreds, likely more, who were superior to Zenyatta. She faced males twice and won once. And neither race was exactly filled with all-timers. Greatest female? Definitely in the conversation, though surely behind Ruffian. But greatest Thoroughbred? Not even close.
+Michael Yeah, there's never been another like Ruffian. Pretty much every single time she crossed the finish line in a race she set some kind of record. Even her very first race as a two year old baby saw her tie the track record. Let me repeat, tied track record in first career race at age two. What a portent that was. It's so sad that she broke down in her match race. The things she could have gone on to accomplish could (and likely would) have been exceptional beyond comprehension. Ruffian is the greatest female Thoroughbred ever. That's closer to a fact than an opinion.
+Alan Clayton Indeed, unlikely he would have on dirt. In addition, literally anyone can say what you just did, though the intelligent ones would have said it gramatically correctly-"would have"..."would of" simply does not exist in the English language. Take away the "would". Instead of "I would of gone to the store" do you always say "I of gone to the store?" Hmm?? Do you?? "...of gone to the store"?? For your sake and mankind's I sure as fuck hope you don't. Now let's write properly. Do you say"I HAVE gone to the store"?? I'm crossing my fingers and toes you do and there's at least one brain cell somewhere in that head of yours. So inserting the "would" in front, I do hope you comprehend that the correct phrasing is "I WOULD HAVE gone to the store." Therefore, the proper aforementioned phrase, no matter likely and wildly incorrect, is "Frankel would HAVE tanked this horse." Although, you are part right in that the propensity is that Frankel would have tanked in a race with Arrogate on dirt. Additionally, a parrot can say what you did. However, only through elaboration and stating your case, presenting something -anything!- of evidentiary value, etc. can you validate making such a claim. Otherwise it's tantamount to saying, "The moon is made of cheese." Such a claim can have a strong case presented in it's favor, you simply refuse to do so. To the rubbish bin.
Frankel is one of my all time favourites. And certainly the best miler and probably 1m 2f horse I've seen. I suspect he would have gone on dirt, but you can never say. Likewise, you can't say arrogate would go as well on Turf. What I like are the memories that stand out as great. Frankel in the guineas and Queen Anne, Zafonic in the Guineas. Dancing brave in the arc, Nashwan in the Eclipse, Arazi (need I mention where), Rock of Gibraltar in the Gran Criterium. Dubai Millennium in Dubai. Secretariat in the belmont, the others didn't stay (sham) and were just poor. BUT you can't deny the brilliance on that day. We should just let it rest and appreciate another great horse. In this race, I thought he travelled better than the Breders Cup and also quickened on the turn better. It gives a sign that next year there may be more to come. And for that... I wait in anticipation.
This horse is not a all time great. He is a top 5 of this century. He is definitely not in spectacular bids leage. Arrogate has a couple track records not world records.
