A few times a year, the International Space Station puts on events where they transmit images on the 2m ham band using SSTV.
In this video I show how you can set up an RTL-SDR or SDRplay with free software. Best of all you can set up the software and leave it unmonitored.

Please increase volume! I am using microphone preamp, following guitar amplifier following another power amplifier... in order to be able to hear your voice.

Very good Alex. I've only recently got into SDR, with an RSP1A. Having fun exploring the capabilities. Your tutorial was very well done. I will try SSTV from the ISS soon. One curious thing I'm seeing often in UHF, is what I call Travelers. In the Waterfall, I see signals that move in frequency. They zigzag. Some only a few KHz, some as much as a MHz. Have you seen those? I have subscribed and looked forward to more.

Glad you enjoyed the video. The ISS isn't always transmitting SSTV, but they are good at notifying the community when SSTV events are planned. I have seen different "travellers" and have a couple ideas. Sometimes they appear to sweep across the entire band in one direction, I think that might be some type of fixed radar system. Other signals jump around in frequency, you don't see them shifting. It's more that they just disappear on one frequency and instantly jump to another frequency. I think that is called "trunking" and it's a common way for police or commercial users to share frequencies, often combined with with encryption. I haven't dug too deep into it but I think there are ways to decode trunked signals using an SDR or possibly two SDRs as long as the signals aren't actually encrypted. Hope that makes sense, SDRs are a lot of fun!
