Be it gaming industry or VFX (my background), people like to take shortcuts. Very few people made textures entirely from scratch. Simply not feasible drawing rocks when there's a million more important things to do on a project. A handful of stock images is all it takes to create hundreds of different surfaces.

@@houstonhelicoptertours1006 I know what you mean (I’m also an aspiring VFX artist), I just assumed the textures were done by hand since they looked so cartoony in Super Mario 64. The reverse engineering of Super Mario 64 is fascinating, but it’s definitely taken away a lot of the mysticism that the game used to have.
