It's cute because they don't realise that this is the 'tame' part of Berserk. None of this stuff would be considered spoilers btw, volumes 1-3 are considered a prologue section of sorts to introduce the main character and the world he lives in- it's a very long series with many villains that last for many volumes- these villains are literally just throw away ones that last for a volume or two and are not really important. It's also about 3 decades old now so... so to some it may be okay to talk about 'spoilers' because this part of the story was written in the late 80's. Berserk 1998 is the good anime, it covers volumes 4-13 roughly with a little bit of volume 1 and 3 but not much. Volume 4-14 is considered the 'beginning' of the story, it's like the fellowship of the rings section before shit gets real. All the other anime's are... well they're quite bad and don't care to much about accurately following the manga, to the point they squeeze volumes 1-16 in a single 20 minutes episode and mess around with the settings and characters and how they meet etc. It's a mess. I wouldn't recommend going near any of the anime except the 1998 one, otherwise your impression of Berserk will be quite bad. My advice is to read the manga first, until you finish or reach near volume 13, then you can watch the 1998 anime, or you can watch the 1998 anime then read berserk (because the anime ends of cliffhanger so you need to read it if you want closure to the story). Just keep in mind that volumes 1-3, are NOT fully adapted into the anime so you'll need to read those still at some point. There is a movie trilogy, but it's best watched after reading the manga or watching the 1998 anime because it's spoiler heavy while also lacking a lot of character development and world building as it seems to assume your already familiar with the story. Lastly, do not read or watch the series if you've got a weak stomach. A lot of sensitive subject matter is explored and very mature themes (Like rape, sexual abuse, child abuse, etc). It's also well known for it's absurd amount of nudity and gore and never pulls it's punches. None of this is the main focus of the story, there actually is a really deep and well fleshed out story beneath all the violence and gore, so if your hoping for mindless violence, well after the first couple of volumes this story may not be for you.
I've been reading comics, graphic novels, bande dessinée and manga all my life, and Berserk is my absolute favorite. There's a reason why the Berserk fandom is huge. The first few trades (A.K.A The Black Swordsman Arc, which is collected in the first Deluxe) aren't known for having stellar writing or art, but from the Golden Age Arc and onwards it's masterpiece on both aspects. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Reading through the Golden Age Arc and getting to the end was a very similar experience to watching the first season of Game of Thrones and becoming hooked (and shocked) after that ending. Knowing now that you've only ever read a few manga there's a few must-reads that I have to recommend: Vinland Saga, Vagabond, and 20th Century Boys/Monster (same author). There's just so many amazing mangas out there but I don't want to overwhelm you lol, so just give those 3 a try. As for Euro comics you should definitely try Elric by Julien Blondel and Requiem Vampire Knight. They're both Dark Fantasy with AMAZING art but RVK in particular is just insane and on part with Metabarons. Keep up the great work man! Cheers.
Oh man I'm glad you two enjoyed what you read so far. Berserk is by far one of the coolest manga created. Just wait until you get to the golden age and the eclipse; hopefully you'll be as hooked as I was during that time.

I just purchase the first 2 deluxe editions and am excited to start off the series. I have never read any manga before so this will be interesting. I have watched the 3 berserk movies on Netflix but other than that I am going in pretty much new to the topic.
1:05 The fact that they are bigger is what makes this book amazing, now we can read Miura´s work with higher quality. Manga artists normally draw in a A4-A3 size paper so when it´s reduced to a smaller print the art loses some of the quality on the lines and details. And Puck is a he. Really glad you enjoyed Berserk man. I got into this BECAUSE the Prime1 statues were speaking to me. No regrets whatsoever, and I'll tell you this, the statutes ARE incredible!! Yes the bases are huge but the space is well utilized with tons of Easter eggs and nods to the manga. Nice to see Phie on board as well. You guys are great!
Never heard of this before I saw Gem pick this up. Bought it on a whim and now that I just got volume 2 I started reading it and MAN this book was made for me! Gem with the picks ! Can't wait for all the volumes to come out
This is fast becoming one of my favourite channels. And you are correct, do not watch the animes before finishing the mangas. I did (the Golden Arc), and it kills a bit the begining of the story. Great book.
Berserk is legit. It was hard for me to accept the fact that I enjoyed it so much. I mean if you really take the time to soak in everything that's happening, it's pretty fucked up. With that said, I'm looking forward to buying vol 2 😂

Funny that you say Guts' sword is like Clouds from FF7; Its the opposite. Berserk started the whole oversized great sword trend that continues to dominate the high fantasy genre.

I was thinking about getting one of those statues, they look awesome. Yeah this series is really good, came across the anime when I was in college then I wanted more so I got the manga. Definitely in the top 5. Got the brand of sacrifice tattooed on my neck like Guts!! Keep up the reviews!!
The first issue came out in 1989. It's a long running manga and its the prototype for every Japanese character with a oversized sword. It's a masterpiece.

The 90's anime has about 20-ish episodes but I do recommend reading the manga first because the 90's anime is consider the good one but it ends on a cliffhanger.
The 97 Anime can be found right here on RU-vid it's 25 episodes both Subbed and Dubbed, the 3 Movies (Which cover the same volumes but go a tad further) can be found on Netflix if you have it. Both are good, but I think the 97 anime just hit the foreboding emotional notes better. Just a heads up, it was impossible for me not to want to read the Manga afterwards..

I watched the berserk anime like back in the mid 2000’s, like 2006 I think. And I had no idea there was a comic book before the show. That’s legit I’m bout to swoop that.

Gem, if you want to play an amazing Berserk game, the closest thing you'll come to is Dark Souls(especially)/Bloodborne/Sekiro. Overlapping values, themes and philosophy. They are difficult, unforgiving games at first, but they will reward you for persevering.
The anime and manga are both great ! I even joy the 2016 which could be waaaay better but ehh ive learned to love it. 1997 anime only has 25 ep which is perfect
If you want to read/watch a good manga series I think you and your wife would like Parasyte, it has a bit of everything when it comes to the genre. I watched the anime with a friend (which I’m super picky with) and I fell in love with the series. It kinda reminds me of the Prototype video games but only slightly. The best part is the anime is 24 episodes and the manga series is only 8 volumes. I think you and your wife might like it and awesome video Gem 💎

7:10 the reason the art style changes is because in the original magazine berserk serialized in, those painted-style pages were actually in full colour, but unfortunately, the colour pages didn't make it into the deluxe editions, unlike the Viz media JoJo hardcovers or other manga in those formats

Berserk has a 1996 anime with 25 episode then 3 anime movies that go over the same stuff as 1996 anime that came out 2013's and two 13 episode anime's series that go after the golden age arc that came out 2016-17
