This was an excellent review from both of you. As a native french speaker i grew up with Jodorowsky and Moebius. So i am always interested in what someone who grew up reading American comics has to say. I subscribed for the Marvel and DC Omnibus reviews mostly. The fact that you are open minded enough to also appreciate Mangas and European comics is the icing on the cake.
Watched this last night Gem, bought it off of Amazon (been delivered today), on your recommendation. Also bought the Megabarons because of all the comments in here. Looking forward to this universe.
Great to see you two getting into Jodorowsky & Moebius ... theirs is some fantastic books. You gotta track down Jodorowsky's films and give them a spin El Topo, Holy Mountain, Santa Sangre and especially the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune which is the precursor to Incal, Metabarons etc. It is fascinating stuff. Cheers.
Love this vid. I'm a huge Moebius fan. He is a Comics God. I almost stopped watching when you guys were about to launch into the 'spoilers' section but then I thought, damn, I've already read the Incal, all is safe, but then I totally forgot what happens at the end so now will have to read once more. Thanks!
Finally, I was waiting for this review! Had an idea you would like it. Once my wrist heals up I will read it. I also picked up some other stories from the Jodoverse in those deluxe coffee table editions. They look really awesome. Also got The Metabarons 40th year edition, highly recommended.
Great vid, glad that you both liked it so much. It’s one of my favourite books and certainly one of if not the best when it comes to art. The story is mindblowing too. You should do more videos together.
This sounds like a very interesting read and it’s cool to see that you and your wife do reads together and talk about what was your favourite parts and discuss about the story. That is the dream 😁 Awesome video Gem 💎
You weren't out of the loop, Brother. You just weren't around when Heavy Metal was serializing it here in the States. Actually, I haven't read it since then. Check out my favorite Moebius story - The Horny Goof. Cool to see Phie reading stuff. I'd love to see y'all do a vid on Promethea.
Great review. In Europe this is one of the most well known and influental comics of all time. It is a must read for every comic afficionado, although not everyone likes it. Similar to Sandman, but even maybe even more of a must read.
Cool review. Always loved Incal in the pages of Heavy Metal. The colors on Moebius's food just popped off the pages. Next, read Bouncer, Jodorowsky's western comic!
So much fun to see you discovering the Incal. It really is without equal. You've watched the Holy Mountain? Anyways... this stuff is peerless, and your enjoyment of it is so infectious! Props!
Omg...you got the over-sized books. Big bucks, but SO WORTH IT! Isn't it cool getting introduced to Jodorowsky? What a breath of fresh air he is. A true diamond in the rough, I love his and Moebius's work. Have you seen "Jodorowsky's Dune"? It'll change the way you see things in movies. A must-watch documentary!
I just read this all and it not something I thought I'd be into but uno it was a great read, u sumeed it up when u say this book evolves and thats so true so much is happening when the book progress great read will re read it in the future for sure
GEM MINT: check out a youtube video titled 'What Star Wars owes the French comics', it shows the French, comics that dated back in the early 60's and 70's where Star Wars and the Fifth Element had depicted from years and decades before either of movies ever existed. It's an interesting video to follow up on the origin history of The Incal comic book series.
Great video there with a great book! The character's name -- John Difool, pronounced like that -- is actually a pun on John The Fool. If you liked it, I recommend that you read the other books from Jodorowski, mainly The Metabaron. And then, maybe you can also take a look at books from Druillet which have Space opera elements with a lot of 'Psicadelic' art. Kudos to the couple! :)
That was a lovely video! I've been following your channel for a while and it has got me into comics myself! (I'm a game collector in the first place). If you don't mind, what do you recommend for new readers to get? Omnis or paperbacks? I would like to get complete stories but the bulkiness of the books make it seem annoying to read int he format. I'de like to get started on X-Men soon! :D
Dope review amazing book influenced so many writers encompassing so much dropping some serious shit from a high tech space opera to the creation of a merkabah I hope they follow through and redo the rest in this format tecnopriests and metabaron I must of been lucky got my copy fairly late and it #18
This artist influenced so many, from William Gibson and onto all culturally relevant Sci Fi in the last 50 years. Blade Runner, Fifth element, too many to mention were either directly or indirectly using ideas from this brilliance.
This was dope totally agree this book went everywhere the other two books in the series after the incal and before the incal are two different stories in the same universe about John Dafool but from 2 different dimensions and it completes the story the two books continues the story of John falling to his death
Jodorowsky (chilean) is nowadays 90 years old (still alive) and he has a prolific career in movies, novels and comics. Look up for “El Topo”, “Fando & Lis” and “The Holy Mountain” films.
Nice Video! Great to see a NON-testosterone reviewer in the room. Just in case you are interested, there are other "absolute" type editions of the Metabarons, Technopriests, Before the Incal and Final Incal. Some of them are whales as well. Also, feel free to bring the wife back again!
Would it be better to get the regular hardback over the oversized deluxe? I noticed you didn't like the quality of yours and I can get the regular hardback for just 30 dollars.
@@GemMintCollectibles So I got my standard hardback copy today, 37 bucks shipped which is damn good IMO. Definitely not as eye catching as the deluxe version, but I can tell it won't be as prone to falling apart like that. It's actually reasonably high quality and really feels broken in just out of the packaging. Pages are thick and pretty well satured with color. It's still pretty sizable as well and possibly one of the most content packed "one shot"? I've ever got for its price. About 1/3 of the way done. Thank you AGAIN for the recommendation. I'm off to read Preacher Absolutes that I got for Christmas just like the wifey. You guys should do a video where she shares her thoughts on THAT!
Vinland Saga is soooo ridiculously good and fun for collectors. Each drop has me waiting in anticipation since I'm only reading the official serialized English hardbacks.
You should watch the documentary about Jodowsky. He was original director for Dune before David Lynch. The doc is about that time. I think it’s “jodowsky’s dune”.
You know when you see an interesting person somewhere, maybe RU-vid, and the thought "who would this person be married to?" creeps up on you for no reason? I had that, then he posted this. I think I'm magical.
I said a rhyme to my girl: Incal was read by Gem and Phie now it should be read by you and me. I stopped before spoilers (16:33) I guess we gonna pick it up.
Two questions: 1) Hows the quality of the physical book? Is it worth a pick up in this format? 2) 6 brothers? Gem damn man that is a minefield to navigate. Hope you didn't take too many beatings before a date night brother.
lmao... 1) the book seems to be warping and the pages seem to be falling down. 2) They all step brother except one and ill whoop all them up...lol na, they all younger though.
@@GemMintCollectibles Good man, stay strong and don't let em punk you. If Manimal steps to you, you need to check him too. Good for you on sending him to Wondercon, a true Kingpin!
Moebius and the creator of Valerian both did concept art not the writing for Fifth Element. The director Luc Bessen grew up on his french graphic novels and directed both Fifth Element and Valerian. But the thing is, soooo much was derived from French graphic novels including the American magazine Heavy Metal which came from moebius and philipe druillet and other artists, called Metale (without the "e" it's just to show pronunciation) Hurlant. And after Jodorwoski couldn't get Dune off the ground he used Moebius who did concept work for Dune to be the artist for his Incal and Metabaron comics. And Luc Besson intended for the Fifth Element to be an Incal variation. Go back to old Metale Hurlant magazines and youll see stuff in there you'll find in Star wars and other American sci fi movies. The Milenium Faulcon was a take on Valerians ship from the graphic novel. I think the copy you have might have a note from the editor or someone in the back saying, "please stop ripping off this book". I actually have a copy of Metaborons Genesis: Castaka, which started the whole Metabarons lore by Jodorowski. French graphic novels are a really good sci fi read.
Yo gem,you remind me of "tommy" from the Starz series, POWER!!! awesome series ,I believe it was 5 seasons that has spin offs starting next month, September😎 when talks of luc besson, the 5th element is my least favorite and worst bruce Willis film to be honest in my humble opinion. I like the professional/ kiss of the dragon/ Lucy/anna/taken,Lockout(written films by luc and directed films by luc😎
Jodoverse consists of many titles and most of them have similar kind of vibe like the Incal. I'd suggest checking out other stories of DiFool first (Before the Incal, After the Incal, Final Incal) before jumping into other parts of the Jodoverse.
If you have a chance...watch "Jodorowsky's Dune"...he talks about "L'Incal"...french version of The Incal...I'm french Canadian...trust me...stay minty fresh!
@@GemMintCollectibles Exactly. He is from Chile (although his name is obviously not from there, his parents moved to Chile from Europe), so he pronounced his name in Spanish.
Guess i starting work a little later - self employment is great - sucks that book is beat like that - good to know - kind of cool you got the Steph up in here - way cooler than manimal ... that guy is an alcoholic
Back in 2015, Sony struck a deal with Disney's Marvel Studios that permitted Spider-Man to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to the terms of that deal, as reported by Vanity Fair (the deal has never been publicly disclosed) Spider-Man would be shared across Sony and Marvel productions for a total of five films.
Spidey has been in three thus far and Sony cannot incorporate the character into its own extended universe until the deal comes to a conclusion. That five-film cap will presumably be reached when two already filmed movies debut: "Avengers: Endgame" in April and "Spider-Man: Far From Home" in July (it is likely Spider-Man is in Endgame, though he has not been in any of the trailers released so far). Grwat, two normal marvel Readers trying to understand the new conciousness, which they Just opened the doors to. 😃 Now do yourself a favour and read the meta Baron Saga. When you think that this Was weird shit, you've ain't seen nothing yet! 😉
