I’m not an academic, I just stumbled across this and watched it, and it absolutely blew my mind. I’ve been to Pompeii, though not Herculaneum, and it is so tantalising to imagine what these scrolls contain. Fantastic project!

Geeee!!! The mindset of this guy is so clear, logical and methodologically constructed that even I - and I have no scientific education whatsoever - can understand him. Bravo Maestro!!! and Thank you.

I am so excited about this! I try to keep following on developments and I can onlyl hope that the technology will only get better until we can unscroll a lost play by Euripides!

It’s highly likely there are also palimpsests on some of the Herculaneum scrolls, as papyrus and other writing media were expensive and worth recycling when later scribes had more “important” things to record on them. Right now it’s hard to imagine that any of those erased texts would reveal themselves this way, but with ever finer resolution for the tomography (down to microscopic views of the fibers capable of showing dents and bruises in them) and given time enough for this deep learning technique to mature, I’ll bet there will be many more surprises in store.

Palimpsests exist only in parchments, not in papyri.

@@martinrosenthal3127 Not sure why my comment disappeared. I mentioned that they're extremely rare but that they do exist, and entered a reference by Thomas Schmidt on the subject. Thanks.

I attended your presentation at the Getty and I'm just as amazed and excited by this method today as I was then! This is just so wonderfully and fantastically awesome!

In your scans, did you use light sources other than what’s visible to the human eye? Like Ultraviolet?

It seems that the slides go faster than the talk, very distracting. Could this be fixed?
