There is something very special about paddling & then camping next to water. Glad you got to have some surf & turf action.

that feeling of peace that comes from solitude after using the power of your own body to reach a place is exactly why I love camping so much more when it involves a bike. It's also a similar feeling when we can sail somewhere without using an engine. Something about using nature and your own power to get to a place just makes the experience so much more rewarding and allows the system to relax more thoroughly.

Hello Chris and hello to the desert Fox...Parker. I am sorry I have not commented as how good your videos are and how energizing the two of you are when bikepacking. Keep up the good work...I rode my bicycle across the US from Vancouver WA to Portland Maine and down to NYC two years ago and many of those areas in Washington and Oregon are amazing. You do a great job with the filming and editing and you and Rob are hysterical. Stay well and keep putting out this great content. Cheers and if I ever run into you and the desert Fox, burgers and beers are on me.....

Thanks! BTW Ran the Klickitat last weekend at about 980 CFS.... it was pretty low, just under the recommended lowest limit (1000 CFS). I'd say that Clackamas would be a better first Bikerafting route! There were a lot of strainers and sweepers and exposed rocks on the Klickitat. Though since you have some paddling experience, you'd probably be just fine.
@BernhardMasterson
@BernhardMasterson 2 года назад
@@pnwbikepacking Cool! My schedule didn't align with flows and spring trips my friends made on the Klickitat. One of the benefits to packrafts is that we can boat at water levels lower than rafts and hard shell kayakers. One fun way to improve boat handling skills and paddle strokes is kayak polo. There is a group of us who play regularly on the Willamette on Fridays at 5:00 during the summer. Let me know if you are interested and I'll get you connected. Also we are having a two-day polo event on the Washougal the last weekend of this month, beginners welcome. Here is a vid from last year. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C1qr3LmqMB8.html

Oregon Kayak and Canoe Club (OKCC) is also a great resource. Group trips at different skill levels with a focus on building better paddlers.

Chris, really enjoy your videos, excellent work! Nice to see you got an Alpaca Caribou, I have a scout and a classic on order, best backcountry raft brand IMO. Was just up at Takhalak Lake. Try using an October Caddis fly pattern. It’s a dry fly and I drag it around wet on a dry line about 40 feet behind my boat on 3wt. Adams fly works well too as does the Bitch Creek fly. Action can be spotty, but I always get bit when I try those flys. Good luck man!!
@pnwbikepacking
@pnwbikepacking 2 года назад
Thanks for the fishing beta Nick! Hoping I can get to some lake this next weekend and ill try taking your advice! Sometimes I wonder if I should have gone with the classic vs. the Caribou! I guess thats why you need N + 1 packrafts right?

Right on that is my favorite area to explore. Them skeeters up there are merciless. How much does the packraft weigh. I use a 4 piece spinning rod and toss spinners and spoons in the high alpine lakes.
@pnwbikepacking
@pnwbikepacking 2 года назад
Yeah they were bad. I hope to get back here in a few months and hopefully there will be no skeeters! Packraft on it's own weights in at 5lbs. BUT you've also got to factor in the lifejacket, paddle, inflater bag, repair kit. When it's all said and done, the kit is probably like 8-10 lbs.

Great video Chris really tranquil, I think you need to change your fly depending on the lake you might have more luck maybe 😆. Loved the shot at 6:30 did you have the camera in the water if so great call it worked out really well 👏. Great stuff love your videos keep them coming.
@pnwbikepacking

Thanks for watching! Yeah I think I needed to do more experimentation with flies! The water was pretty shallow for the first 20 feet so I walked out a ways and set up the tripod in the water for the shot at 6:30. Appreciate the kind words!

Have you tried a chironomid dropper off the hook of a dry as an indicator?
@CanadianSledDog

That looked very enjoyable. Do you troll with the pack raft? Basically all my success in the canoe is by trolling, not sure why, maybe it helps find the fish or maybe I'm just terrible at jigging.
@pnwbikepacking
@pnwbikepacking Год назад
Hey, thanks for watching! This was a super enjoyable and relaxing trip. Yeah, my "strategy" was to basically troll. When the winds would pick up it was a bit tricky. Hoping to head back to the lake again this year and have another go!

What can you tell me about the brand and your assessment of the raft you have?
@pnwbikepacking
@pnwbikepacking Год назад
Hey Steve, t he raft is made by a company called Alpacka and the model is the Caribou. (www.alpackaraft.com/products/caribou) It is designed specifically for bikerafting, so it does a great job for that! I am not a good paddler and don't have experience with other boats... I am in over my head on Class 3, especially with a bike, you can do it with these rafts... but that isn't really what it is designed for. I got the model with the TiZip which allows me to store things in the boat which is awesome! If you want to do Class II and under bikerafting trips, l highly recommend this raft! Hope this helps.

I was just in that zone backpacking up in Goat Rocks for the first time. This area is amazing and Im definatly coming back with my bike. Also, I was on the fence but this and the previous video has convinced me that I need a pack raft. What raft are you using? Any suggestions would be appreciated if you have the time. Thanks again for the amazing content!

@pnwbikepacking
@pnwbikepacking 2 года назад
Hey Adam, thanks for watching and glad you got the answer. (Alpacka Caribou). I think the raft you get really depends on how you end up intending to use it the majority of the time. So far im pretty stoked on the Caribou. Alpacka has a great reputation and you probably can't really go wrong with any of their rafts.
