I cannot thank you guys enough for actually talking about mental health in general and issues like this. As a software engineer I find that most of the things you are talking about on Mental Health Minute are extremely applicable to what I do in my daily life.

Same. As someone who ended up doing software development in healthcare instead of medicine itself, I feel you. It didn’t help that my direct supervisor in my last project kept saying how “shitty” my code and architecture is, in part because he could not get what JSON is or the benefits of making functions. It didn’t matter the department had no good development process, gitflow process, issue tracking, qa, devops, or project management. It didn’t matter to him that they bought this amazing server just to run the program in single threaded mode? It definitely didn’t matter to him that my approach gave them an infinitely larger uptime and infinitely better error handling. He just wanted his old prototypical shitty script that had no regard for the fact the IT department had to be bothered every Tuesday morning to clean up the damage his old code would cause. I particularly hate when developers and engineers call someone else’s code shitty without first looking at why it got to the way it did. That supervisor is a physician and not a true engineer. I think I suffered from imposter syndrome these past two years as a result. I think I still do because I no longer work with peers that can provide objective feedback on how I can improve. But you know, for devs, if your code is doing a task better than what existed before, I think you are doing great. That’s my positive end note to us all.

Thank you for opening up about imposter syndrome. As a trauma surgeon, I find it incredibly affirming to hear individuals in other high-stakes professions like yours address this issue. My wife, also a medical professional, and I often discuss how we, too, wrestle with these feelings despite our accomplishments. Your candid conversation serves as a reminder that imposter syndrome doesn’t discriminate by career or success level. It’s reassuring to know we’re not alone in this struggle, and I appreciate your courage in bringing this often private battle into the public sphere.

Thank you so much for covering this, I'm with Gonky in that I didn't even know this had a name, and more importantly didn't know there were strategies to deal with it. There's such a huge societal push towards humility, which is a great thing, but not enough attention towards taking credit for your achievements, and recognizing you're where you are for a good reason. Also that guy announcing his unsubscription 😂

I think part of it is the fear of the elevated expectations (pressure) that success can bring. If you are learning to do something and few believe you can do it, the expectations of you are low and there is little pressure. When you succeed, the expectations of you can grow and much more is now 'expected' of you. Saying 'I just got lucky' is an attempt (JMHO) to ward off raised expectations and the pressure that comes with it. Some like and welcome the raised expectations and pressure while others feel overwhelmed by it.

Same as Gonky said, I hadn't heard about the Imposter Syndrome before but do recognize parts of this in myself too. I always classified is as 'modesty' but it could be indeed Imposter Syndrome. Next to this, I'm very happy I found your channel some time ago, I can learn and reflect a lot on it. And next to that, appreciate the mix of sharp humour, knowledge and wisdom. Greetings from someone who as a teen wanted to be pilot but never really went for it due to self doubt and more like that. Happy 2024 to you all!

Hi Guys, I'm just an ordinary guy, (I've been a road worker for 45years), but I'm also a student gyrocopter pilot, hoping to become an instructor some day, the first time I flew the aircraft for the entire flight (this included my first landing on a grass strip),I remember, after landing back at our home field, as I got out of the aircraft, my first thought was,"I can't believe I did all that", perhaps that's a sign of imposter syndrome, for someone like me, this is a really big deal, and while I'm only on the ground floor of the aviation world, I do get what you guys are saying, it is reassuring to hear that it isn't just me, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.

Thank you guys for talking about this. In my adolescence, I unintentionally let my lack of self esteem become a trait of my personality, and it's taken me many years of therapy to claw my way back to a state of relative health. It's hard work but so worth it and it's encouraging to see folks I look up to talk about it with honesty.

Imposter syndrome has followed me throughout my life from athletics in grade school to a 10 year music career and now (though I'm much more aware of it) as a licensed mechanical engineer. Huge props to you guys for talking about these things. So many times, it feels like the natural self-doubt response to thinking "I clearly have imposter syndrome" is to self-counter with "or maybe I just really AM an imposter." Such a hard hole to climb out of, but hearing others talk about it, especially those who do/have done things so many of us aspire to (Top Gun had me 100% wanting to be a naval aviator until I was told my eyes suck) makes a bigger impact than you probably know. Thank you all for your service and thank you for creating such great content.

For what it's worth, I think dude who went, _"Unsubscribed.Later,"_ was compensating for something in himself that he doesn't like, else why make a big statement like _"I'M_ unsubscribing! _I'm_ obviously important and I want you to know it as I demonstrate how your channel will fold within 3 days after _my_ announcement!" It's like some sort of neurotic hubris, combined with, _"Oh no, my hero fighter pilot dudes are talking about MENTAL HEALTH? They are admitting that they have doubts? Screw that, I only subscribe to a channel if the person(s) running it are infallible gods!"_ And so begins another round of humans shooting themselves in the foot by thinking in grandiose terms that are....guess what?... untenable & impossible. I HAVE HIGH STANDARDS is gonna be on these people's gravestone, probably. I wonder how many 'failures' are actually successes that murdered their own accomplishments in the cold blood of Impostor syndrome? As someone who deals with this, I think I hate it as much as Wombat does. But Wombat, Mover, Gonky, and Doug aren't just sitting around manufacturing despair; you guys are taking this on right to the merge, and I for one am here to tell you, this 'mental health corner' you have here is useful beyond measure. So thank you guys, straightup, for having the sack to address this issue.

Like Gonky, I too never heard of "Imposter syndrome". But the med person I was talking to (right after I came back from A-land) had told me that I had the symptoms you laid out. He didn't call it anything. He just told me, after I told him all that I had done before combat and during combat, that I earned all the rating's, accolades, recognition etc. for all I had done to get where I was in the military and life. Soo many times I have met people, and after talking to them, were surprised that I never let on to what all I had done. Thanks, Mover, wombat and Gonky for putting this out there. I have since done a better job at "combatting" this syndrome.

From the bottom of my heart, I'm grateful for the candidness from you three on this topic. Hearing people with more experience and expertise than I express the same sentiments that I have felt as a commercial pilot who has been in and out of building hours for the past few years is an enormous weight off my shoulders. It's awful insulating oneself from pain of failure and setbacks by always managing expectations at the cost of disassociating from what one has accomplished up til now. The Japanese say that 'the nail that sticks out gets hammered.' Imposter syndrome feels like going through life stooped over. You may not get put in your place but you won't appreciate everything you might be missing out on keeping your head down. The missed opportunities to make a difference in your day-to-day or to put yourself out there. Thank you for engaging and being open with your community.

I can relate to this. In my goal to be a professional pilot, I was asked to take a position as a CFI and ultimately a CFII. I really struggled with this. I knew what I knew, but I wasn't quite sure I could get it out of my head and into someone else's. The biggest fix for me was just what Doug said. I relied on the process and the thoughts of others that knew I would be a good fit. Once I got over my anxieties, I found instructing to be some of the most rewarding flying I have ever done.

I do appreciate this video, important topic talked about by competent people. However... -"God has a plan for me, for everyone." How do you not see that this expression is a clear, and undeniable symptom of the same imposter syndrom that you _are_ talking about? Why believe that there is a tri-omni Creator, if not to deject your own importance to the reality in which we live. And... in order to reject responsibility, perhaps? -"But, everything has an exception, and God is that exception." Exceptions are to be expected to everything, because _we_ are not all-knowing. Whether there are exceptions to _everything_ ; we can't say for certain, because we do not know all there is to know about everything. (Yet?;-) However... when the scope of consideration is reduced, we can reasonably claim to know "everything about it", and can reasonably say that there are no exceptions. Or be able to identify what those exceptions are. How many of those, before no longer being "exceptions", is for another day. Looking at reality, we _can_ with reasonable certainty say, that no Creator(s) described by ancient men, exist. As described... -"But God is all knowing." Again, imposter syndrom. "I'm just a part of His plan". And if there is an all-knowing Creator, then you are of the hook. "It's not my fault..."
