when i was a kid back in the early 60's we flew control line and freeflight planes but never got to r/c because they barely existed except for maybe adults. i always wanted to try it and this looks like a good entry level. thnx.
I found it struggle to get the motor running. When I did, plane and motor disappeared forever. The KK Champ never did get off the ground. More decades on, I'm taking it up again. The joy is in the making.
Same here. I built free flight Keil Kraft gliders (Soarer Baby) which went well but a drag having to retrieve. Then control line Keil Kraft Ranger which I took to school model airplane club. Master flew it well and I crashed it. So depressed so never built another. Would love to try an r/c aircraft so watching this is fun. This quite small - do you think a larger wingspan eg 3-4 feet would give more progression ie slower
@@paredding i built mostly guillows and sterling kits in my young teenage years and then eventually got into cars, girls and a job to make money. that was like 60 years ago now, ogeesh.
As someone who's always wanted to try a radio controlled model, I've got to say this looks fantastic! I'm amazed how robust it is and how well it coped with the conditions. Really encouraging. 😎
Looks like a really good model for a beginner. Classic high-wing airframe, durable, and it looks like "expert" mode actually works. LOL, newbies should fly in calmer weather!
I apologize if it was not your intention, but I think your video is one of the funniest on the web. I laughed so loud about everything, you made my day. So much that happens, so many crashes, so many more things... I love it! Thank you!
I do this hobby for fun and no other reason...so if it's entertaining and viewers have a laugh that's all good. Your comment made my week actually. Much appreciated.
Maybe one little edit to take out a boring bit that would waste your time but otherwise that was it. Appreciate the feedback. Yes...a bit windy but good to show I thought. Would fly very nicely on a zero wind day.
Not the best day perhapse but very robust model! Andrew Newton also reviewed this on a calm day and it looked the perfect model for a beginner! Well done.
Yup. I only edit out stuff if it's boring but I think it helps to show mistakes and when things go wrong so viewers who buy the product (or similar) don't do the same thing.
Based on this video, I bought one of these Mini 450 Xcub planes for my grandson. It cost £50, but with delivery from Ali Express and VAT, it came to just over £70. When static testing it out of the box, it struck me how little the control surfaces moved - barely perceptible - but I figured that it had been factory tested, and it's very light, so this must be enough for what it needs to do. Also - I had seen this video, where it appears to have the authority it needs. My grandson practised on a PC-based simulator with a USB controller that looks just like a RC transmitter, and as he was showing good competence, we went out to fly the model today. It was calm, and we chose a field that was edged with woods, but far enough away so as not to be an obstacle. There was no suitable runway, so we put it in Beginner mode, and I threw the model and my grandson had the controls. The Xcub flew in a huge curve, but he could not make that curve any tighter. He should have killed power, but when you're doing something for the first time, your mind doesn't respond well to an emergency, so it went behind the trees, and we found it in a patch of gause - with no propeller. I went back there with a pair of seceteurs to cut the gause away, but a black propelled in the leaf-litter is not easy to see, and I didn't find it. I have looked online, and see 4 propellers for £35 - Holy Moly - that's more than half the price of the plane. There was a spare in the kit - but we only have one propeller now. There are other propellers much cheaper, but I don't know the pitch of this one, so although the others have a 4-digit spec printed inn the plasti (diameter and pitch, I suspect), I don't know if these are a sutable replacement or not These little plastic propellers must be turned out for barely more than pennies! Can you give any advice for where to get them at a sensible price? I'm going to have to get at the servos now as well, to work out why they move the control surfaces so little - so I hope I don't have to break anything to get at them.
The black cover over the top of the cockpit is held on by double-sided tape and can be got off with a bit of effort. The servo for the ailerons has a cross-piece on top of it to control both ailerons, but the wires that connect to the aileron horns were poorly adjusted, effectively bending them and making them drag against the holes where they go through the fuselage. I re-bent them so that doesn't happen any more, and it seems to me that the cross-piece on the servo moves more than it did before, but it still doesn't look enough to me. The servo is self-centering, and feels very stiff to move away from that position by hand with power off. I'll try it again when the weather permits.
Remember my first flight probably the most excitement of times during my many years of model flying inc. aerobatic comps Sadly after moving to Ireland an then to here in New Zealand couldn’t find a local club so haven’t flown for the best part of 20 years but still miss it
My first plane was a warbird, a Corsair ultra micro, no gyros, I learned pretty quickly because I was in air cadets and flew gliders before. This plane looks perfect for a beginner to learn the basics on.
The first 3 trials to fly this little sweety were so funny! The backwards flying in the wind was astonishing! Thanks for the entertaining video from a heli guy!!
Great stuff. I am tempted but I think I'm getting too old to run after the thing when I crash it which is inevitable. Good video fellas, informative with a bit of a giggle. Loved it.
Nicely made video! This plane is exactly what I am looking for. My question is whether the radio control device is also in the package? Some RC plane manufacturers say one should use one's smartphone as remote control. But I have no smartphone.
Looks like a lot of fun but where in the UK can a beginner learn to fly. When I was at school we just went to the local park and nobody said anything and we just got on with it . However, the world has changed since my youth so do we need permits and licences etc. Silly questions I know but I quite fancy one of those planes - how much are they?
im sorry. i really dont think this should be a first plane. i deeply recommend the cheapest plane you should get is the mini aeroscout. it can fly anywhere its not big not not super small. ive been flying for many years and i still enjoy the mini scout. if you have hte money get the big scout but the small scout is good enough! regardless i loved the video!
Sorry, but not too many people would agree with you there. The re-branded Esky EYAS (Eagles) which is sold as the Aeroscout by Horizon Hobby IS quite a good plane for pilots with some little experience. (2nd or 3rd plane.) But the Mini Aeroscout is recognized as a very poor plane for beginners - not anywhere near the same quality as the larger 1.1m plane. These are a possible choice as an absolute starter plane for beginners but are only a second choice behind the Volantex versions. (V761-4 Sport Cub 500) You would only choose this if the price was quite a bit less than the Sport Cub.
@theoztreecrasher2647 i appreciate the honest response! And i dotn understand why the mini scout is hated on very much. I find it to be a great little flyer, sure i cant bind it to my 18 but its whatever. If there was one like that jn that orice range i could binf to my 18 i would buy it in a heart beat. I will buy what you talked about and the video and test those out before i say anything else. Cheers
I've been in and out of rc planes for over 40 years and sorry, but many things about this video are how to put someone OFF aero modelling. That said, with all the computerisation now, no one has to learn how to fly properly anyway. Everything already built by some Chinese kids and a computer that flys for you. What's the point really.
Hmm, on other hand, i think classic trainers like AXN Floater or Bixler would be better for a newbie. They are large enough to be stable and motor on the back is always a plus for crash resistance. Based on personal experience.
Only 'too windy' if the aeroplane doesn't have enough power to fly into the wind. Not the case with this in that wind. 'Too wet' is a thing I say regularly but never too windy 🤣
I bought one of the warbirds last year as my first RC plane and it was fun while the props in the box lasted. Sadly, the replacement props from the manufacturer (costing aprox £6 a piece) would break at the slightest incident. It actually proved quite an expensive little plane considering it's total flying hours (minutes).
Looks like a refined version of the Volantex birds, with its bigger wheels and steering tail wheel. And now we also know where these new Hobbyzone planes come from, just rebranded from these... Missed chance that expert mode still has no gyro assist, which would make these more stable with self leveling off.
Very few low wind flying days when I go out...and this flying site is on top of a hill. Great for views but not for low wind. It flew fairly well in that 10-15mph wind...it'll fly great in zero to low wind. Garaunteed.
@@EssentialRC I can imagine it would be great in low wind, I have one of those twin prop jet airliners models and that performs very well and survives my inept flying :0) I like the scale of this one, as you say like a bush plane
I want to locate and buy a transmitter and receiver for micro mini servos. Where do I find one????? It seems that the micro mini servos use way less voltage
All receivers support the standard voltages needed for servos. I use RadioMaster so my recommendation is a TX16S Mk 2 ELRS version and an ER6 or ER8 receiver. uk.banggood.com/custlink/3vDIESimzL and uk.banggood.com/custlink/3m3SRZiGqe
@@EssentialRC I especially enjoyed the bit where you walked 300 yds into the middle of a huge field - I had assumed, to get far away from any possible obstacle - then immediately flew it into a fence post about 6ft away!
I did not like mine. It snap rolls way too easy and does not recover as advertised. The props pop off mid flight and the replacements are on backorder until November.
Thats Cool Thats what I need always wanted too give planes a Go , Plus were got a good Park across the road it handled going flat out Into the fence OK Witch is what I would prolly do LOL 25 min flying Time Woohoo Sign me up , Imight get one Cheers
This is definitely not for a beginner. It is too small to be stable and too little to see it. I will rather go with something like the Multiplex Twinstar, a model plane who can practically fly by itself.
My 49 year old eyes would lose this really fast being so small. Having zero experience in these i can only go off opinion when i say the small size improves the durability but increases the learning curve in flight. I'd love to see this on a day without hurricane level winds (you know, cuz it's tiny lol)
Plan is to fly it on a calm evening this week if get the chance. Have had so much very nice feedback about it flying in that wind that it needs to come out again for another spin in better conditions.
I'm really puzzled. I've been trying to post a comment that I thought might add positively to the debate on these planes. I post it and then very soon it just isn't there any more. Are comments only being published selectively? I think I'm going to give up as its too much effort :-(
Not by me. I delete comments only when they are abusive normally. I checked and no comments held by RU-vid for my review either. Only happens when a link in the comment or bad language
@@EssentialRC Very weird and tx for replying. Might try again later but basically I agree strongly with your view that these planes can serve a very useful training purpose 👍
It’s too fast for an absolute beginner. It’s too temperamental for a beginner. I love all Aircraft, they are my passion. And thought that maybe I can get something out of this hobby by getting into RC models. But if this is the best beginners aircraft model! Then it’s not for me.
We'll have to disagree then. If folks want to "try" out RC flying they will want everything in the box, and for it to be resilient/durable and relatively cheap. I'll fly this again on a calm/zero wind day since so many aren't taking the conditions on that day into account. 🙄
I started with an Eachine Spitfire. Fast and invisible against the trees but easy to fly, just quick. Keep it in the novice setting and learn to fly it then progress. The gyro is excellent at sorting out your mistakes. So I disagree with your opinion. As It is slower, It would make a great beginners plane.
Nobody will want to buy that after watching someone that can supposedly fly struggling to get it in the air and it’s not designed to take off from the grass its little to no chance in most places
Not wrong. It's quite common for different vendors to sell the same product under a different brand name with a different scheme but always possible there are other subtle upgrades in the electronics and features. This is the way.
Bet you the Mehican Cartels have fleet of these flying in their products daily. They probably have kids on payroll whose only job is to fly drones and RC planes daily.
I had my champ for about 4 mins total before a huge gust of wind just took it away never to be seen again, still have the remote and box and now I am in fear of losing another rc plane :(
If I did that it wouldn't move at all on that short grass. Sometimes best approach is to give it instant burst of power so it gets some wind over the horizontal stabiliser and elevator.
What would you recommend with a bigger wingspan, (around 1 - 1,5 meters) And still a rock solid plane in the air ?? (Rtf plane) I need a new plane but there’s thousands to choose between, so maybe you can make a top 3 or top 5 VERY good planes.. I’m not a beginner and I’m not an expert, maybe in the middle 😁 I hope you can help me out here and other people as well can also recommend rock solid airplanes in the air) .. and of course, not a expensive airplane.. budget max 200€ if that’s possible?? Regards from Denmark 🇩🇰
Yeah...but so many either think their opinion is the only one, that everyone else is wrong, can't accept other opinions are valid and get nasty if you disagree. Luckily I can just delete and block in 1 click.
I think that's way too skittish a plane for a beginner. When I learned to fly RC, I did it with a much bigger slower and more stable trainer design and had an experienced pilot do the takeoff and landing until I'd learnt to steer it in circuits in the air, high enough up so the other pilot could take over if things got hairy, which they do very quickly on a novice flight, hahahahaha! It takes time to get the hang of piloting remote control, especially when it's coming towards you and the controls are effectively reversed. These days could probably do much of the training on a flight sim like the free windows one from FMS. The advantage of a tiny plane like this one is that it's more durable and the startup cost is low, but you need both of those and more because it's going to be crashing endlessly and require spare parts a lot so in the end it's probably cheaper to buy a proper trainer or even go to a club and ask for a few lessons before buying this little one 😀
