+Spenigat Mancer You should pick up his slack! We need someone pouring those many hours of hard work into videos, and clearly Matt isn't doing it, you could probably do much better.
+Andrew Rabon "In Kula World 4 things take a turn for the worse. They completely forget the simplicity of the first 2 games and ignore the innovations of the third."
+Hunk Hill "I do like cubes, I find it amazing that every shape in a video game can be made from simple polygons and cube is the most elegant form of them. They are the simple building blocks of all things in video games and every time I think about that it fills me with awe, you could say that I am a massive fan of cubes. That said, this game has too many fucking cubes."
I think I might've played the hell out of this game on a demo disk that came with a Pizza Hut pizza back in the late 90's/early 00's. God, what a time that was.
Game critique aside, I'm frequently impressed with the video editing in these reviews. Clips are rarely if ever repeated, often showcase the element or detail being discussed, and never show irrelevant information. That's a lot more awareness than a lot of video critics can claim, and it's as much of a joy to see as the reviews are to hear. Moments like the end of this video, where the clip demonstrates a narrated principle more abstractly or symbolically, are the icing on the cake that finish off a whole video's sense of connectedness. Bravo, Matthew.
+Basem Isam I am a fan too but he rarely uploads now. I really like Smudboy now, took me MONTHS to find someone I like. He does Plot analysis mostly- he's very very good and my 'new' matthewmatosis now. :P Give it a go cause you may have similar tastes to mine, and I know how hard it is for us to find people in this genre/intelligent game analysis vids without dumb people shouting and trying to be famous :P haha. Gotta love those humble intellectuals
oh yeah, he's in my go-to videos folder too haha. I have been a fan of Noah for a while! I dig deep for these kinds of videos cause I can't get enough of them, haha. I really liked his too, I wish there was more of that sub genre. Until then I am exhausting old Bill Kurtis crime investigation shows like American Justice. I recommend his shows too btw, as another quality narrator alternative.
In the late 90s a video game shop opened up in the small seaside town I lived in at the time, in the UK. My brother and I would go frequently, browse the shelves and trade/buy games, but they also had consoles set up for kids to play new releases which was awesome. The staff would also be playing games on the big TV behind the counter, one day we went in and the owner was playing Kula World. It’s such a powerfully nostalgic memory, I asked what the game was called and I’ll never forget the title although I never owned the game outside of the demo. I tried tracking down the game as an adult, only to find that it was very expensive- luckily I now live in North America and it’s called “Roll Away” here and is much cheaper, so I picked it up a couple of years ago. Long story short I love this game.
Thank you for the Information. That's odd, because "kula" is also a "sphere" or "ball" in polish. Given it's a swedish game it must be a lingual coicidence, nevertheless as a kid I found it intriguing. Edit: actually it originates from German, "keule/kūle"➡️German "Kugel"➡️ polish "Kula"➡️russian "Pula/Pulya".
@@yyy-ul3sb Makes sense. As the previous guy pointed out, years ago turns out, "marble world" is closer. Although Marble is refering to the material as well, which is "Marmor" in Swedish. "Kula" is hard to translate, I would just call it "Small spherical thing"
The reason why This is one of my favorite youtubers is highlighted perfectly by his final sentence and the final action you see the ball make in this video, and how he flawlessly he coordinated the two.
One of the coolest things about this video is how the ball’s state stays consistent between shots. If it ends a shot rolling, it’ll be rolling at the start of the next one. There’s even a cute moment at 9:14 where the ball falls in one shot and lands in the next. I wish I was able to say I noticed this for myself, but it was actually because Matthew mentioned this in the REmake video on the second channel. I’d very much recommend it if you haven’t yet given it a visit.
hi Matthew, just discovered your channel by accident in the past 48 hours (completed MGSV and was looking for some info on some plot issues) - thus far I've watched your Mario Series, Metal Gear Series, Zelda Series, Dark Souls and few other videos. please keep making content, your indepth stuff is really illuminating and has certainly made me consider things in some of my favourite videogames I otherwise missed (gameover screens in MGS2 for example)...and completely damned the Tasty Incarnation of Abes Oddysee
I do like these ball puzzle games, Koropina on the Wii was a fave of mine for years! But Kula World is mega expensive to pick up on disc now. :( Been after a copy for ages.
+Larry Bundy Jr It's been ported to Android and released on PSN, so those are always options if you just want to play it but don't want to mess with emulators.
P4INKiller I'm not sure if it's rare persay, but it's highly sought after! So goes for around £50/$80 on eBay at the moment. But you got to find those PS1 games, could be a few gems there! :)

Damn, this was one of my big childhood games, I can't even believe many other people even played it. To see a video on it? Utterly uncanny. I definitely agree with a lot of these points, although I haven't really consciously acknowledged a lot of this stuff.
I love your in-depth reviews! Seeing you fortunately reviewing some of my childhood games (including the fantastic Kula World) with so much thought put into it and critique remakes from even more childhood games such as Abes Oddysee or Wind Waker bringing up the points that bothered me with the remakes as well is so satisfying!
It seems like such a fun, charming, surreal creative game. Did you ever play Kula World alongside your parents, it seems like a fun game to play along with friends and family.
Oh my god. Matthew, I played this at a friend's when I was a kid and spent the following years looking for similar games in Flash form, and stuff like Super Monkey Ball (which is much less enticing). Finally I know its name, with your excellent analysis of why Kula World was so great. One thing I would add on the pause menu: I recall it reminding my dad of screensavers, which were all the rage in the late 90s for some reason. He had an extra computer in his office (he is a dentist) just running a screensaver, as it looked impressive to patients/customers. Kula World was especially approachable to non-games by lacking a 'theme' (which was seen as a geeky thing at the time, not sure about now), and its screenaver is one small example of that.
This review is kinda heartwarming, with the little anectodal beginning section, and then just the praise of this apparently carefully and very well constructed game, which swings back in the end to remind the viewer that sometimes you can find hidden gems which will give you joy for years to come, even if the reason you picked them up was strange or trivial.
I remember playing the demo and being blow away. This game had a very dreamlike feel to it and until now I just remembered it as that 3d beach ball game. Great game/level design
HOLY SHIT MATT I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER THE NAME OF THIS GAME!!! I ONLY EVER PLAYED IT ON A DEMO DISC BUT I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE NAME!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Good to see you back, m8. I'm glad you got to work on something small and quick that you enjoy and you're not slaving away over a 6+ hour behemoth of a video for months on end.
There used to be a Willy Wonka parody of this. It was SweetTart-themed and I loved it as a kid. There was a website full of Willy Wonka games and I played it all the time. I tried to find it again recently and it was nowhere to be found. I couldn't find it anywhere. I'm very glad I found this video!
The new RU-vid subscription blob had me missing this video. I only got to see it because I felt the need to check the channel for new stuff. Good video, good watch.
I remember playing a demo version of this game at my friend's house when we were young. The game popped up in my mind some days ago, so it's a funny coincidence that you decided to make a video of it.
Seeing even the shortest of Matthew videos is a gift, he could have done a video on anything and I would have watched If another series comes out I'll probably throw a party
For those who don't know, game is called Kula World in EU Roll Away in US and Kula Quest in Japan and the last one is most complete game with extra levels and FMV cutscenes.
I used to play a Willy Wonka ball rolling game that was just like this! It ran like trash on whatever old computer I was playing it on at the time, and there was only a few levels, but I would play it over and over again.
Just dropping in to thank you for this review on multiple levels. The game itself is one I loved as a kid, so getting to see someone elses thoughts was really refreshing. The review also made me more critically look at the game and your focus on the scoring system actually helped me with a massive roadblock in a game I'm working on in my spare time, how to make the scoring interesting, and a system inspired by Kula World actually turned out to be pretty interesting. So I figured I'd drop by and let you know that even a weird, spur of the moment review for an obscure, small title can have a meaningful impact. My game would be very different today if I hadn't watched this review. Crazy how inspiration can come from the weirdest places isn't it? Sincere thanks for putting out honest, interesting content. Cheers.
I finally found it. I remember seeing a gameplay video of this on a demo disc more than 20 years ago and thinking the graphics looked amazing. Good times.
I first played Kula World on one of the demo disks that came with the Official Playstation Magazine. I loved that game, along with Kurushi it was the best example of puzzle gaming on the PS1.
Good video as always, it did make me reflect on how some games don't get the appreciation they deserve, I'd never heard of that game if it wasn't for this video.
Yet another great video, Matthew. Nice work. I was really interested in picking Kula World up after watching this. Seeing as I don't have a Playstation, I was hoping to get it on the PSN Store for cheap. Unfortunately, it turns out it's only available on the European version of the store. Here's hoping that I can get it to run decently on an emulator.
Love this game. Played it alot a on a demo disc I had. Now I realize that I played it on my PSP. And wondered where my PSP are. I remember that I sold my PSP.....
If you like this kind of game I could also recommend English Country Tune. Doesn't have as unique of a scoring mechanic as Kula World, but it's got similar puzzle solving with some unique twists
