Great video! I'm a huge fan of Elric, Jerry Cornelius, von Bek, Corum and pretty much everything Moorcock has written (including his non-SFF literary work). I think you did a great job of highlighting how great the Elric stories are, while being fair and mentioning the small flaws (which I think are excusable flaws... it's not surprising that 20-year-old Moorcock writing the first pulpy Elric stories for magazines in the early 1960s feels very different than 80-year-old Moorcock writing Elric stuff in the 2020s). Thanks for highlighting my favorite author (who is also a super nice guy by the way)!

It's a shame that because it's a fantasy novel, whenever people do artwork depicting Elric, they always go utterly mental. They make Elric look totally over-the top. Completely whacky, with mad armour that's decorated all over the place. Yet for all that, nobody has ever (IMHO) got his face right. Most people just draw a man's face that's a bit brooding and 'aquiline'. But Elric wasn't a man, he was a Melnibonean. He had a graceful, tapering face with slanted eyes and (if I remember correctly) pointed ears. And he wasn't afraid of 'slumming it' as he went about on his travels with Moonglum across the Young Kingdoms. So all the mad armour would have been pointless. He would have worn much more utilitarian, functional, battle ready armour than all the artists portray. I'm just waiting for the film to come out. Hope they do a better job of the artwork than most people do!

Love this series. Elric is my all time favorite fictional character. I have several different editions on my bookshelf. A note on those Gallery Saga Press editions you mentioned: They're a good recommendation, and someone wanting to get into the series really only needs the first two volumes of that printing to get a complete version of the saga. The Elric Saga has 12 books at this point, but the order is wonky because the full story is pretty much already told in the first 6 books, then the 7th and 8th books (Fortress of the Pearl & Revenge of the Rose) fill in some gaps in the timeline of the first 6, and everything after that honestly kinda goes off the rails and mostly ignores the established continuity. But the Gallery Saga Press editions rearrange the order of the first 8 books to put books 7 & 8 back into their proper chronology. (Fortress becomes book 2 of volume 1 and Revenge becomes book 2 of volume 2.) So for a new reader, picking up volumes 1 & 2 of this new edition will provide the original 6-book saga in its entirety, plus two additional books of content, all without the timeline confusion of previous editions. It's very convenient.

Bought the first book in Kindle. I read the Dragonbone chair first and then jumped into Elric. Just finished the first book within the book, when he comes back from the void and gets Stormbringer. Pros: fast paced, perfectly sized chapters to devour, great characters and compelling stories. Cons: so far kind of over the top (even keeping in mind when it was written) moments and dialogue, it's not all the time but it keeps popping up. And there's like a constant cliffhanger of "but this will make sense" that I don't love, feels like I am reading a prequel. So far, so good. It's 680 pages in Kindle and I'm up to 230.

the opening to the updated books is a short story written by Neil Gaiman. If you are giving this series to a tween to read, the short story does bring up c s a. Read it first before deciding on what version you are going to recommend. The Great Book of Amber (The Chronicles of Amber/The Chaos Saga) by Roger Zelazny. Once the Elric series started to talk about Multi-Verses, it heavily reminded me of that series, to the point they could almost be set inside one another. Recommend reading them both in tandem.

Not sure why this has still at long last not been adapted as a series. The content is there, the vibe is there. The money to produce it is out there, and there are plenty of Witcher fans out there who probably don't love that Cavill is gone, so why no treat them to what that series takes inspiration from? The second novel The Sailor on the Seas of Fate is so odd and dreamlike I feel that it shares qualities of the excellent Hendrix album Electric Ladyland. I think it's that book that gives fantasy fans pause with regards to pursuing the original six novel story line to its conclusion.
