@@davidbartsch255- I intend to finish Way of Kings, I got about 20 hours into the audiobook but there was one thing that grated on me. I found the use of the term ‘Brightness’ so cringe “Yes brightness’ ‘No brightness’ ‘forgive me brightness’ etc. Then to make it worse there was ‘Storm you!’ ‘Storm off!’ ‘Storming man!’ ‘Stormfather!’ It all make me cringe so much it drove me insane & I had to take a break & listen to something else. As I say, I do intend to try again as I like very much how reliable Sanderson is & his output. It’s not that I don’t understand the use of the terms in context, they just grated on me big time.

“You have to be realistic”. I’ve read every book in The First Law universe several times and they never get stale. Joe Ambercrombie is an absolute master storyteller. The Audiobooks are outstanding. Steven Pacey is a treasure. Highest possible recommendation!

Have you read the Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne? I just started the second book yesterday, and it's been a wild ride! If you haven't heard of it, it's a four book series that perfectly blends classic and modern fantasy. There's a lot of classic tropes (chosen one, war between good and evil gods, etc.), but it's written in a fast-paced modern style. Malice, book 1, is slow to start, as it has to do a lot of setup, but around the half way mark, it starts moving like a highstorm 😂. John Gwynne writes action like he's John Wick. I haven't been so immersed in a fight scene since "The Sky and the Winds are mine." From everything I've heard, each book gets better, as Gwynne improves on his writing each time. If you haven't checked them out already, I can't recommend them enough, and I'd love to see a review of them!

I’m not sure why you would blatantly spoil the character arc for a main POV character. Kind of infuriating. Taking away a reader’s ability to digest the character development as the author intends is pretty criminal….

I’m currently reading the last book, jezal is probably the most entertaining to follow, glokta is funny but the other characters I don’t really care about. Tbh ferro is just there, she doesn’t really have any depth besides wanting revenge. I don’t like here personality much either, she’s just edge-lord all the time. One scene I liked from her was when she laughed. Logen has a similar motivation as well but with more depth because he is tired with ask the killing and he wants to change himself but I thought he was a little too mopey. Well see how I feel at the end

Hey! I just got into these! I hate his plots, but I LOVE his characters and conversations between them. Like goddamn the man can write a scene. And some of the best combat descriptions ever. It's a very fun read/listen. Steven Pacey is an incredible narrator.
@Ryuksgelus
@Ryuksgelus 10 месяцев назад
What plots? The important characters are awesome. The tertiary characters are cartoon level silly and shallow which feels jarring. The world(at least in the first trilogy) feels like the MCs and their important side characters exist as real people but then everybody else is a generic NPC based on some template. Like the two generals under the Marshall are just stern general and glory seeking pompous general with no further characterization then a ton of faceless rabble as their entourages. Maybe it's better in beyond the first trilogy.
@BrokenWingman
@BrokenWingman 10 месяцев назад
@@Ryuksgelus haha, yes, "what plots?" indeed. I'm on the final book of the 2nd trilogy. (not done yet) and there's no underlying large plot going on, not like you see in traditional fantasy/stories. It's all about the characters. The "magic" stuff is pretty much irrelevant aside from occasional brutal killings, and the one, very fun, anime fight in the 1st trilogy. Like I said, it's a lot of fun. There's great characters and really fun scenes. I listened to the audiobook though, and that adds a lot, because Steven Pacey is amazing.

Great video. I just finished listening to the audiobooks of all first law books. While I loved the first trilogy and the standalones I was very disappointed by the Age of Madness trilogy and the lack of The First of the Maegi. Feels like he was completely absent and changed from fearsome planner to oblivious bystander.... But you can never please everyone. You have to be realistic

I stuck on the first trilogy. I loved the 3rd ending book, but they were a bit too plotless for my taste :( Glokta made the trilogy for me. I loved Jezal's arc too. Dogman was pretty cool too. I will continue it one day but maybe not before I finish some other series I've started

@CapturedInWords
@CapturedInWords 9 месяцев назад
I never said he ends up not being a villain by book 3??? You can tell VERY early on that Glokta is one of the protagonists and not a villain. It was literally just in the first scene with him at the beginning of the book where I thought he could possibly be a villain. That doesn't spoil anything.

@@CapturedInWords The Curse of Chalion is the intro to that world. It's not really a series though, just common world. Paladin of Souls is next, that's her Hugo winner, then Hallowed Hunt. It's been at least a decade since I read them. All I remember is I enjoyed them. The sharing knife stories are completely separate with a different world. Not quite as high a peak as Paladin, but it is a real series. If you're into sci Fi, the back of all the vorkosigan books have a timeline in them. The stories are mostly stand alones, but following the timeline is probably best. One caveat, the main characters powers of persuasion are over the top.

Does it get any better after the first book? It totally could just be my own taste but I was incredibly bored by the first book. I have refused to keep going cause of it. This has happened before with other popular books so it very much could just be me. But boy it was disappointing.
@CapturedInWords
@CapturedInWords 10 месяцев назад
Book 1 is mostly focused on the characters and their development, so if you don't find the characters too interesting than you could be bored. Book 2 takes those characters and develops the plot much better (though these are still very character-driven books) and the plot in book 3 gets even better. But if the characters themselves aren't working for you then it might not be your taste. If you do like audio books, I'd recommend trying those to see if it's better for you, as I feel like I enjoy the audio books more
