Major congrats on what you accomplished in your year as an ALT with JET! I taught in Japan many years ago and was a professor of TESOL/TEFL here in the US and trained hundreds of teachers, many of whom went to teach in Japan, with some of those through JET. I appreciated hearing your very professional overview of what you experienced with JET in your own individual situation there. I know making this video took a great deal of time and effort, and I just wanted to say THANKS for making it and sharing it with others who might be considering JET. I know I'll share this link with any future students who are considering JET. 🙂

We've really enjoyed having you at our school, and I'm glad you had a good time with it too. I'm sorry to see you go, but I know if I was in your position I'd do the same. Don't forget to come visit!

Right. It was a hard decision but also a no brainer, given the circumstances and I’m happy I chose to do what I did :)

Is it better to be a part of the JET program or try to be hired by and independent language school?

I think it really depends on what you are looking to get out of the job. If you would like to come to Japan and travel and make new friends while working and making money in the country I definitely think JET is the way to go. If you are looking to stay in Japan long term and work as a teacher and be seen as a teacher then I think an independent language school would be the better option. There is a middle option too I guess. You could start out on JET and travel Japan and when you’ve had your fill you could always transition to a different job while you are here which is what I did. I knew I would be here long term but I thought jet program was the most likely and best way to get my foot in the door. And being on the program was a great experience and I ended up having a lot of fun, and experiencing a lot of new things.
