This is an amazing 1700s 1800s abandoned homesite that we worked so hard to find at the end of last year. We had found it in December with lots of researching and exploring but our first metal detecting dig there we had 6 inches of snow on the ground.
Fast forward here to spring 2019 and we are making the trip back and let me tell you it was one of the best detecting days ever. It started right out with signals all over the place at this cellar holes and the buttons started popping out of the ground. Digger Dame with his Garrett ATPRo detector dug the first button and then it didn't stop for over 6 hours. With my Garrett ATGOLD I worked one side of the cellar hole that had been caved in and managed to dig out around 20 old clothing buttons from the rocks and dirt. Dandy, Tombac, Flat, convex you name it we found it.
Waynos found many buttons himself but also found 3 cufflinks. Tim found a beautiful 1817 US large cent coin. There is no doubt this was a vitgin site with all the old coins and relics we dug up in one day. It was a record breaking button finding day with a total of 64 in total for the group. An amazing metal detecting day for us here in New Hampshire and one that will be hard to top.

Thank you for sharing your epic button bonanza lol and the other goodies that you all found. I love re-watching this one! The small ball buttons could also be from a ladies blouse. Those blouses were called “shirtwaists”, or at least they were called that in the late 1800’s. When a little girl “grew up”, (13 ish maybe?) her mom would stop making her dresses to wear, she graduated to a shirt waist and skirt-but the skirt didn’t reach the ground. They didn’t reach the ground until mom decreed it.😎

That hole Dame found could easily been a hole for ground storage of food to keep it fresh through the winter. Farmers or settlers would dig separate holes, 1 for each vegetable. So after digging the hole , they would line it with rocks then fresh hay. Then put in the lined pit either potatoes, onions, even apples. Then, they cover the mound with a combination of rocks, dirt, hay, and boards. Put up a makeshift door so no varmints can steal the food, and all winter you have fresh vegetables or fruits. By the end of a winter season, the foods would begin to get “mushy”-eatable but not great. Then, the summer comes and planting starts the process all over. Just a bit of trivia.😎

Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part because of the size. I did a little research and found next to nothing. What I did find is that Draft horses were also very large and were used during logging operations. That would make sense also.

Awesome hunt guys and an outstanding video, Charlie, congratulations! I have just recently discovered a similar site out in the woods here in PA that appears to be relatively untouched (except for being leveled by farming up through the 1930s) and is yielding a lot of buttons so far, but nothing to the extent of what you guys are getting yet. No trace at all of any foundation though, and I can't see anything but fields or pasture on the aerial photos from late 1930s. I just discovered this place about a month ago and with my AT Pro and NEL Thunder coil I've pulled out over a dozen flat and tomb buttons and one blowhole button, all in an area of probably about 70' X 70'. The buttons have been fairly deep maybe 6-10" on average but a few weren't quite as deep. The thing that really almost made me faint, though, was a 1790 4 Reales with Mexico City mint mark, in beautiful condition and not deep! I found a heavily corroded 1802 largie maybe 100 feet west, then a #2 crotal bell a little farther west, then a toasted largie, a slick 27 mm holed probably halfpence or maybe VA or VT copper (no way to ID it), and somewhat corroded 1866 Indian Head and I865 2 cent about 200 feet west... all of those were 3" or less deep. There was a tavern not too far away and a farm building or maybe two about exactly on that site, but the old 1850s maps are pretty inaccurate, so I don't know if I'm onto the tavern site itself. I have no clue if the foundation could simply be buried with the top of it maybe only a few inches deep, plowed over maybe in the 1870s or so. Need to try a little test digging if I can to see if I hit foundation stones, crockery, bottles, etc, but for now I just want to keep detecting and really go slow and try to grid and be patient like I've (gratefully) learned from you. Regarding the wealth of buttons, it's interesting to hear everyone's conjecture, and that's about all we can do is guess at this time. I'm no expert at all, but IMHO, while this family was heavily engaged in farming for their livelihood and survival, I don't think these buttons were worn during the actual hardest work of farming - clearing, plowing, cultivation, planting, animal husbandry and such. I think these dandy buttons & tombacs were on their Sunday best waistcoats etc. and the farming clothes would've had maybe wood or bone/horn buttons, dunno if they would've used any ceramics or glass or maybe lead for work clothes. I think most of the stuff you and I are finding was probably gilded especially those with intricate fancy patterns. My theory is that these were dropped randomly over time during family get togethers for holidays, outings to church on Sunday, other social gatherings at the house where kids would be playing, singing, dancing, etc. Life was harder then, so even going out in your best waistcoat with dandy buttons required getting on and off a horse or in and out of a carriage or sleigh, then probably having to fetch water or go to the outhouse or feed/milk animals while still dressed up from that outing. I've found 4 of the exact same button scattered pretty widely, so I think that's attrition from the same waistcoat over time with buttons being added as replacements for the lost ones. Some commenters had some morbid theories too, and I highly doubt that you and I are finding anything like that given the scatter pattern and depth.

Sometimes there are moments so astounding it can't be put into words. This was one of those moments for me watching you guys dig. It then began to make me want to ask questions. Why such a plethora of buttons in that one corner you were diggin' Charlie? Was it a wardrobe full of clothes and they burned? Was it a place where they kept spare buttons? Was there a reason for all the dandy buttons all over the place too? This certainly looks like the guy had money in spite of so many daughters. Maybe he spent all his money on button filled clothes for himself and his girls?! ha ha ha All I can say in the end is Ebenezer's place is amazing and I am so glad you guys found it.

I knew it from that snow vid. That place is a jackpot! Congrats guys! You deserve it from the time put in. And Dame's homework to discover Ebenezer had that many daughters, plus the number of buttons found so far, actually answers questions to my virgin site vid. That hot spot of buttons just inside the footprint of the home matches the same one we found. It had to have been the women's bedroom, or a sewing corner?

All of it really makes you wonder TB, those sidewalls caved in for sure and that alone is interesting.

With that many girls in his family you'd think someone would have learned how to sew the buttons on better so they wouldn't keep falling off all the time. 😂🤣😁😆

There was no cable back then...so a woman's clothes falling off was probably like pay per view 🤣🤣

One last thing: from what I’ve read about Colonial times and the 1800’s, your huge horseshoe was probably 1 of 2 possibilities: 1) the obvious first guess is a Clydesdale, but the 2) 2nd possibility is a Belgian horse. Those horses were here in the 1800’s at least, and wow, they are big, strong horses-especially valuable for farmers trying to plow inhospitable lands.😎

There must be some acidic soil on that site, most of the finds look pretty beat up! Great fun to watch though, thanks for sharing guys 👍
