Record levels of toxic air make Delhi world’s most polluted city

Imagine living in a city where pollution is so bad, doctors say simply breathing in the air is like smoking 10 cigarettes a day.

That is the reality in Delhi, where last year toxic air reached record levels, making it the world's most polluted city.
A few months ago, it got so bad that the government ordered people to stay at home.
India is home to 22 of the world's 30 most polluted cities, and more than 1.6 million people die from air-related illnesses every year.
So is the problem just too big to solve?
Mandakini Ghalot reports.

I took an autorickshaw ride once in the Aurangabad region. The ride took much longer than expected due to heavy traffic and the poor driver had to stop multiple times to cough out the irritants in his lungs. I gave him what water I had and advised him to go straight home or go straight to hospital. The air pollution there was really bad and the roads dusty.

I've been to A'bad too, several times, it's a complete sh*thole and very polluted. You'd think that the local government/corporation would provide those poor auto wallahs with some sort of face masks/pollution filters, but instead they do nothing, which is fairly typical unfortunately.

what can the farmers do besides burning their crop residue? need intensive rotational grazing with cattle mixed with grain farming. Look up regenerative agriculture.

Farmers must stop burning stubble. Mulching stubble into the soil will add nutrients to the soil as the mulch decays and it will also hold moisture in the soil. This will reduce input costs for farmers and raise yields while reducing pollution. The government should encourage farmer co-operatives to get mulching machines and go from farm to farm and mulch in the stubble to reduce pollution and increase farm incomes.

India is disgusting, I just got back and will never return. I am disgusted with how they treat the Ganges, and trash all the way up to their temples. I saw so many people just shitting by the river, I am seriously grossed out.

India is an extremely polluted country, I remember I went to Bangalore my lungs were burning breathing in, when I asked rickshaw they said this is the normal. Was so glad when I left Bangalore to the country side the air was so much better. Can’t imagine living in those conditions.
