Record high temperatures and record low snowfall has northern Minnesota in summer-like conditions in February. We're saving money on fuel and heat but there are serious consequences ahead. Here's what is keeping us up at night... #familyfarm, #cattlefarm, #farming, #beefcattle,

I've been watching the drainage tile trickle. Usually they would be froze for another month, and run full for a few days. I'm concerned too. The fruit trees are budding so I'm expecting a hard frost to end hope of apples this year. Under the cover of Dad's grain drill written with pencil were planting dates, and acres. Twice he planted oats in February. I do remember that in the late 60s. Once in the early 50s that was before me. Thank you Dave.

I can’t imagine planting in March, much less February.

@Rollinghillsfarmsmn I think we are two zones apart. Even so we get a brutal winter most years. It just starts later, and ends earlier.

In 1981 we didn't have snow until March. The highest January temperature recorded in the Twin Cities was in 1981at 59 degrees. This year was 57.

We are facing the same thing here in Iowa Dave. Our horses are shedding like crazy. There is no frost on the ground here. Daffodils are up here. Supposed to be in the 60’s next week. Unbelievable

Isn’t it crazy how plants and animals can forecast weather? Are you guys dry?

@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn , oh yeah. Severely so. The crops did amazingly well last fall. Except for the oats and the hay. We survived on sub soil moisture, but that is gone. We better be getting something to replace it or this year will be a disaster.

@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn Yes. I think so far we are at 10 inches of snow total. Not good!

You are correct to be concerned about drought has to do with the early warm temperatures more than even the winter snowfall impact as that runs off and moves away rather quickly to surface water reserve centers, however trans evaporation basically gets a couple months, Headstart over summer and decreasing soil moisture in 2012 we had this happen and it was absolutely devastatingthings are gonna come out of Dorsey and then get hit by killing frost. Again definite negative impact on grasses. They jump into the boot stage and stop growing right away.

Good Morning Dave.... We have a touch of snow on the ground up here and just enough cool nights to hold the frost in, -1 last night...I've been feeding in the pasture all winter which is something I've never been able to do before.....Let's just hope the Heavens open up in May and June or it's not going to be good🙏🤞🤞. Thanks Dave.

The bred cow/heifer market doesn't show people concerned about feed. There Alot of sale barns toping over $3k for bred animals.

I’m hoping the cold nights will keep the alfalfa from growing but we have daytime high 40’s ahead.

They’ve had some severe winners in the upper peninsula of Michigan in recent years, which always has been a kind of tenuous for Whitetail. Survival that far north with that deepest snow of course every hunter around blames wolves because they don’t get deer that’s a big issue in Michigan. We’ve got record high deer numbers down by me and we had a low deer harvest and all the hunters are complaining. I think we’ve got really lazy hunters, no blame anything that if they don’t get a deer
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn 6 месяцев назад
I’ve been hearing a lot about wolves in Wisconsin and the U.P. I’m not really concerned about deer because they’ve co-existed with wolves since the glaciers melted, but cows are a different story. We’re setting extra trail cameras this spring to see who’s out there.

I've got deer in ridiculous numbers on the rye,which is not as good as yours, and on the new hay field. As long as it rains this spring we'll be ok. If it doesn't I see emergency Sorghum Sudan planting for me.
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn

There will be tons of fawns this spring which will hopefully feed the wolves and keep them away from cattle. I’ve got backup oat seed for the same purpose.
