Great meeting you in line outside Better Days and glad I found your channel. I was successful in grabbing the Olivia Newton-John Physical picture disc…it was a great morning!
Byron! It’s always cool to meet someone there for something they have passion for… and not just getting the titles everyone else feels they need. It was nice to have an easy going group of people to pass the time with. Cheers!
I enjoyed this one, Bob ! Liked all of your picks, for me the Hendix release is my favorite..much like how I enjoy Jimi " Blues".. no vocals, and a killer " Born Under A Bad Sign" Wow !!! 🤘
Nice haul there Bob. I picked up a few things including The Doors and Townes Van Zandt. I had the Hendrix release from 2015 on black Vinyl. Now I wonder where this "Encore" series is going, if anywhere at all. Thanks for the smooth landing Col. Bob!!
Hey Bob - Better Days looks like a great store & it looked Ike 2019 again with the crowd. Named after a Kinks song ? My friend in Minneapolis had a store named Let It Be named in homage to The Replacements album not The Beatles but eventually lost his space to a higher bidder .. Target ! 🎯. I have to say that The Bowie , Prince & Hendrix estates are not tarnishing but indeed enhancing the artists reputations with quality releases. Good stuff Bob ✌️
I was stoked to see that Jaco remastered and put back out. I was lucky to find the Bernie mix for half off in new old stock buried under the racks at Lunchbox a few years ago. I spun the Tony Williams today. Loved the B Side. Killer LP. Solid day there good sir.
Nice Haul Bob! I picked up the Jazz Dispensary: Haunted High (I arrived about an hour after opening and I got lucky; I got the last one! It made my day); it's fantastic and did not disappoint. I also picked up the Fountains of Wayne - Traffic and Weather. I was looking for the Townes Van Zandt, but my local shop didn't have it...I'm in Canada so it's possible it's late. My personal "off my radar until about a week ago" RSD deep-homework-dive was picking up the The Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop. Wow! Amazing 2LP pressing from BG. Strikes me as some out there Zappa-esque jazz-funk or at the very least some 60s/70s jazz fusion / psychedelic rock. There's also a nice booklet that accompanies the release that I look forward to reading through so as to learn more about how this interesting recording came to be; brief internet browsing reveals it was released in 1970 via Ahmad Jamal’s AJP Records and I noticed current OG pressings have a median value of over $1000 buckaroos! Ok that's enough words from me. Happy RSD BF!
@@BOBBRADLEYCHANNEL Correction: I circled back to say this was 'originally' put out on Ahmad Jamal’s AJP Records but this set was done by Now-Again Records. The RSD site does a great summary, but basically, "Hoagy Bix Carmichael - son of legendary American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael - worked at Boston’s public radio station WGBH, he wanted to create a children’s program featuring his father’s music. He recruited Monty Stark (vibraphonist and co-composer), Phil Morrison (bassist), Carl Atkins (saxophonist), John Abercrombie (guitarist), and Vinnie Johnson (drummer) for this jazz fusion, reimagined work. After a few concerts and a failed California tour, the group disbanded. However, they released the album in 1970 via jazz musician Ahmad Jamal’s AJP Records. All to say, this release might not being everyone's 'cup of tea', but this is what I like about RSD; a fascinating release that was off of my radar that has a unique history, cool cover art and was pressed REALLY well. Both records came in MoFi styles sleeves for those that need that push over the edge ;)
Great video. I passed on this rsd had surgery on my neck because of an accident a couple weeks ago can't drive but if there were some must haves my great supportive wife said she would have gotten up at 4am with me & drive me. I overlooked the Tony Williams album which I'm gonna have to look for now.
Real nice haul. The one I got that surprised me the most was Gladys Knight and the Pips. It sounds incredible and the soulful Motown sound plays really nice.
Great finds, love the Jaco and of course Hendrix with that band is incredible. FYI, that Tony Williams came out around 1980 because I bought a copy around 1981-2 not knowing who was on it. It wasn't what I expected at that time but it was Tony Williams.
Hendrix was the only thing I picked up on RSD. Didn’t even have to get up early and stand in line…just strolled into my local that evening and snagged it!
What a great haul, Bob! The Hendrix was gone by the time I got to the racks (drat). I managed to pick up The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Townes Van Zandt, and Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. Also went crazy and picked up three non-RSD releases: Neil Young's World Record; Dr. John's Things Happen That Way; and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Live at the Fillmore (the 3-LP version). My ears are happy.
I passed on all of those and only grabbed the Ahmad Jamals, both of them. I really thought about the Jaco--and I may go back and see if I can score it. The cover alone is worth it.
Dude, I wish we had a record store that big near me. But sadly in NY the rent for square footage that huge would be like $30K/month. I never nailed one of those jazz dispensary LPs, but there's always next year LOL.
Thanks for the in depth reviews Bob, much appreciated. Please confirm if the Hendrix gatefold is a heavyweight/ premium tip-on style? Or just 'standard' cardstock? Thanks!
I actually made it to my store by 10:30. They still had a lot of stuff. My top pick was the Doors and the Jazz Dispensary. I got them both and really love them. This may be the best Jazz Disp. yet. I'll be 81 in a week so I'm trying to really cut back.
Didn't even know about the Tony Williams release. That sounds like a good one to look for to see if anyone still has copies. For the Doors, I suspect the full Albert King show will be released in the future. They did it officially on CD so I am betting a complete set will be dropped.
Aloha Bob, Congratulations❗ on getting all that you wanted this BLACK FRIDAY RSD . I too purchased the Jimi Hendrix and the doors LP's, I also bought Ted Nugent's lp, Eric Burdon and War , Jerry Garcia, & Grateful Dead box set's. Looking forward to watching your next video. Mahalo Ed
Bob, the Hendrix Burnin' Desire kicks it without a doubt!. Buddy mile's drumming is superb! And Jimi is just Jimi... Love it - and the sonic quality is far beyond what I was anticipating. Hippy holidays!
You got some really good stuff this time!! I slept in this record store Day..,LoL could not afford the grateful Dead box set so I just figured what the heck I just skipped the whole thing. Great video my friend
Hey Bob. Love the video. I don’t live anywhere near a record store. I’ve never been able to do the whole RSD ritual. Somehow watching your videos make me feel like I’m a part of it. I’ve been heading in the direction of audiophile pressings and NM OG’s more and more. Chad Kassem and the Tone Poet have been busy taking my money lately. To make matters worse, these pressings reveal the limitations of my stereo components. Now I’m shopping for a new stylist and phono preamp.
Adam, you are on the path! Keep doing what you are doing. Go slow and stop to smell the roses. Get new pieces of gear gradually and enjoy them. Glad you enjoy the videos, keep ‘em spinning 😃
Nice pick ups Bob! I picked up non RSD titles yesterday. Og copy of John Prine's Common Sense and the 2022 white vinyl reissue of Muddy Waters Electric Mud. Been on a Muddy kick lately!
I was lucky. I got the last copy of the Jazz Dispensary album at my record store. Attic Records in Pittsburgh usually has everything I want. I also got The Doors, Hendrix, Etta James, Hot Tuna & a couple of Motown albums. It's cool when you can get everything you want & then some. You've got me intrigued about that Jaco triple album. I bet it's awesome.
Really happy you got all your titles man! By my count you were 5th in line? But whoa 4:30am? That's commitment my friend. Psyched you picked up that Hendrix. Love your video intros!
I disagree, the Jazz Dispensary collection this year was not that great. The selections are just not that funky like past titles. Except for a few artists such as Mongo Santamaria, Barbra Louis, Canaonball, I would locate the originals for this collection.
Definitely more jazz, this year at least one spirals into big band Territory… but I’d say the tunes are still pretty funky but not funk if that makes any sense… cheers frank.
