Originally hosted on . Excess nitrogen and phosphorus in bodies of water can lead to Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), where the population of one or more species experiences a population boom. Such blooms are happening more often and in more places across the world. According to the US CDC, these blooms can harm people, animals, and the environment when they: -Produce toxins -Become too dense -Deplete the oxygen in the water -Release harmful gases,
Carson Roberts, Ph.D., Headwall Senior Applications Engineer, and Scott Gallager, Ph.D. of Coastal Ocean Vision present results from an ongoing study of cyanobacteria activity in Santuit Pond, Massachusetts, USA. Valuable simultaneous ground-truth measurements from a water-borne Raman spectroscopy instrument were gathered while an off-the-shelf turnkey Headwall lightweight UAV with an integrated VNIR hyperspectral imager and LiDAR was flown overhead, all tagged with very precise timing and GPS coordinates.
