These comments miss the point. It's not that anybody's saying that jail calls shouldn't be recorded by the facility, but Securus which is the company that provides jail calls literally stores all your data when you get a call from an inmate, including your current location. A sheriff used their portal to track his political opponents including a judge and other cops. They also publicize these calls which poses a danger to anyone who speaks to an inmate and infringes on their privacy. There are numerous YT channels with recorded jail calls being distributed to the public, including conversations between victims and defendants. They shouldnt be allowed to track your every move just because you pick up a telephone.

I was a juror in a murder trial, where a suspect who just shot his friend in the back of his head was making calls from prison to all of his ex-girlfriends looking for an alibi witness. Naturally, the police were listening to his calls... One of his ex-girlfriends was a nursing student and felt sorry for him. Apparently, he was telling her what to say if the police asked. If she had been prosecuted for perjury or helping a suspect escape, she could have been kicked out of school and lost everything. The police decided not to prosecute and confronted the suspect about the calls, which were later used against him in trial. So I strongly support recording prison inmates. There are cases where inmates have friends on the outside and have the witnesses against them intimidated or killed. However, perhaps there should be a recorded message every time an inmate picks up the phone and says that they could be recorded. I mean, every time I call Cox Communications or Capital One, they say my call could be recorded for quality assurance. Also, the idea that attorneys should be able to call their clients without being recorded makes perfect sense. The police can always get a court order if they think an attorney acting like a messenger.
