I absolutely loved this video. the engineer in the overall is my kinda guy. Knows how to answer a question. Really dig the studio as well. Seems like some great people run it.
@@Eric_In_SF The guy is explaining all the history and nuances of the studio for 10 minutes and setting up mics like you'd set up Lance Armstrong's handlebars and it's like naah this might as well be the back of a Krispy Kreme recording on a Walkman using the headphones as mics.
Yea bruv. And what. You think he was joking about 16 bit tape machines sounding rubbish, or is some sort of religious audio snob? Uh uh. Man's reasonable.
It is unusual for him to have ProTools going.. he himself didn't for this session (Taylor, the other engineer, ran the DAW). We asked for PT because 30 hours of improvised chaos would have been an expensive amount of tape to go through AND would have made it impossible to parse in time for mixing. The final picks were transferred to tape and mixed by Steve.
@@j1thegod dude is... one of the most respected engineers in the history of modern recorded music, but I guess you wouldn’t know that being so busy with your massive success
He’ll talk your ears off, though. Pretty cool if you know the guy and appreciate the technical side of stuff, I guess, but if you’re just there to record music I imagine at some point someone’s going ‘this geek won’t shut up’. And I LOVE him.
As iconic as he is...does Albini charge by the hour? I'd be like; "Thanks for all of the wisdom, but can we cut the yap-yap and get our record done please?"
Sounding awesome. Looking forward to the end results.

Why is there a DAW running on a computer in the control room? Was that the band’s choice to record to disk? AFAIK, Albini strongly prefers tape. Really curious about this!
They do anything the band wants, if they want to take the .vaw ttacks to somebody else to mix them. Steve doesn't handle the computer stuff but he's all about respecting the artist's wishes.

@@NONAMEACCESSIBLE I just wondered, bc in a later video they mix from tape, at EA. Maybe the band just wanted to archive the takes...
I could listen to Steve all day. With that being said, the minute or so I had to endure listening to that noise was too much. But hey, to each their own and I was glad these fellas took us along for the ride!
Yeah, with them saying they've played with each other on and off for 20 years, I at least expected to hear something that resembled musicality, but nah, just some dudes with money to spend.
Super cool video. I woulda been a kid in a candy store too with that pedal room. I feel like he made a good environment for sonic experiments to happen. Cool when ya'll played bass through a hiwatt lol that's an interesting trick.
Steve seems like such a cool and helpful guy for an engineer. And all that equipment and expertise in that studio man... Probably the best studio I know of in every aspect and I've never even been there.
Huge fan of Steve... But if this monlogue is burning through session time that's a no-no. I once lost 500 dollars watching an engineer tune drums for wayyy longer than I cared for. Maybe 5 hours of it.
the video is deceptive in how it was edited.. he wasn't just blathering on and on.. we were asking him questions and he was answering... a lot of the questions were technical (not shown) because we wanted to absorb as much of his wealth of knowledge that we could. he's very respectful and thoughtful regarding time... and, really, just in general.
@@BornThatGuy I can totally imagine it having been like that. I mean, who wouldn't ask a bunch of questions (may they be technical or regarding artistic concerns) while being at electrical audio and recording with Steve Albini. At least me personally would love to "waste" my precious studio time on asking Steve this & that. 😃
i love that he wears like a mechanic's jumpsuit, the music is much too noisy though, you can barely tell what the groove is supposed to be, maybe it's just the camera mic sucked
you don't know shit about albini. complaining about noise rock wtf? albini is a noise pioneer. and before you respond, let me proactively state "sorry you got offended".
Why are band members these days so feminen? Even when they wore makeup and literally dressed like women they could still kick your ass. These guys (besides Steve) couldn't close a fridge door if a doylie was hanging off the top. I just don't understand. It's starting to get embarrassing to tell people I play music because they are expecting a man bun and women's coconut scent.
