"A broken collarbone is a common injury. The collarbone, also known as the clavicle, connects the shoulder blade to the breastbone. Common causes of a broken collarbone include falls, sports and traffic accidents. Infants sometimes break their collarbones while being born." - The Mayo Clinic - mayoclinic.org
Symptoms of a broken collarbone include:
* Pain that increases when moving the shoulder.
* Swelling, tenderness or bruising.
* Skin over the break might look like a tent when gently pinched.
* A bump on or near the shoulder.
* A grinding or crackling sound when moving the shoulder.
* Stiffness or not being able to move the shoulder.
There's also those injuries where there is no break of the clavicle, but similar to above, swelling, tenderness, or bruising. No matter the outcome, Clavicle / Collar Bone injuries are among the most common that affect cyclists, no matter your chosen genre.
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist continues his recovery from a recent crash. Thankfully, his collarbone is not fractured, but there is extensive swelling around the clavicle / shoulder. Additionally, JOM is sporting lower back injuries and two fractured ribs. See how he gets along with his first ride, a week following his nasty crash.
We sincerely hope you find this information helpful, but it in no way is indicative of professional medical treatment. What is working for JOM, may not work for you, consider consulting a medical professional for your treatment plan.

Really enjoy your videos and learn a lot and keeps me motivated. Just started riding again in Jan - after long time off bikes - and it is tough getting the legs back at my age :-). At least here in FL (Sarasota area) I don't have to do very much climbing! Stay safe and get well!

Good on you getting out on the bike. I opted for a stationary bike a few days after surgery. I believe the blood flow aids in recovery. Get well 👍

I have my collarbone broken a few weeks ago, opted for operative treatment, back on the trainer the second week after the surgery. The pain went away pretty fast, still I feel stiffness and irritation from the hardware. Now is shortly after three weeks, just had my first outdoor ride yesterday. I felt good exactly riding on the bumps. Next week heading for a training camp. Probably lots of long ride but I am not going to stretch myself with intensity.

I still remember a crash I had in a 24 hour MTB race a few years back where the bike just swooshed out from under me and I did a Superman flying stunt and landed on a boulder which sent me to the hospital in the ambulance. The injuries was a cracked rib and something else internally which took me many months to overcome. I couldn't ride for about a month. Every time my breathing requirements ramped up I felt a hard pain that really worried me but I kept fighting and never stopped riding. I'm pretty good now but sometimes just sitting on the couch I get pain deep in my chest and it makes me wonder still years later just how much damage I did. I guess these types of injuries doctors are limited to how much they can do and most people recover fairly well.

Jom. From Oz. Love ya work and admire the fortitude, determination and the ibuprofen capacity! Feel no pain! Well, less! Many of us have had that collar bone/ ribs combo and it sure is testing. Go well as you mend the broken bits.

It was three weeks after my clavicle surgery when I was started going bonkers from not riding.

I'm now at about seven weeks post crash, I still have a lot of residual pain and garbage still in my shoulder and one rib. I will likely post another update video, but I 100% empathize with you. My very first clavicle break, I was off the bike six weeks after surgery. Talk about going berserk inside the house!!!

I broke four ribs 3 weeks ago. No cycling as yet. Pain is unreal, but subsiding. Will start soon with some safe loops on nearby paved Crit track to get my fitness back before venturing offroad again.

I feel your pain. I broke four at once many years ago, next level suffering as you know. I am still several weeks from being out of the woods with this current malady.

I don't know if I broke or bruised my rib a while back. I just remember it knocked the wind out of me when I crashed and it took a while to heal. I would wake up some days and think I was all good and then BAM! it was like getting punched in the ribs. When I googled what to do, the only advice I could find was basically if the bone isn't sticking out, then just wait it out. Feels fine now, but man was sleeping a challenge for a while.

Take it easy JOM. I had a cracked rib last year; ot tookme about 4 months to be completely pain free. Weired thing was that it wasn't hurting while riding the bike; it was only hurting while sitting on the couch.

I remember when I broke my shoulder about :20 years ago after crashing on some loose gravel whilst riding my mountain bike. My then wife was upset with me she saw me climbing back on the bike once the sling was removed.

good on you for getting back out there. I was under doctor's orders post crash to not ride for 6 weeks but that was more due to other items rather than the broken clavicle. Mine did not require surgery either. That first ride back made me very nervous. Heal up quick JOM.

I hate to state the obvious but there are two things at play here that are negatively impacting your enjoyable rides: 1. You ain't 16 any longer and crazy stunts should not be attempted. 2. Riding one handed on squirrelly surfaces may lead to mishaps.
