I’m always so surprised these easily spooked prey animals are just like “you can do whatever to my feet, most I’ll do is occasionally twitch”
@groovyflateric

@ To a degree, a lot of it is also training in the horse. When buying a horse, you should ask if they pick up their feet and stand for the farrier. Some horses have trauma, or sore legs/hooves or don't trust specific people and wont lift their hooves, but if you know what you're doing when you ask and the horse is trained, it's generally not a problem.

You did such a great job! I can tell you love your work. To anyone wondering: horse hooves are made up of keratin just like our hair and nails. Hot fitting it just like using a straitener on your hair. It doesn't hurt and they don't feel it. The only time they feel something is if you get into the tissue part of the foot like he showed.

A lot of people think it's hurts them, but a lot of those people don't know that a horse would have 0 problem letting you know that your ticking it off. Lol.

If you maybe want to try to keep the rain off the anvil, you can maybe find or make a drawstring cover with a water resistant fabric or even just a canvas that has been wet and sun-dried to shrink and then coated with water replant. Even a simple drawstring laundry sack may work once water proofed. It should be quick and easy to use. But, it is just an idea.

A few questions: 1) How long do you estimate it'll take for the hoofwall to grow back down fully? 2) How long does it usually take a shoe to cool down after you fire it? 3) Do you "sharpen"(?) your rasp/file, or do you have to continually get new ones as they wear down? He's such a good boy for having such a rough go around with his feet!
@jeremylinton8429

1. Every horse is different and Pinto is no exception. At this point he has been fighting his injury for a long long long time. I think it won’t be long before he gets even better, but he still needs a good two months before he will be in good shape. It’ll be even longer before his muscles start getting stronger again, this entire time he has been standing around in a stall. 2. It’s possible he waits for it to cool, but I doubt it. He probably just doesn’t have too long to wait and he might stick the shoes in water to quickly cook them enough to shoe the horse without continuously burning the horses hoof. Or there is a chance he uses oil. Not for sure about either of these as there is no evidence in the video itself. 3. Based on the structure and the nature of rasps/ files and how they work...I had a similar question on what he had to do....I am assuming he needs to purchase a new one every so often. A good question would be how long between the need to manage and maintain the rasp/file or if he has more than one.

If all goes well, no more proud flesh or karatoma growth it will be at least a year for the toe wall to grow out. This does vary from horse to horse and also depends on diet. A horses diet affects how much the foot grows. I have a horse that came out of California. She had super thin walls and a thin sole. She was originally a border but ended up staying permanently. My feeding regime is close to free choice quality Bermuda grass and a split of alfalfa for dinner. No supplements other than a basic salt block. Within 6 months her owner who is my farrier started to notice her walls thickening up. Hell she even put on some weight! All I did was feed her! Nutrition plays a huge part in getting good hoof growth. What would have taken this horse a year to produce she grew in 6 months. Again all I did was feed her enough hay! Now for cooling the shoe it’s done with a quick quench in water. Total cool down is about 2-3 minutes tops. And rasps are replaced frequently they do wear out fairly quickly. They are typically recycled along with worn out horseshoes. People are always looking for old shoes for art projects, they can be made into lots of things.

Found you through the suggestions after watching so much of The Hoof GP (a cow/bull hoof trimmer). It's great to see the differences in injuries and fixes. I look forward to seeing the anatomy better! I grew up with horses as a kid but never knew anything beyond going for a ride, washing and feeding so this is extremely informational! Thanks for sharing your work with us & great job! Best wishes from Aurora, Colorado (by way of Freer, Texas)!

I have a friend who’s a huge horse girl and we started a project where we read & review all her favorite horse books from childhood. Rescue horses are a huge theme in a lot of them and being pretty ignorant about horses it’s been a real learning curve trying to understand the different health issues they can have. These videos have helped me get a better understanding of how their feet actually work.

I just got interested in watching cow hoof trimming, and when a cow is lame they will put the cow up on a wood or rubber block (depending on whether they want it to wear down or not they use a different material). They used to attach these blocks with nails but now-a-days they clean up and scorch the area and then attach the blocks with hoof glue. Because you mentioned you don't really like nailing into an already compromised hoof, I was wondering if there's good examples of using rubber horse shoes with hoof glue to give some protection in situations like these. A google search showed me lots of new fancy rubber horseshoes, but I feel like your voice is more trustworthy than the words of a zillion marketing firms trying to sell something new.

I wish I had found this channel years ago. I had an Appy/POA/Mustang mix who was prone to thrush and foundering (he has since passed on). I helped my grandma take care of him. He did have somewhat regular farrier care because he wasn't shod, but I did clean his hooves. Problem was that he was really the first horse I ever cleaned hooves for, plus I couldn't get down there to clean them every day. I wish I had known that the frog isn't (or shouldn't be) sensitive, I could have given him so much better care and maybe stopped some thrush outbreaks.

Pinto Bean is a really well trained and handled horse, and he did let you know when it hurt without flattening you. And the care you have been taking with him is clear and obvious. But you are a RU-vidr now, so that explanation of hoof anatomy will be something you have to do nearly every video. I just find watching you comforting. Great job, farrier!

Practice makes perfect! Also make sure you have a strong core! Physical fitness, and flexibility goes a long way with this very demanding profession. Also people skills as your guaranteed to run into some clients you just wanna slap some sense into! The ones who refuse to have their animal ready for your arrival, or have difficult animals who need proper training but the owner refuses to see that their horse is a jerk who needs to be corrected! I have one of these! When she is done with whatever we are doing she will try to squish whoever is working on her. Previous owner ignored the issue, I do not! Anyway study hard and never stop learning! ELPO trimming protocol is pretty cool and is something I recommend looking into!

I had a horse who got an abscess and no amount of soaking or poulticing would get it drain. Had farrier out several times and he couldn’t get it to burst. Had vet out and he had the start of pedal Osteitis due to the abscess confirmed by radiographs. So we were sent to Auburn University and they were able to get it to pop after a nerve block, but didn’t perform the surgery as they felt it wasn’t warranted yet. Fast forward and the sub-solar abscess had turned into osteomyelitis, with a sequestrum... So, my vet performed the surgery and removed the bone and tissue along side my farrier who then built a straight bar shoe and attached a hospital plate. A month post surgery and (knock on wood), he’s almost walking sound and feeling much better. I enjoyed watching this because although he didn’t have a keratoma, we went through hell getting this fixed. Hope he continues to improve as well!😊

Excellent content Sheldon! Pinto Bean is in good hands. For your lay viewers and future customers when you're a Vet, avoid clinical terms like medial and lateral. They may not understand. Use inside and outside instead. Otherwise, well narrated. Good music. I've heard the hoof described as a person with long finger nails. You could drive a pin through the long part of the nail, or burn it with a hot iron and not feel anything. I'm from Southwestern Ohio, about 50 miles from Cincinnati .Hope you and your family are staying healthy.
