Recovery of 9/11 safe deposit box contents in the WTC's J.P. Morgan Chase vault
By Paul F. Renda
I'm a survivor of the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. On 9/11, my cousin Tommy Farino died at the World Trade Center. He was a New York Fire Department Captain, the youngest captain in Engine Company 26 history. MY FAMILY BURIED AN EMPTY COFFIN; THE DNA WAS COOKED OUT OF THE RECOVERED BONES.
The video that you are seeing has only been shown to about 25 people. I'm publishing it here now on RU-vid because it's really a historical document. I think young children can identify with the coins and stamps that were recovered.
My safety deposit box was located in the J.P. Morgan Chase vault. It was just below street level. Almost all the coins I recovered had horrific heat damage; the stamps were reduced to carbonized outlines. These stamps flew on the Challenger shuttle in 1984. My safe deposit box was in the main zone of destruction and was subjected to 1,800 degrees for 7-10 days. My coins went from MS65+ to VF in the time it took to dig them out.
J.P. Morgan Chase did offer me a settlement for my property. This settlement amounted to $2,000. Before 9/11, my estimate was that the coins were worth between $60,000 and $65,000. I didn't take the settlement; I was like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car. The settlement also contained the clause that you could not divulge any information about the recovery or what happened at the World Trade Center and the J.P. Morgan vault.
In a sense, I see the stamps as a historical document that flew on the ill-fated Challenger. They survived 9/11 as carbonized outlines. Maybe these stamps should reside in the Smithsonian Institute?
I have a link below to show you what the stamps look like.
www.mysticstamp.com/viewProducts.asp?sku.
I have donate some the coins and the unedited video of the recovery to several museums, including the Franklin Institute and the 9/11 Museum at the World Trade Center.
I've given some these coins as gifts. In the future, I might decide to sell some of them, but I am not sure at this point. In another link, I wrote some poetry, short stories, and hacker stories.
groundreport.com/profile/12431/
Follow the link below if you want to meet me. I will be giving a talk at the HOPE conference in July in New York City.
x.hope.net/
If you Google, my name Paul F. Renda, you will see some of the content that I created for hacker conferences. The Renda and Farino families thank you very much for reading this and viewing this video. MY PLEDGE THE FAMILIES THAT BURIED EMPTY COFFINS FOLLOWING 9/11 WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTON.

It's also an indication of molten steel which does not happen due to regular type fires or even a jet fuel fire! This happens at temperatures of above 3000° due to the use of nano thermite in the controlled demolition of the buildings!!

I worked at a bank in New Orleans during Katrina and had the job of taking people in to the flooded vault boxes to try to save what they could. I had one lady that opened her box and pulled out a baseball and started to cry. She had it in a case inside of a ziploc plastic bag that actually kept the water out. I asked her if it was important and she explained that it was a baseball signed by whole Yankees team in the 30’s including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrigs signatures too. A plastic ziploc bag saved her $thousands. I told every customer to use ziploc bags for the safe deposit contents for the rest of my career.

@@mikesmith4644 Yeah I already said to someone else in a different video, who didn't really understand how people were said to go back up after the first tower was struck, that I expected these towers to be an ecosystem on their own and a sudden mass of people pouring out of them could very well have cripled the surrounding areas. Having knowledge of the scriptures,I get much comfort from the scripture at John ch 5, Verses 28 and 29, it says there that in God's due time he will resurrect all those in the memorial tombs, The good and the bad, Good doesn't make promises without those promises being fulfilled, that prophecy will , without fail be fulfilled. I was in NY exactly one month before 9/11 and regret that I didn’t spend more time. The first words out of my mouth when we saw (on live television) that the second tower had been hit and it was not an accident was “how could anyone hate that much?” At the time I ran an Urgent Care Center that served as an extension of one of the larger ERs in our area. The ensuing weeks of bioterrorism training and the development of plans if my facility became a “dirty” facility, working with police and local officials to attempt to have plans in place even though the likelihood was extremely remote in our little corner of the country was something I never considered I would have to do in my lifetime. I witnessed amazing acts of kindness and comfort, and unfortunately I also witnessed physicians and medical staff stealing medical supplies and pharmaceuticals for their personal use, I saw large corporations that despite direction of leading first responders and community leaders would not put the simplest of procedures in place. It was a time when you truly saw what people were made of. The police presence and the idiot who wanted to burn the Koran, putting my own husband in danger as they wanted him to be part of the barricade separating this attention seeking fool from the public, reminding me of my very early years when my own father was a police officer during the Vietnam riots. Only if you’ve had someone you love place themselves in harms way every day, serve their community, can you understand the immense pride and great loss felt when those people are lost in the line of duty. When a loved one serves their whole family serves. I had the opportunity to be at the last launch before the Challenger. It was a night launch and it was honestly my most patriotic moment up until that time, I was never so proud to be an American. I was working at the Orlando-International airport on the day we lost the Challenger, just a sophomore in college. It was the first time in my life that I spent the entire day glued to the television watching the news, sadly it was not to be the last. Please know that the rest of the country has never, nor will we ever, forget the events of that day or the ensuing weeks. I still can’t think of it and not have tears in my eyes. Your family has given a great deal to our country and we are forever in your debt. There is a generation that has no idea what it was like to live through those days, months, and years and they were spared the jolt to their reality. Because of this they can make innocuous remarks, fail to see the sanctity of the situation, and speak with what appears to be disrespect. They simply don’t know what they don’t know and that is okay, may they never learn what we have. Thank you for sharing your story. Sending peace to your family and all of those impacted by this horrific act.

This reminds me of a fellow I was connected to on Facebook; he was actually a fairly well-known surf-rock musician and artist who retired to a mansion in the hills outside of Los Angeles. When the wildfires hit 6-7 years ago, his house was leveled, but to add insult to that loss, all of his belongings (original artworks, tapes from his career as a musician, other things that he was keeping but for which he hadn't made space in his house) were stored on his lot in two tractor-trailer sized storage containers. The flames didn't penetrate the containers, but the sustained heat from days of wildfires basically cooked every item in the containers and reduced them to ash. He died a few months after that, and I always felt that, between the loss of his house and those things that represented his earthly accomplishments, he simply died of a broken heart. In a way, what you retrieved may have more "value" in its state NOW than before this tragedy occurred. It tells us so much and in a way, it's a "survivor" of 9-11. Certainly its "value" now transcends any dollar amount, and could hardly be compared to any numismatic "worth" it had before 9-11. Anyway... it's not "just stuff" and thank you for sharing this.

I'm sorry to hear about your cousin, Tommy. What a shame. He seems like he is a very dedicated person to helping others, especially with doing that so young. It's quite mind blowing, actually, that he was that young being a captain. That's impressive! He was an Earth angel. May Tommy Farino rest in Heavenly Peace. He's still here in spirit, standing by and watching, and we will be with our lost loved ones in paradise to spend our eternity with them, so don't stress. No one deserves to lose someone this way, and then bury an empty casket. That pisses me off even more about what happened. I just read about the contents of the box. Holy shit. The Challenger???! Wow. Yes, they belong in a museum. They were involved in so much history. I know it hurts to lose so much value like that instantly, but to make it a LITTLE better, just know that you have something very historical and meaningful .Symbolical even. I believe that they should be worth even more because of that and what they've been through. Have you tried getting them in a museum yet? The story behind them is stunning! Bless you and your family, btw.

I realize it's technically not the banks fault your collection was badly damaged, but would think their insurance would have been able to offer an 'at par settlement' (face value prior to the fire damage) (I'm sure the lawyers added in a get out of it if a/b/c should happen clause). I can run that whole day in my head like it happened this morning. I’m a chef and was getting ready to be open for Lunch. My partner was a Marine. I had Howard Stern on and I’m prepping all that I need to open for Lunch and I the back ground I hear Stern talking about some small plane hit the WTC. I was like damn he’s got a sick sense of humor. Then I realize Gary is coming in giving these updates about people jumping out of the top floors because it’s that or burn alive! Stern started to cry. I’m like shit this is real. My partner live upstairs and he comes down did you hear what’s going on in NY? Told him what I heard. There is a toy store next to us and we knew they had a TV in the officer. We went over and walked in 15 seconds before the second plane hit. I said small plane my ass this is an attack. I saw the hole in the side of the North tower and said that was made by a jet. Stood there like everyone else just dumbfounded. Called my wife I said we are going to close today I’ll see you at home. I asked if she wanted me to pick up the baby from day care she said now I’ll get him. It would have been closer for me to get him at that time but I understood why she needed to get him. Called my parents. No answer they live in NJ. My pop, brother and myself are all firefighters. Couldn’t reach my brother either. Then heard the pentagon just got hit????!!! WTF is going on??? We met at home and just sat in shock the rest of the night. Neither of us cooked! Fed our son and got him to bed. Heard from mom and dad. They were ok. They live right across the bridge from Philly. If they were attacking us they are going for big cities. Then United 93 went down. My brother was fire chief at the time and he’s said I just can’t imagine losing half of the house!! I said we need to do something. Asked my brother you think your going to send up a crew? He says yeah but what do they need. He asked if I thought I might come up! Talked to my wife she said I know you gotta go. If your not a first responder it’s hard to understand. It’s like being on team. She said Jim your a chef go cook for them!! Called my brother and dad back and told them let’s take the dept van up there and set up a kitchen and cook for the first responders and volunteers. We too 2 big grills 6 propane tanks, we took brats, dogs, burgers all the condiments tomato’s, onions etc. cases of chips and we got bud and rolls donated from a great local bakery. We ended up taken 2 police officers up and they packed their SUVS. We were there for 5 days and the blessings we received back which wasn’t at all what we expected or looking for was just that look from our brothers and sisters that this is just what they needed. Made life long friends and family. I watch these stories and yes we have stories but nothing like these folks went through.

@Jon Seymour I would buy one for sure. No problem paying well above its weight in metal.

They are paying $150 to $200+ in MINT condition; rarity in mintage is another factor. No numismatist pays for burnt scrap. I dont care if they came from a war on the moon! What condition are they in?

The fact any of them were recovered from the WTC adds very little extra to their value...

When was the last time you heard of steel safety deposit boxes in a basement getting that hot from an office fire ? What can burn that hot in a steel and concrete building that's Fireproof ? Question everything that government tells us that's not the truth.

thank you for providing this video document as a matter of historical timeline - we have all witnessed the tragedy of 9/11/01 but many of us have not witnessed the unspoken tragedy revealed in depth by video documentaries such as yours - to witness and realize the damage done to the contents of your safety deposit box, knowing how well and secure the vault that it was in, was below street level, provides in depth visualization as to exactly how fierce the debris that fell upon it was and the extreme power of the inferno, that not even a bank safety deposit box vault could have survived when i had originally thought different

As I coin and stamp collector I can feel your pain. Perhaps those coins are now more valuable as relics of 9/11. They should go in a museum.

There is some danger of toxic and radio-active substances, they should provide more than rubber gloves and a mask for handling this stuff. There may also be a lot of evidence to support or contradict the presence of a bomb underneath the tower. These items now have a new value. Agree too about that very unhelpful woman, she is making it all worse for him I imagine.

Thank you for posting this Paul, I don't think these coins have lost any value because they are 9/11 artifacts, they capture a moment is history now.
