Thx so much! This is the best bear advice video I've seen. I'm driving/camping from Texas to Alaska with my dog, and am pretty nervous about the bear situation. This has been super informative and has calmed me down. I'm still wary, but at least now I feel empowered with some knowledge. Thx!!!

I would suggest carrying a small air horn to scare off a bear that comes to close. People I know off had great success with that.

That can definitely be helpful!

Thanks for all the sound, practical advice. I've got a bit of a bear phobia, so I would prefer not to see one. Watching the movie "Back Country" before camping in an area with a high concentration of bears probably wasn't a good idea, LOL. I heard something walking in the woods next to us about 11:30pm at night. Sat upright with my bear spray and decided I'd stay on guard all night. Finally when the critter noises started up again about an hour later, I figured we were ok. After watching numerous videos of bears walking in the woods since, as well as stumbling upon a video of a man walking through the woods, I realized it was probably human and not bear. Which has creeped me out more.

Thanks, Zafira! Yikes, yes, a person is way creepier than a bear in that case!!

How much do you worry about keeping your cook pot nearby? Are you only using it to boil water? If not, seems like a concern, or at least you'd have to wash it really well (but then the soap could leave residue)? I'm new to all this, so curious what your thoughts are?
@brisketchick

Lots of good points. I like that you went into what to do in the event of an attack. A lot of people seem to focus on how unlikely that is, but even knowing there's a small chance, I feel better having an idea of what I would do.

When I'm backpacking, my cook pot is just for water 90%+ of the time, but if I use it for anything else, I wash it before bedtime and rinse it well. So far, it hasn't been an issue. The only time I'm aware of an animal going for my dishes was when mice ate my spoon I had just licked clean. I also put my sponge in my bear canister just to have one less potential issue. Bear attacks are definitely incredibly rare, especially with black bears, but the risk is never zero, so it's good to know what to do! It's kind of like first aid. It's knowledge you hope to never need, but will be grateful to have if you ever do!

I have a small dog that I usually camp with, because I sleep very deeply and he barks at anything, so will wake me up. He does have a higher pitched barked though. If barking antagonizes bears, should I not bring him to bear country?
@WanderingSwitchback
@WanderingSwitchback Год назад
Hi Faith! I would probably consider not taking the pup in places where bears are especially known to enter campgrounds or campsites. There are some areas where bears aren't a big problem, even though they're in the area, but many areas of the Sierra, for example, have bears that are very comfortable entering campsites, and a higher-pitched barking dog may cause more trouble than he would solve, putting both of you at higher risk. You could always call the ranger station in the area ahead of time to find out what they would recommend as well.

Always carry a gun 10mm or bigger. Especially in grizzly country. Ive had to use mine and bear spray is a joke it kept coming after spraying it. Those bells and whistles are jokes

@@WanderingSwitchback . Yeah, and it was a black bear that's what threw me off they usually don't act like that. I sprayed it and it kept coming so I shot it twice in the head with my Glock 10mm and it landed at my feet

@@D-A-1776 unnecessary, the sound alone will scare them off. Theres no need to shoot them unless they keep coming.

Whoa, that's crazy! Definitely NOT typical black bear behavior.
