Thanks so much for the great question, Becky - and sorry about my delayed response! I would say that a gatekeeper is someone who can grant or withhold access to the people you are looking to interview or a research site more broadly. In my PhD research, I wanted to interview screenwriters, directors, and producers in film and TV. Some of the key gatekeepers I encountered were the agents of these people, along with trade unions, film institutes, and other industry organisations. As an industry outsider, I would not have been able to reach my interviewees without these intermediaries, because their contact details were not publicly available. I hope this helps!
