Great ideea to put the kid there, my dad had the same ideea when I was a kid and I stayed 6 month in hospital with legs broken ( even was a bike crash at very low speed 10 meter away from home, he just fall over me with the heavy bike, I got external fractures at legs ) All I want to say is even some situations don't seem dangerous at all, they can turn ugly in 1 second. Ride safe !
Yes,its the same category as Drymer. Pedelec vith just 250 W . Thats why I am thinking about exclusion of leaning. Its not a speed machine.Just relax, exercise and fun.
Hi Jesike. Thanks for opinion. I love people who always look on the bright side of life, and good luck with yours projects. Even craziest thing is better than just making a noise.
Hi, I think the hinged U-bar can be assembled with rigid lateral glazing and front windshield together and raise them both. So the egg cage gives just support and protection.
Hi Romy. You're right. Egg is designed for metropolitan traffic. I spent several years in London using a Brompton bike as the main mode of transport. With the ability to benefit from the bus lines and bicycle paths, I was in rush hour faster than cars and buses and freer and cheaper than the subway. Simple tubular construction, use of conventional bicycle parts and removable battery and seats as Passive Anti-theft protection will allow you to lock Egg on the street and leave it there overnight - maybe with more locks in most places :( . Thanks for your interest. Robert.
Congratulation! You are on the good way to find how to use brain. This your great idea is here repeatedly for more than one year despite my explanation. So, go on, one day you will get it faster, maybe in a month :] .
Hi Ken. Here are some answers. There is room just for one adult inside the Egg, but it seem interesting to develop some kind of lap child seat option. I already have optional modified rear rack for child seat low above rear wheel. All top of the Egg above U bar is possible to cover with transparent plastic rain cover, which is possible attach in 1 minute and it folds up with U bar during getting in and off. Width 90 cm, height 145 cm and length 210 cm. Its mixed construction from steel and aluminum tubes and fiberglass. Weight is horrible...45kg but will be reduced by using aluminum only and simplification or exclusion of leaning mechanism.Leaning is working - but I want it stable straight and intuitive in turns... Windshield is polycarbonate. I hope you will collect funds for your project - happy you have kickstarter. Good luck and thanks for interest. Robert
I like it. 1-How 'cheap' have you been able to keep it? 2-Any plans for commercial production, or selling in kit form? 3-I would have liked to see how the adult gets in and out of the cage. 4-I wish you had taken a video of your wife pedaling without the child on her lap so we can see the space between her knees and handlebars. and the angle of the seating position. 5-How do you adjust for different size riders/length of legs? I noticed how the u-shaped bar lifts up for rider to enter the cage, but in case of a side hit by a fast moving vehicle what about this bar breaking/ snapping and getting stuck into the rider and adding to the probably pretty horrible injury from the collision? If you could kindly give us some answers it would be great. Good job, all in all. Cheers, Iks'r
Hi Iks'r. Egg-how I call it now, will be in commercial production as soon as possible. Price of the basic frame will hopefully be under 2000 Euro. Possible customization -rear rack child seat, rain cover, transport containers, motorization etc. will add something to the price. Seat and back support is adjustable-just forward direction, handlebars are adjustable in both-height and forward direction. Frame, including U-bar will be from alu- profiles. So in case of the side hit it will bent. Egg is designed for urban commuting- in Europe is urban traffic speed limited mostly by 50 km/h. Also pedelec moto-speed is limited by 25 km/h. So driver cage will do a lot for you in case of flip over or light crash, but forget about immortality. Thanks for interest and comments, Robert
Cool project. I'm assuming the steering is your own design? Would be nice to know about the details. And the rear end looks like it's off another bike.. Was that off a recumbent?
Hi.Thanks for interest. The steering and tilting is my own experiment - not finished yet. I am building recently upgraded version of the EGG -alloy,better ergonomic, hub motor, integrated cargo box and no tilting. Tilting is nice idea but it was shown overcomplicated=heavy, and unpractical=bad directional stability is the price to pay for intuitive mechanical tilting. May be I am wrong - I am still trying to find solution. The rear end is from the child MTB. I hope my son will forgive me... :)
Hi Larry. Thanks for interest. Good point about the wiper-even manual one might be very helpful. No website for now. I will set up one for new improved tricycle when ready for presentation - hope January 2015.
Awesome, I live in Argentina and even tough I got problems (can not walk, confined to a wheel chair) with all lumbar vertebae I got enough strength to move a fix bycicle pedals for every day. The cover is increasing the "egg" weight and it will mean a problem for my wife, so I will no go for it. What will the FOB American port price. Thank you.
cool bike. I'm on my 2nd v rex and own a trek r200. acquired a GRR soon to be available for sale...LOVE THE egg. i live in Manhattan nyc. what type of metal/plastic is the cage made from? how is it fastened to the bike? what type of trike? thanks man really cool
Hi! The shell is from steel tubes and fiber glass - quite heavy solution :( . All the trike is build from old child bike :). Check the Schaefller bio hybrid concept- also cool one.
I realize you're just using the family for demonstration purposes, in reality I'd expect a child restraint seat with safety harness and helmet. otherwise very cool trike.
+nosuch thingasshould There are some problems with using a child as an air bag. Usually before the age of 4 they are too small, and by 9 or 10 they might be too big. So you have a fairly long term investment for only a 5 or 6 year use. This can be attenuated by adoption, however most agencies would not want to have their charges be used this way. On the plus side, younger kids can make great horns and older ones provide the power.
Use your child as a bumper , why didn't I think of that . We all need the Dutch cycle ways. It would just not be realistic to put this on the road . Car drivers are not careful as it is .
Safety for whom? the children are certainly NOT safe! no helmets. no restraints, no side cover. This is a good idea for an adult, but Not with passengers in it's present format.
parents.. are your kids giving you trouble , one really being a brat .. just use the new and improved handy dandy , might bumper kid product .. stick that little annoying sucker on the front as a bumper guard lol ! kid falls off front become instant road speed bump no extra charge .. order now , operators are standing by!!
Where is the advantage over a normal bike? Or don't you have any balance? I just see extra wind resistance and weight. Now if you lost the pedals, added batteries and an electric motor..........
Egg Tricycle My eyes are wide open, but you seem to have missed my point. What is the benefit of your design? I only see down sides. Harder to pedal due to more weight and wind resistance. To quote you, "It's not for your kind of people". What kind of people is it for?
Koito rob Hi Koito.Yours eyes are wide shut, and I am not here to explain you why. I dont want to change you or your point of view. Learn more and you will find upsides. Just dont rush-Harder to pedal= health for your lazy body, More weight=pedal hard, and it will balance your body fat you always carry with you,Wind resistance - aerodynamic benefits,Safety first-crash with EGG at 25km per hour and yours beloved F1 at 250 km per hour ,and you will see....may be not...think. Now something less philosophic - you stay dry in rain and carry more luggage if you need to, with electric assist it might be cheapest electromobile after yours F1 cars burn all the petrol in doughnuts. If you are worry about the speed-do you have experience from city traffic jams? And dont rush...
Koito rob Come on Koito. Dont take it personally. The mention about fat lazy bodies was directed on the state of health in civilization with reduced physical activities, not to you . Take it easy. Why references to F1-check your favorite videos. And about your genuine criticism- SAFETY FIRST- dont run over anyone!
