My father has red records of "Mr. Texas" part of Billy Graham's ministry. We kept my Dad's, my Mom's and my records in a brown box. It was made to hold 45 records. I have it still today and treasure it so much.
early 50s housewives kept very neat and tidy homes....the boxed sets were a blessing as they tucked away nicely in built in shelves commonly found in living rooms of the day....A far cry from the large clunky and heavy 78 rpms which were difficult to store.
FYI this size disks were also used at 8,16 and 33RPM. 8 RPM was used for ta!king books for the blind and 16RPM was also used for extended play music and books with music.33RPM was used for hi fidelity music in stereo in the sixties. Four full length songs per disk with whole albums could'v be squeezed onto two disks. I am a collector and I am always interested in the odd ones I have a few of those colored disks. The vinyl can be coloured with any color as it is normally fairly clear.. Not all 45RPM disks were made from vinyl. I have some that are brittle and thick like the old 78RPM ones were. They may be shellac or maybe a more brittle plastic
That Mario Lanza album has been in my house forever. The box was lost before I was born, but the records are still here. We used to pull them out every Christmas. My family was also from Philly.
The Lanza Christmas album was originally released in 1951- in all three speeds: a four disc "78" album set {DM-1649}; a 4 disc "45" box set {WDM-1649}, and as a 10 inch "33 1/3 Long Play" album {LM-155}. Apparently, RCA wanted to cover "all bases" with those who continued to buy "78's", and appeal to those who preferred "33" discs [they finally gave in after over a year of resisting the manufacture of "33's", and joined Columbia in releasing them, beginning in January 1950; Columbia, in turn, started to issue "45's" in January 1951].
just wanted to share that the Glenn Miller 78 you show here is from 1942...The sleeve advertising the "new 45 player" is from a later 78. Also as some early 1950s homes did not have 45 record players, these "boxed set 45s" were also sold in 78 heavy cardboard books as well. Thanks for your video.
Thank you for commenting! And also for watching! The Glenn Miller record shown here was an electrically reproduced (i.e. dubbed) reissue after the war. If you look very closely you can see on the label something about that. This was my first Glenn Miller 78 and I was saddened to learn that lol. However, later I stumbled on an original edition pressed from the master matrix stamper (i.e. not dubbed :) )
You can also tell if its a reissue by the label. Miller's original Victor issues were issued through 1944. By the end of 1945, RCA added their own name to the word "Victor" on the labels.
In Europe and North Africa there were 45s with 2 songs on each side. I had a 45 by Christophe I bought while in Morocco Was recorded in France by Vogue Disque AZ.
RCA Victor introduced "45 extended play" discs in 1952- which featured two tracks per side (other labels followed suit), and eliminated the original "box sets". "33 long play" albums were also released in two or three "45" discs with gatefold covers through 1957, at least. RCA's single "EP's" continued to be issued through the end of the 1950's, although other record companies continued to release theirs commercially through the 1960's {Capitol finally discontinued theirs around 1965}. Abridged juke box album "EP's"- including "33" versions- were available through the 1970's.
When RCA first started releasing "45's" in March 1949, they offered different shades of vinyl, according to what kind of music was featured on them. For instance, red vinyl, of course, was "Red Seal"; "Midnight Blue" was "Popular Classics"; green vinyl featured Country & Western sides; "Cerise" was Rhythm & Blues/Jazz; yellow vinyl was their line of "Bluebird" children's records, and so on.
You mentioned about not being able to play a complete song for copyright reasons. I'm sure you're one of the honest ones, however there are so many complete vinyl recording on RU-vid in their entirety that I'm sure you'd be welcomed playing complete vinyl songs like this. It’s an interesting point. I am 100% free of any copyright violations on RU-vid and I want to stay that way. RU-vid actually allows most music but they turn over monetization over to the owner which is fine for me in most cases.
In India, HMV & Columbia records were very popular. Records reproduced here didn't needed 45 rpm adapter although they were many with traditional 45 rpm record hole. I have few Hindi and Bengali 45 rpm records and many LPs. They are really amazing. I recommend you to try some...
The brittle sound is due to the player not the record. If the record was damaged from being an ex jukebox disc, there would be groove wear and extra background noise, not just sound brittle
The "Red Seal" red vinyl 45 was originally introduced in February 1949, at the time RCA officially introduced their "45" records- and players- in stores. There were seven color-coded kinds of vinyl records in their "inventory" {the first to be officially introduced was the green "country and western" issue of Eddy Arnold's "Texarkana Baby" in March 1949}.
Elvis's label was Sun Records. He recorded in several genre. They may have pressed some of his records in colored vinyl though I have never seen one. Colored records was not exclusive to RCA. I have many 45's ans33's in colored vinyl in all of the colors, some from the late sixties. The Beatles had albums out in the seventies that were red, white and blue though those collector ones were much more expensive to buy and were offered in standard black at regular prices. I have them both ways, black to play and color ones to collect
Get a good eliptical stylus such as those from Audio Technical, it does not have to be expensive (less than 80 bucks) but what a huge difference it will make to your 45s. That stylus you have will emphasize all the scratches.Get a nicer one where you can change the stylus, trust me it will be a revalation. My old AT110E used to play records so clearly even when they were scratched up. My father had a turntable with a stylus like yours and records always sounded bad on it, especially old beat up ones.
@@andrewscott1253 Its true...those red ceramic needles you can get 4 or $10 bucks on ebay! That shows you the quality! Its also so important to be able to adjust the weight of the tone arm to like 1.5 grams or it wears the record groves down if more! A better quality turntable will allow tone arm adjustments and installation of good needles!
When did RCA stop doing 45 rpm boxed sets such as the ones you showed? Apparently, they were no longer doing them when Elvis came around or else they would have made his like that. I suppose the single 45 record worked better in their marketing to kids and teens.
