I've had a lot of connections with Red Admirals throughout my life, it's my favourite butterfly, for one. When my great grandmother was on her deathbed she apparently also said that she will be resurrected as a Red Admiral. It was also the one and only butterfly I have ever seen dead. I love them

Watching this because I made friends with one haha. Showed up in the garden last Tuesday (a week ago to the day) and it's been visiting me most days since (approx. 6-8pm), playing with me. Sadly hasn't been landing on me much (I think it's because I'm usually covered in midge repellent, I live in the Scottish Highlands) but it buzzes and bops me, always sneaking up from behind. I feel really privileged (how many people get to say they made friends with a butterfly!?). Shame they don't last long, will lose my new pal very soon. :(

Here in Canada the butterfly bush has been identified as non native and not a useful or healthy choice of food for our native insects. Next time you have show native insects please show native flowers or shrubs. Buddleja davidii, also called summer lilac, butterfly-bush, or orange eye, is a species of flowering plant in the family Scrophulariaceae, native to Sichuan and Hubei provinces in central China, and also Japan. It is widely used as an ornamental plant, and many named varieties are in cultivation. The genus was named Buddleja after Reverend Adam Buddle, an English botanist. The species name davidii honors the French missionary and explorer in China, Father Armand David, who was the first European to report the shrub. It was found near Yichang by Dr Augustine Henry about 1887 and sent to St Petersburg. Another botanist-missionary in China, Jean-André Soulié, sent seed to the French nursery Vilmorin, and B. davidii entered commerce in the 1890s.

Great video. I don't know about Europe but budleia is invasive in the US and the larvae won't survive on it. There may be some good native alternatives.

There didn't seem to be much explanation as to how to ID them. Maybe some close up shots with wings fully open and then closed closed would have helped a bit. Sorry for being grumpy yesterday, lol.

How gets the color on the wings?
@LeaveCurious
@LeaveCurious 3 года назад
That's a great question... one I had to google! "When light hits the different layers of a butterfly wing, it is reflected numerous times. The combination of all these reflections causes the intense colors of many species. The same principle behind soap bubbles applies to butterfly wings." 🌿

@@LeaveCurious I believe there are certain keratin structures for each color analogous to the pixels on the screens.
