Near as in “close-by”. You say it wa a close-by miss, as opposed to distant miss. Near miss is acceptable, as is near hit (NearLY hit) close call etc etc.
Actually, it is called a near-miss. The bird strike didn't even jeopardise the manouvre as strike happened when R6 exited the move. Clickbait title with scant regard for what truly happened doesn't help.
I was over by the kite place & didn't hear a bang, but you can hear him calling in the bird strike just after 9:25 - was really worried when I saw them go into a holding pattern, but thank goodness Red 6 was ok - seeing the pictures of the canopy that was some amazing piloting to get back to Hawarden. Only the best!
Nice display. Glad Red 6 was OK. I'm old enough to remember when a Red Arrow hit a yacht mast during a display. That ended badly for the hawk and the pilot got a bit wet when he ejected over the sea.
17 May 1980 off Brighton sea front. Pilot (#2 of the Synchro pair) ejected while inverted at approximately 300'; Martin Baker to the rescue again. Mast height was 44' above sea level and was clipped 4" below its tip; the authorised minimum manoeuvre height was 35' at the time (subsequently raised to 100').
I was there and saw that! Didn’t even know the Reds were displaying that day, walked to the sea front and saw the Hawk crash into the sea, others told us the pilot had got out, we couldn’t imagine how.
I was in a chinook helicopter when it hit a bird. Loud bang, and an emergency landing. It was pretty scary when we didn’t know what was happening, and just saw fire engines coming towards us. I can only imagine how red 6 was feeling, particularly with some of the canopy missing. Thankfully everyone is ok.
Hey guys, I was standing/ talking to you yesterday at Rhyl I was wearing Red jumper ( Red arrows ) on and I've heard everything about bird strike and 7 aircraft have arrived safety back at scampton injured jet is still at Hawarden airport being fixed.
Totally pointless American style circus commentary that nobody can hear or understand and above all nobody listens too ! Just let the people watch - that’s what they’ve come for !
