Every summer I walk past half a dozen families of red-backed shrikes on my usual track.
At the start of breeding season, I notice the males first.
Later, I can hear the distinctive begging calls from the bushes. A clear sign that the young birds are nearby.
Red-backed shrikes are not very shy of people, and are easy to observe without leaving the path.
Red-Backed Shrike (Lanius collurio).
Recorded in August 2023.
The sound was recorded with a lightweight shotgun microphone.
