My compliments to the safety crew and the procedures they have in place. Boats, jet skis, divers. Signals from the participants that land in the water. Well thought out and thorough.
Most entries seem to plummet straight down with zero aerodynamic characteristics. Which is probably a good thing so the pilots can more easily jump clear of the wrecks slamming into the water. Many pilots have the good sense to bail from their doomed aircraft before they leave the launching ramp.
As an enthusiast in pretty much everything that flies, I love this competition. But you would think with the vast knowledge we now have there would be more amazing distances achieved. Clearly the whole point of the event is fun. And the designs being fun. But I am surprised that I haven't seen better distances. You see many competitors sacrificing imaginative fun designs and basically using hang gliders. And to be honest, I think hang gliders shouldn't be allowed on the grounds that they are not in the spirit of the competition.
Hi Ger, I can see that your really enjoying Portland life! Now, why are people in floats dumping them into the water? And I hope this was on that very warm 95 degree weekend.
I am glad they have cleaned up the river enough to do this, a lot of things have been thrown in there and some famous peoples wives have 'accidently' fallen in through the decades
FLUTAG. GR8 FUN FOR ALL ! WHILE watching, WE SPOTTED A TEAM WITH A 'COW' ATTACHED TO THERE WINGS ! ? OK. SOMEONE NEEDS TO ENLIGHTEN THEM.! IT'S 'PIGS' THAT FLY; NOT COWS; BUT FAIR PLAY FOR BEING ORIGINAL:. ANYWAY: COWS ARE MUCH HEAVIER. M~Dee'~*~ x
even whit a Britannica glider there is barely speed or hight to transform your total weight to speed to make you glide, if you cane glide the same distance as the height to the ground you stand on ,whit only pushing, its a miracle, its a scam, the record set was a build where the tail broke and launched him up again

Just tipping trash into the sea while muppets jump around isn’t particularly entertaining or impressive. Make it more about serious amateur home made distance flying.
You got some awesome footage! Hmm? I'm glad to see they were wearing helmets. I remember Polar Bear dips on January 1st. Perhaps helmets & wet suits would have been a good idea seeings as most the time 25-45 deg. was the temp. at that time. But ahh....where would the fun & exhilaration have been?
It's not the height, it's going off the end at 4mph. Most of these vehicles have wings, but you can't get lift on them with no air going over them. The ramp needs to be slightly sloped so the pushers can really give it some speed. You could push something off with no wings, shaped like a toaster, and it'll pretty much have the same effect.
