I have a similar device with a longer handle that we used over an open fire at our camp. It is cast aluminum. Still have it 55 years later and it still works great.

I thought aluminum cookware from that era had the problem that the aluminum leeches into the food and it's super bad for you?

@@sleezeadd That's why we have lined cans now. If you look at the inside of your soda can or canned goods, they have some sort of lining or coating. My friends don't believe me but if you cut open a soda can, they have a thin plastic coating on the inside. As for the pans, I have no idea but I would imagine that if the lining is gone, it would be a good idea to change them out.

I own this and have a tip for you........when doing greasy items, do not flip the pan. I use a rubber spatula and turn mine over by hand. And I love how it cooks. Also, you don't always need to clean in between uses, depending on what you cook. The grilled cheese for example, just take a paper towel while pan is still warm and just wipe it off. I find that the pan lasts much longer. Hope this helps.

I've had this for a couple months. One sandwich I make and really like is just a toasted sandwich with cheese and sliced meat, with no butter, just bread on dry. I use different types of breads sometimes I have to cut the ends off to make it fit. I love it. And it's easy to clean & if you open it all the way up, the pans will separate for easier cleaning (discovered that one by accident, it goes back together easily too)

I make this same sandwich too and I also skip the butter and substitute it for pickle spread, it's extremely tasty and filling but only 350 calories.

I remember using small cast iron versions of this you put in the fire while camping to make little round sandwiches. So many fond memories.
@michaeldonaldson7037
@michaeldonaldson7037 6 лет назад
Your grilled cheese sandwich cooked that way because of the odd way you put the cheese onto the sandwich before cooking. Some of the cheese was hangin' off the sides & that is why your sandwich turned out the way it did, all messy like that.

Tip: keep a thick damp dish cloth handy, and wipe the outside if it drips. That way you don't cook the grease onto the outside of the pan. But be careful: you don't want a thin cloth, because the damp will transfer the heat very quickly otherwise and burn you.

I got one for Christmas and used it for the first time today. Your review seems spot on. It's perfect for a grilled cheese or a small melt. It IS a bit flimsy, but my handle clasp stayed clipped the entire time. As long as you don't try to get ambitious with it, it's a useful little tool to have in the kitchen.
@dragon6irl

I got one of those for Christmas last year, I use it a lot. Even just today for grilled cheese. A year later and nothing has stuck on yet, a blast of hot water and it’s usually good. I’m happy with it, would recommend. I also like to cook eggs in it sometimes, makes it look funny and also perfect sandwich shape.

I love your review, I wanted to buy one of these and after watching your review I decided not to. Not that the review was negative, but the commercials make it seem so fast and easy, magical. You made it seem real. Just another gadget that I don't really want in my kitchen. It still takes time, I still have to clean it up, and it's small so it doesn't work for more than 1-2 servings of most things. Thank you for saving me $20!
@Freakinreviews
@Freakinreviews 6 лет назад
I think it's great for making grilled cheese sandwiches, but I don't think it's as versatile as the advertising indicates. I do use it for that single purpose a few times a month, but I'm not sure I would have dropped $20 for it for just that reason.

When you make a grilled cheese have the cheese slices placed squarely in the middle of the slice of bread. It prevents spillage and makes it melt cleaner in the sandwich when cut in-half.

I think the other issue with cooking a burger in it is that you kept the temperature low, to look after the non-stick. A burger would certainly normally be cooked at a much higher heat.

In india you can buy that kind of flip pan for 2$ or less and they are pretty durable as well. They are not nonstick but you can make them one just by just applying some butter on each side while cooking and they work just fine. Also you don't have to baby them and you can use them on gas or throw them on wood fire.

We bought one and used it (great) but the old way we cook burgers in a pinch is to tear aluminum big enough to make a try large enough two hamburgers and folding up the sides so that the grease doesn't run out in the oven. Twenty minutes at 350/400 and all the cleanup is throwing away the foil.

You need to cut Hotdogs when grilling for best flavor. Wieners or Franks they are made with mechanically separated poultry (from butchered bones) so although they are pre-cooked they must be cooked. Hotdogs are made from Beef or Pork and Beef they are pre-cooked they can be eaten cold as they are basically mini bologna .

Growing up as a kid we would go camping and had what I believe were called pie irons that this product is similar to. Similar but no where near as good. Cast iron plates to cook the sandwich or camp pies long sturdy handles leak proof and the locking clip could slide along the handles. Personally I kept the clip by the press part. You may wanna find something like that and compare the too. The pie iron can be used on a gas stove or I guess electric. Didn’t grow up with electric so not sure on that one but it would be nice to see how well a copper pan will do against a cast iron one

From a Service Plumbers point of view I cringed when you dripped meat grease into your sink. Please lay a few paper towels over your drain to protect your plumbing if anything. I use paper towels like I have stock in scott paper to wipe grease out of cookware before it ever gets to the sink. Cool review I would buy one just for grilled cheese because I put TOMATOES and pickles on mine and they're a bitch to flip with falling apart. Didn't the original red copper fry pan commercial show a peppermint still in the wrapper being melted and burnt and it wiped right out with a paper towel.

A plumber used to rent a room from me, and he used to tell me horror stories like that. If he sees this video, he'll surely remind me not to put grease down the drain again! Always good to hear from you.

They make these in cast iron, if I have to season the pan I am just going to use a cast iron one, they work like a charm and last longer than we will likely live.

Like the s'mores fries best. Other things seem too one-at-a-time - I can already feel the finger taps wanting theirs NOW, galdangit!Hey! - that brief *guitar riff* scene after opening the bag is way cool! James, thanks for another fine review and going through each possibility.

Definitely not for making a meal, but pretty good for a one-off sandwich. I think my teenagers will use this more than I will.

If the directions ask to season it you should handle it as a cast iron skillet... Only rinse with water and paper towel, NEVER soap

Try making a grilled tuna salad sandwich in it. Make tuna salad like you normally would. Then put butter on 2 slices of bread like you would for a grilled cheese sandwich. Put the tuna salad on the bread (like cheese on a grilled cheese sandwich) and cook it like a grilled cheese sandwich.

What season? You only applied vegetable oil.
@DiyNuke

Which he removes afterwards with dishsoap xD dont wash your pans with damn soap non stick will work perfectly as long as there is grease

That's just the word used for applying a sort of cured layer of oil in a pan. You're not supposed to need it on non-stick pans so I thought that was weird. Generally it's necessary for cast iron skillets.

@@arieldanielle23 Yeah... who the hell seasons nonstick? If you let fat "cure" on a nonstick surface all your going to do is ruin it. Food sticks like glue to poorly cured oil. And vegetable oil is not what you want to use for seasoning anyway. Its best to use natural animal fat, like rendered bacon fat or real lard, not that crap they sell these days with hydrogenated vegetable oils mixed in. I had my aunt do that to one of my nice nonstick pans using that crap spray on oils to make pancakes. The oil that never seen food sat on the surface of the pan till it polymerized and now its stuck tight and anything else that goes in the pan sticks to those spots like glue. Its slowly wearing off, but its a real pain since you cant scrub it off.

Do you know what seasoning a pan means? Did you expect him to whip out some oregano or something?

Thanks Coryn. And yeah the number of copper cookware products out there is getting a little out of hand. That bandwagon must be getting pretty full by now!

Freakin' Reviews lol. so true. the funny thing for me is that i live it Canada and i dont see all that much "copper" products. i only learn about them from RU-vid. i could probably go to our as seen on tv store and find a couple things but nothing close to what is available in the states. kinda sucks since there are alot of gadgets i would love to try. hoping for another vid soon. 😀

And I highly doubt it's "real" copper anyway. Copper prices are astronomical and to make anything like this for $20, clearly isn't using actual copper.

I just purchased one of these and I am super curious to see how it performs to my old cast iron pie iron. Way longer handle and they old the heat way way better. I only paid $4.99 for it so no big loss if it doesn't work. I think the preheating is not a bad idea because it is thin aluminum construction. While I haven't cooked on this yet I would say/recommend that you keep the cooking times to less than three minutes. Anything more I think the item being cooked will burn. I will provide an update once I use this $5 item. Being single I see lots of uses.

I love mine. Flimsy, yes. You have to pay attention. I would never cook anything greasy in it tho. Awfully messy. I didn't get a cook book but I have only used it for sandwiches.

I’ve always heard it’s not a good idea to drain grease down the sink - what I do instead, which may work here, is to soak up grease with paper towel(s)

You must have a lot of kitchen cabinets, or a huge pantry to store all of the gizmos, pots and pans, and counter top appliances you have reviewed.
