In an Interview R* said the trailers were captured from a base PS4, likely due to the Sony marketing deal. All the same there's some very nice graphical improvements compared to past R* titles
*More "likely due to" some good ol' honest wysiwyg marketing,* representing in-engine accuracy as much as possible to distance themselves from predatory/anti-consumerist AAA marketing, manage expectations, and be on-the-level with consumers about the real product on BASE consoles (even if these are just cutscenes). Does look good to me. Personally waiting for the intentionally delayed PC version (like GTA V) - unless it is an absolute masterpiece where I will reward devs with a second purchase on two platforms ("double dip" as they say).
It, funny because info about trailer's source comes from IGN, not Rockstar. I think that Digital Foundry's assumption is much more correct. Also look how most of the screens and footage are cutscenes, not actual gameplay. I doubt R* downplay here. Quite otherwise. RDR2 is dated game build with old GTAV tech and content pipelines. It was made a year or two ago. And the reason why release was pushed forward is to balance Take Two's profit graph. Because GTA:O was too profitable.
Kurt Mac that is all in real time, but that's not real gameplay. Yes a few gameplay clips were in there but they were in fancy camera angles and not a representation in how you will play the game.
ATW Tech - Alpha R2 Maybe in those gameplay instances yes but you weren't playing most of the gameplay like that in those fancy cinematic ways. Don't twist my words against me because what I said was crystal clear. Those fancy cinematic scenes are probably in the game yes and how the game will look BUT NOT a representation of the game's gameplay. That is still a mystery and what I wanted to see from a RDR2 trailer.
Needs way more particle and smoke effects for locked 30fps game. Consoles can handle it. The walking scene in the town looks flat animations are good but no dirt kicking up from the ground.
It won't be two years, but no matter how long I'll wait, that way I won't have to play the game with all of the limitations that console gamers have to put up with. Checkerboard rendered incoming on consoles.
kaleb Powell I don't know about most, but ask yourself why they may have a PS4, for one reason, Sony first-party games. No sane PC Gamer is going to play third party games on a console. It's just dumb. Third-party games on consoles look and perform like a bowl of oatmeal.
Looks gorgeous except for the rough texture filtering. Hopefully that'll get smoothed out because their is nothing more distracting in a game that's trying to show off landscapes.
its funny how mediocre graphical updates in games each generation is being considered raising the bar. LMAO ps4 or ps4pro, the difference is noticable, but minimal. stop hyping these horrible limited pcs. they are the reason why games cant handle 60 fps and 1080p int he first place. LMAO
I don’t think that the graphics are better than UC4 or HZD or GOW. Edit: Ok many intellectuals say that we should compare it to only open world games. So lets compare this with only HZD n AC origin. Both of them came last year n still look equal if not better than red dead 2. Also they didn’t take 6 years to make. So i will say i am not impressed by the trailer.
On the subject of character modeling, Not to be a stickler, but I found that gentleman bearing the bowler hat and red coat had a rather space-bending tie and shirt collar.
The gravel textures in that market place seemed straight outta ps3. Overall graphics are quiet subdued I must say. Expected a little more or at least at the level of uncharted 4.
I don't think the volumetric lighting is on par with that shown in the debut trailer. Also the particle effects and water simulation SEEM to have stepped down and have been taken a toll on by the limitation of hardware. Originally I didn't mind it if they were not going to release a PC version because I may play it on Pro, but now after watching the third trailer, I pretty much hope they will.
Great work, but i think that you didn't notice the new reflections system in the mud of the city scene, i mean, in GTA 5 there is some reflections on the water to pedestrians, but not in the floor when its raining, for example. i hope RDR2 will not use SSR system on their engine, i know they will do a better job than that, greetings.
A shame then than the Xbox One X has literally no good exclusive games. Pro is where it's at for the exclusives, just finished God of War what exclusives do you poor Xbox serfs have?
Probably the game looks graphically similar on PS4 Pro, but with PS4 Pro I can forget about all frame-rates problems that the game could have on the launch. Also, I suposse the game can run 1440p rescaled to 4K. I have a 2K monitor and using the new supersampling function I will see the game much better.
Derp Derp like that will happen pro and the x version will run almost the same with a few details dialled back on pro thats it. Both will be 4k upscalled at 30 so i doubt there will be much difference
In a previous trailer it specifically states it was captured on PS4 Pro I would imagine the same goes for this. For reference I believe it was the first RDR 2 trailer.
Can you link this trailer that has this, because i've looked all over.. Good thing i have both a Pro and One X to entertain my gaming curiosity. PSN:DeathDealer41 Gamertag:BloodOath77
Any other examples of an 'old' engine continuing to be used and updated the way R* keep using the RAGE engine? I would have thought with their budgets and long development timelines, they could afford to build new game engines with the very latest tech.
wikum3 Source in Portal 2 looks a lot better than HL2. That aside, studios rarely just make entirely new engines if they have a perfectly good one there. Most "big" upgrades to engines are incremental changes like the ones seen in RAGE (e.g. Frostbite 2 -> 3 was not a complete rewrite, and 3 is just an update to 2). Version numbers at this point don't matter (which is why EA dropped the numbers for Frostbite) because the technology is always going to be changing. The only justifications I would see for this are complete rewrites because of unmanageable or completely outdated code (e.g. Source -> Source 2), or marketing purposes to showcase a large update (e.g. Unity 4 -> 5). So technically, the current RAGE engine is the "new" engine because of the amount of updates to rendering in general that it recieved during RDR2's development. Wow, that was more than I expected to write.
wikum3 why waste more time and money when u can just rewrite some code to upgrade it hell even NaughtyDog does that now there still using there ps3 engine just upgraded
Sean Phillips It still looks better than any game out there .. Uncharted 4 is simply breath taking and that is an old game now. The facial animations, environments, textures, materials, hair, outshine most games..
Why are ppl complaining about not seeing gameplay footage? I mean come on! Rockstar are barely releasing trailers, and never was the ones to shove gameplay footage down our throat. Just be happy with what they provided us with so far, trailers, screenshots, and various news!!!
Rockstar will never remaster the game for PC or current consoles due to its troubled development. All we can do is wait until RPCS3 runs the game properly. It shall take less than a year if they keep improving the emulator at the current speed.
According to Tobias from the German magazine GameStar, who was on site at Rockstar and was presented the game for 45 minutes, only the base PS4 version was shown. So the trailer could also be base PS4.
The fog/rays and post processing in every daylight scene makes RDR2 look blurred/drab unrealistic.....I loved the crisp clear image, realistic bright sunny lighting in the first RDR(weather permitting). Have yet to see any crisp sunny lighting and desert footage. Also these trailers are just bad in general. Waiting for actual gameplay/physics/UI/weather/lighting footage. Usual in more depth on what new goodies this engine/game mechanics brings to the table. We can talk/speculate/read articles/view snapshots.....just isn't cutting it. Not one bit when it comes to gameplay.
1) The trailer shows mostly gameplay footage just with different camera perspective. 2) This footage is captured from vanilla ps4. See IGN videos for more info
Rockstar said that the shown material is from a Base level Ps4 and not Ps4 pro or Xbox one X they confirmed that to the journalists that saw the 40 min demo witch was also gameplay from a base level ps4.
Nah, I think it's more likely that the texture compromises come from VRAM and bandwidth limitations on whatever console is being used. If Rockstar is going super ambitious with this and the world is both massive but also filled with a lot of unique textures, that would easily be cause to pare texture quality back.
Well then, that explains the anisotropic filtering quality and lowish texture quality on the ground and other places. It's amazing that Rockstar has managed this on 5 year old hardware. This game is going to look absurd, especially on PC. Man, it's been a great time to be a game enthusiast these past two years.
Resolution mode, framerate mode and detail mode should be standard from here on out. We should have a choice as to how we want to play. No game should be without at least a framerate mode and resolution mode.
I'm not impressed. Not in a "hey, I'm an immature, jaded gamer" type of unimpressed..but, I just imagined Rockstar pushing fidelity more than what they've shown so far. It just looks like a more advanced version of RDR. An open world game that looks like a true generational leap is (that trailer from these guys is all in engine) Sucker Punch's "Ghost of Tsushima." Now that looked much more impressive, imo. What is killing the look for me is total lack of motion blur. I am a fan of it. It makes movement look realistic & cinematic. Without it, games look more "video game-y." The face models/shaders aren't really pushin' any envelopes either. Idk. I'm just not going "WOW" like I have with other upcoming games. The only trailer from RDR II that truly made me go WOW, was the first teaser trailer...it looked impressive. The game looks nice, but something about it isn't making me go WHOA. It's still gonna be a good game. And I bet seeing actual gameplay in motion will put all the visual tech in context more. I just wish they implimented motion/per-object motion blur.
I_Am_SamIII I know Sucker Punch's reveal trailer for Tsushima was in engine and not gameplay...but, I will present to you, the last few quick clips of the samurai throwing that smoke bomb and coming down with his katana onto that enemy IS gameplay...and all the tech that was shown minutes prior looked to be intact in those short burst clips, that looked like gameplay. Idk, Rockstar always has a distinct look...and I just thought they would bring it to another level...which, in a sense, that def have...but, in other area's, it looks kind of dated COMPARED to what other devs have achieved so far.
Abz247 Yeah, everything in that reveal trailer looked def a notch up...compared to this latest, some things did look like it got downgraded. And I'm not one of those trolls who go "DERR DOWNGRADE" to ruffle feathers..but, I'll call it as I see it...it does looks different. The first reveal had like this "CG" esque look to it, even though I know it wasn't CG but running on their RAGE engine. Idk.. this game is looking like a hit or miss in certain technical features. I just need to see latest gameplay. PLEASE impliment a high sample motion blur, Rockstar! 😎
PC and PS4 owner here ...sadly there is no pc release but hey that's what my PS4 is for ... glad I got it 2 weeks ago. Just hope it runs good on my PS4 slim 🤔
dani_i89 bro no sense getting any Xbox when I own PC and whatever you can play on your Xbox I can play on my PC except this game LoL ... Gears of war 4 is kinda dead on the PC side I see more Xbox players than PC people.
BrbZrk if you take into consideration that anywhere you look you can go, in this massive open world, It doesn’t look bad. God of war definitely looks fantastic. It’s rockstar, the game is finished, now they will polish it as much as these console’s can graphically handle with as much that will be going on in the game all at once.
Patrick Burke you aren’t looking at the bigger picture. You should here about some of the stuff ign was talking about in there 40 minute gameplay session. Gameplay over graphics bro. Plus they had to make it on both consoles. 4 if you count the pro and X, doing all the 4K optimization all at the same time. Rockstar seems to have been hard at work here. Have a little faith.
Patrick Burke oh, you mean games that use the same cut and paste props all over their "world" and full of invisible walls? Or Sony walking simulators and buggy controls?
It dependa on what u compare it with. Ive seen some people compare this games graphics to uncharted 4, which is stupid because thats not an open world game. This game looks fucking fantastic for being open world and ive read that this is rockstars biggest map yet
I hope the ragdoll and blood effects are as good if not better than the first game. I just loved shooting and terrorizing random people and seeing the blood splat everywhere. It never gets old.
It feels like GTA 5 graphics with a high res texture mods. I'm not saying the gameplay won't be great. But it looks last gen to me. I just expected better from rockstar graphically.
Looks very much like gta 5 very few improvements, you speak positive of the particles but it's completely missing the blackpowder gun smoke of the first game.
I'm glad they didn't use LA Noire style mocap face scanning. It looked weird then, it looks weird now. It's the one thing that's bothered me about Spider-Man cinematic scenes so far, but even in Infamous Second Son, I did get used to it and stopped caring.
Cavey Manta Horizon's in-game animations look much better than Red Dead 2 though. In fact, Horizon's in game animations, animation blending and the general responsiveness of the game is so good it feels next gen compared to other RPGs.
Yes well, the PS4/Pro and Xbox One S/X are all part of the same console generation, after all. Sometimes people have a difficult time remembering this. There's no leap in DX/Open GL/[insert API] between them, the base model and deluxe model run the same libraries, and all games' best case AI, physics, and world complexity are limited by needing to run on the base models. They are all part of the same AMD generation of graphics capabilities and visual effects.
Man god of war fanboys are ruining gaming, like come on RDR 2, looks good for what is promising, god of war feels more like a simulation and when you finish it it leaves you with a feeling of just watching a Mom and daddy son crysis drama movie. Just as Horizon zero dawn and The last of us they are more of a Simulation movie style "game".
+Digital Foundry - wasn't this confirmed as running on a base PS4 and that the trailer contains game-play too? At least according to IGN who had some hands on....
I'd take worse lighting for 60fps. Maybe not Switch bloom but stripped back. Controlling characters in action games is absolutely better at 60fps (more of a spectacle in turnbased games like FF9 which went from 15fps during combat to 60 during summons.)
5 years later and it barely at all looks better than GTAV? Not impressive. Graphically pretty 'meh' but that's not what decides the quality of the game, especially not a GTA game.
what i know is horizon zero dawn takes a dump and a long leak on these graphics, you hermits won't get to play this like no time ever, btw spiderman says hi you know a real open world game
ThatOneGuy likely coming to PC as well... not reason not to, current consoles are just basically outdated PCs... and rockstar doesn’t do exclusivity...
ThatOneGuy rockstar likes to double dip, theyll wait till some pc players cave and buy it on console then release it on pc so theyll buy it again and play it on their main platform
poor b8 m8 , very poor but if your legit when I feel sorry for because PC only has more exclusives and exclusive genres but we also got most of console exclusives thanks to emulators , even dead console games to correct term would be : consoles got no games
Jay F Man did yo mamma drop you on your head as a baby and last week? The PC has more games than any platform on the planet, and even better than that the developers themselves have once again hailed that the PC is the most important gaming platform. Consoles are for first-party games and that's their only drawing card, other than that they're cheap and weak.
There have been better looking open world games this generation but cutting edge visuals have never really been Rockstar’s thing. Don’t get me wrong, their games look great, but it’s their attention to detail that puts them in another class. Nobody does details better than Rockstar and RDR2 looks like it’s going to push things even further.
It's coming to PC and better just like GTA 5 did, only PC users will get 60fps+ and be able to mod it. I bet it's a timed exclusive to consoles, R* isn't going to want to lose all thise millions of sales on PC, GTA 5 sold a millions on PC, still selling well. R* as usual greedy bastards are hoping for double dippers, buy it on console, then say 6 months later console gamers with PC's will buy it again for their PC, just like GTA 5.
Psydrre Mate, the first one didn't come to PC because the code was a fucking mess. There is no reason to not release RDR2 on PC, unless Rockstar hates money.
I'm getting RDR2 on PS4 this year, but I'd rather play it the game at 1440p ultra setting 60+ FPS with mouse and keyboard. It's sad that we have to wait until next year for the definitive version.
Same I am not buying a console to play a few games releases I have many other games to play, I would like to play it but if they don't support me I don't see a reason to support them. I assume this is just a timed console exclusive thing like GTA V was if they release a PC version I will definitely buy it.
