+UNITDW It was at night with a distant lightning storm for me. I thought it was intentional on the game's part until I saw other peoples' videos of it.
God I hope they remaster this game so we can all play it on Next Gen. I've played this game so many times, but it's so great I would play it a 1000 times again. This particular sequence just shows why this game is Rockstar's crowning achievement
Idk about you guys but I like having the horse running during this segment. Gives it that feeling of fleeing from your past as reflected in the lyrics.
I’ll never forget this. I entered on a sort of foggy morning, right before sunrise. As I got over the hill into the open area the sun was starting to peak and clear up the draw distance. There was my first view of Mexico. As much as I love RDR2’s “Unshaken” and “That’s The Way It Is”, this moment was not surpassed for me. It is simply the most magical moment I’ve ever had in a video game. It was comparable to when I was on a military ship heading to a remote island in the East China Sea. That feeling of being far from home in a land you’ve never been is something all of us need to experience in our lives. This moment captured it.
This sequence explains the beauty and nature of Red Dead Redemption so well, that I get goosebumps everytime I watch/play the game. I mean, there are stellar scenes in the game where it makes you stop in its tracks. BUT this scene. This scene demands you keep moving in order to fully understand the notion/message of the game Truly a beautiful piece by Rockstar
This was by far the most memorable moment in gaming for me. I got chills once the song kicked in! I can never replay this game. My first playthrough was perfect and it'll never be better than the first time.
Even to this day and year of 2015, Red Dead Redemption still yet makes me awed by the graphics and beauty. Just Imagine a Remaster for Current Gen and PC platform. Rockstar, get to it please, trust me, this game would be well worth the remake.
I remember this moment and I wasn't sure what to do and I didn't want the music to stop playing so I just continued galloping on the horse. It was a beautiful moment that I'll never forget.
Far Away just hits different when you arrive with a beautiful orange sunset in the distance. I rode as hard as I could, for as long as I could when the song started playing. I WISH, I could experience it again for the first time. Chills. Nothing but chills.
I've now watched this video like 5 times at least. I'm realizing I can never get back that moment I experienced this for the first time. It was truly an immersive gaming experience. One of the best I've ever had while playing a video game. No words to describe how amazing that is.
If it happened to you in: Sunset: A Cowboy hero. Midnight: A Cowboy Anti-hero Day: A Mighty duelist Rain: The western Lonely soul. Sunrise: A romantic Adventurer *If you fell off the horse: Well... shame on you.*
When I first played this I was taken by surprise when music started playing. It was in the middle of the night which made so atmospheric. I do have to say that it was very creative and had an impact on me when playing the game.
I still remember this sequence the first time I played this 10 years ago, when I realized it was an entire song narrating my journey to the next checkpoint I was so dumbstruck at how awesome it was
A friend of mine told me when I got this game "OH MY GOD YOU HAVE TO STAY ON YOUR HORSE WHEN YOU GET TO MEXICO AND RIDE AROUND LISTENING TO THE SONG!" Being told about it completely ruined the experience for me after I wasn't really enjoying the game anyway.
My response the first time I played this game: "Singing? What the... that's cheesy as fuck. ... Why are the hairs on my arm standing up? Holy shit. This is amazing."
Okay so SPOILER ALERT for anyone who hasn't played Days Gone. I played this song when I was taking Boozman to Iron Mike's and I got the same feeling that RDR gave me in Days Gone.
I just got the game last week, glorious, and this song is actually one of the main reasons I bought it. I remember hearing it live from the VGAs but when I borrowed it from a friend a few years ago it didn't hold my attention and I never got very far...Anyway, it was the afternoon when I was going down the raft and night fell by the end. "Pushing forward through the night" was extremely fitting, I ruined the song about half way though by wrangling a black stallion that I thought was the 3 star one lol
It wasn't played on my second playthrough today. What the fuck?! I was waiting for it to play. The reason I'm watching this video is to check up if my memory was correct.
I was just thinking, can't wait til im older and pull out my old dusty xbox 360 and play this, gta iv, la noire, skyrim etc. all over again with my kids!
Everyone saying how they had this moment during a sunset, that sounds awesome too but for me this happened at night in the middle of the pouring rain and I felt like it was absolutely perfect
A friend i'm making play through the game got off his horse to kill and skin a deer for achievement purposes. He didn't do the mission again. At least you're not that friend.
@@KobaAM over all its a better moment in the story, but this is just far better thematically with the game and just wild west in general, both this and compass
Each one of these kind of scenes are amazing in both games, but for me the ones from RDR2 were far more emotional ("That's the way it is" in particular).
Nope, there's no cougars in Mexico in the game. There's bobcats but pretty sure they only attack when you're on foot and even then it's extremely rare, they usually just make a noise and run away. Only danger from animals at this point would be if there was a pack of wolves and you were riding very slowly and not bothering to avoid them.
I played this scene three hours after us kids had been told our Dad had been diagnosed with stage 4, and it was night and raining both in the game and outside. I finished the scene, put the controller down and bawled. My Dad lasted a year after his diagnosis, and passed away on Father's Day. I'll never forget this scene.
petr cechurself But instead of Mexico DLC or even a completed New Austin. Still a great game, but I guess story DLC isn’t worth it for them. Here’s hoping for some Sadie Adler story content in the future.
@@SeekTheCross I love RDR2, I was always checking to see if any leaks about a new red dead came out even years before RDR2 was announced. RDO is a disgrace and disappointment, at least the single player is amazing.
+Mario Lovegood well, I can't say I know how that felt with the horse in the water, but i accidentally f*cked up the moment by riding to El Presidio, where a bounty was put on my head XD
+PencilChest Jack Absolutely. I would too. This is one of those scenes that just sticks with you, even long after you've put the game away. The look on John's face of, "You're just gonna leave me here," coupled with the amazing version of the song...it's one of those rare moments in a video game where everything comes together in a scene that's easily as good as anything in any movie you'd find today.
So... this is the scene critics, players, and gaming journalists went crazy for. They all praise this scene for being perfect. LOL of course it is. I played it too. The very first time I played this game and this scene popped up I didn't go between that wall I took the high ground and I went towards the edge overlooking Mexico and that part of the song "its so far, so far away" hit right on the spot as I approached the cliff to get a great view of Mexico. Damn, I'll never forget that.
The definition of atmospheric gaming. You can't manufacture moments like this. You can't hire a bunch of programmers and tell them to sit down and make magic. It takes talent, it takes a character you care about, it takes a setting you feel apart of. Rockstar are the kings of this sort of thing. Think about the first time you used Bullet Time in Max Payne. The first time you got behind the wheel of a car and tinkered with the radio in GTA 3 (or, for me, getting on a Faggio and blasting "I Ran"). Rockstar has hit so many emotional home runs, but this was a fucking grand slam. You can use the word "epic" to describe it and not feel like you're overusing the word.
Rockstar- THE KINGS of the industry. What a risk it was to make a western game (an almost non-existent genre), and to give it such love and attention, al the while remaining fully commuted to their vision. And as a result they created one of the most original, detailed, and fun games ever.
As a Mexican I really enjoyed this moment. I entered in my country at night and I ride very slow, until the song was gone. This moment and Ezio and Federico talking about how great their lives were, are my favorite moments at playing videogames. So yes, I could say they can be art.
same, also got lucky and accidentally timed it perfectly so that the song played right as the sun was setting bathing everything in a low red light. Was amazing and so scenic that I assumed everyone got that same experience. Watching this guy getting the song and just galloping his horse randomly through the middle of the day is just jarring.
Danny Seaton 10 more days left it's gonna be great ! I'm British so I have " GAME " who I online pre ordered from . Enjoy the game mate , know I will !!
been a gamer for 20 years, and i will forever say that this exact moment is the most perfect moment in gaming history. the melancholy song, John's journey behind him, the journey ahead, his hopes for his life and his family, his fears for them too. nothing ever created can perfectly explain a fictional man and his story as well as these 5 minutes. not Aeris' Theme as she is killed. not Leliana's Song as she finally opens up. not even To Zanakand that plays even through battles when the group reach the fabled ruins. no, John Marsten's character and story is perfectly encapsulated by a 3 minute song, and the emotion, i believe, will NEVER be topped.
You know, I really, REALLY loved TW3, and while I do like her song, I couldn't help but feel it was out of place, as in I liked the song, just not in TW3. Just my opinion.
Been a gamer for 19 years. I didn't remember this moment at all til I read about it. And I'm a huge fan of videogame music, going as far as playing a game for the soundtrack alone. I guess I'm in the minority who didn't get the most mindblowing moment here. Not saying it's bad either, I just didn't find it that impactful I guess
The first time I played this section, it was the middle of the in-game night. It was really haunting, rounding a butte on horseback listening to this song. I ended up slowing down to a trot just so I could absorb the ambiance. And some people say that games can't be art. :P
Why does everyone who uploads this scene ruin the atmosphere of the moment by riding at breakneck speed instead of slowly trotting along the road, completely destroying the amazing visual of the mexican landscape slowly opening up in front of you while this soothing melody is playing?
exactly, you should trot up the road to the top of the nearest rock (on the left), slowly gazing at the sun, horizon, and wonder how the simplicity of an experience like this doesn't translate in our modern-day lives.
+Wurzelknecht I loved it when it came on, I was slowly plodding along getting the feel of the scenery when the song came on, while I was riding if you watch the character (John) he is actually eatting a jerky whilst riding along while the song is playing, loved it and such a surreal moment of the game.
Showing them this will not do anything unfortunately. You honestly had to have been there playing the game. Putting in all that time building John up from scratch from nothing. Completing all those missions. Seeing Mexico on the map but never being able to cross over into it. And then that moment when you start that mission and you realize that raft is crossing. You already get excited and can't wait to see the new landscapes. Then you start your journey to explore and out of no where that song starts and all the planets align. Anyone just watching this video who never played the game just sees a guy riding a horse to music. To those of us who played the game... well it was an epic moment and put shiver down your spine.
Same, BUT The song "Compass" played after I defeated the main antagonist. That was a perfect moment and I suddenly came to realization that I had been playing one of the best games ever made.
SiLVER Idk something about Wild west setting that I think everyone like it somehow. Some like bandits, some like marshals. We all love shootouts) I loved how in RDR in the beginning of the mach there was like mexican standoff. Really missed it, hope RDR 2 will bring memories in 2x format)
i came back here to have the feels of nostalgia but i dont even think i can make it through this with out getting teary this game has such a special place in my heart. for certin readons this game got me through some shit when i was younget... it sounds cliché but this game holds such a special place and rises above every game i have ever played
Red Dead Redemption is an art, not just a game for little kids to play instead of going outside. I'm glad you feel this way for games because we're running out of this in games. My teacher tried to tell me that games are only codes that are point less. I did not say anything because I knew she could not even understand what a good game is, i'd play this game night, and day if PS3 where almost out dated, and don't feel bad if a tear falls from your eye, that means you love that genere of games and that's a good thing to have.
And paint is nothing but pigmented liquid on a canvas. And literature is nothing but dried ink on a page. And music is just sounds that happen. I couldn't take that teacher serious if his or her view were that limited. Games like Red Dead are something special because of the feeling you have from playing and the interpretation you adhere from the story. Scenes like above are the reason why this medium is so relevant to learn from in today's society.
That’s how I feel for RDR2, my life is pretty shit right now. I have no friends in school and I’m depressed. But that game has really helped me ever since the gameplay trailer came.
uh, top 15, maybe. Great timing and beautiful song notwithstanding, a LOT of people miss out on this moment. John's final showdown was/is the moment that touches you as a player.
Mom's Spaghetti being newer doesn’t mean it’ll be better. RDR2 is better than RDR1 not because of the graphics. It’s better because writing, characters and soundtrack are incredible.
I like reading the comments and seeing how we all had different experiences when we first entered Mexico. Some arrived in the day, some at sunset, some at night, some in the rain, very cool how even with the dynamic setting, we all still got a great experience from it.
cuzthechicksdigit For me, I started early morning just before sunrise. After missing the opportunity to capture Bill on the night raid, he escaped to Mexico. In frustration on my way to the border, you could see the sky starting to brighten up from dusk to dawn. I rode as fast as possible so as not to lose his trail. As I made my way into Mexico, I was taken back by the scenery of the open land and of the plateau in the distance where the sun was starting to rise on that somewhat cloudy morning. That visual display was made more euphoric with that beautiful acoustic melody as I guided John Marshton on his horse through Mexico in hopes of finding the man we were looking for.
+cuzthechicksdigit I was just talking about this yesterday with my friend. I got lucky and the sun was setting when I rode into Mexico when this glorious music started. I walked so slowly that the song ended before I reached the checkpoint. I felt such a transcendental euphoria in that moment that it's been etched into my brain even though it's been years. I didn't even realize my experience was unique to me (sun setting) at the time! RDR is such an amazing game.
0:17 So when he says "Off I go to greener pastures" he probably means somewhere near Rhodes.. When Arthur and Charles finally get to Clemens Point an achievement is unlocked called "To Greener Pastures". Rockstar still surprises us with these small little details!
To my recollection, this was the most unexpectedly immersive experience in a video game that completely caught me off guard. I remember playing this for the first time. One second, you’re shooting your way through enemies same as usual, next you’re feeling incredibly attached to the game’s main character and story in a way anyone would feel playing this scene for the first time, unknowing of what’s to come. Especially if you’re playing alone.
One of the best moments in gaming history... Everything about this scene is just amazing: The song, the environment,... But the best part is that it's not scripted... And that is the reason why Rockstar is one of the best developer company out there. They can create a particular emotional scene where the player doesn't have the feeling that he's on rails. During this scene, you can literally go anywhere you want, slow down or even stop to admire the vue and yet the game will still be able to provide the same intensity of emotion... This is the proof that you don't need heavily scripted sequences like in recently critically acclaimed games to provide emotions... In short, it's the combination of absolute freedom and emotionality that makes this scene very unique. Thank you Rockstar for this amazing moment... A lot of developers could learn from you...
Mix that with a first person view and the oculus rift and virtuix omni, and you're practically in the game, feeling the enviroment, being so emotional as you say....
At 1:11 I went too fast around the bend and my horse ran into the rock on the left which caused it to go straight into the water killing me and spawning me at the little house and I couldn’t reload it because it auto saves when you die so I didn’t get to hear the whole song and experience what everybody else in the comments experienced FML
so about 10 year ago STONED out of my face on great canabis and 5 in the morning and I get hit with the this tune and the sun is coming up what a moment.
Same the sun had just begun rising in game for me when this scene took place and it’s burned into my memory as the most beautiful in game transition of all time for me personally
I tried explaining this moment to a friend and he just didn't understand. He was playing through the second without playing this one. He was excited about Guarma. I told him about how Mexico just gave this such a different feel after you have been playing the game for so long. It's amazing!!
The amount of people coming here just to bash this moment and praise the 2nd one's gave me a big LOL. Seriously, each game has their own moments, you can't compare them just because one is the prequel to the other.
I don’t remember hearing this song as I entered Mexico that’s because I hopped off my horse to pick a flower and never heard it. Now I want to start over.
It starts to kinda hit deep in the feels watching this scene after playing RDR2 and thinking about how Arthur's dying wish was for John and his family to get away from all this. And this scene just resonates how John gets pulled back into it. How awesome would it be though if they remasted RDR1 and the included a few audio flashback Arthur lines from the last interaction John had with Arthur into this moment
One of the best things I've ever seen in a game. When this happened in my game the sun was setting, I thought it was all scripted. Great game, great song.
I thought this entire sequence with the song was scripted. When I started riding, it was middle of the day but suddenly started raining a lot. I thought everyone had the same entrance to Mexico, to John going so far for his family.
