When a former professor of mine and his team went to study those cuties during the 90's, one of his colleagues got attacked and pulled further down by four of them simultaniously. He saved himself by reacting quickly and releasing compressed air right at them, which scared them off. In 2009 this guy got invited by my professor to tell us about his experiences as a marine biologist and he showed us his left lower arm, where he got injured the worst. That squid actually bit such a huge junk out of his arm that the doctors had to replace it with a piece from his calf. As someone who's slightly thalassophobic, that's pretty much the worst situation I could think of. On the other hand, being able to show the scars you got from an underwater fistfight against a bunch of man-eating squids is probably worth the risk. :

I went on a night dive in the Florida Keys once, with just a flashlight and the usual scuba equipment. After seeing a few different creatures like a pair of small squids, I eventually came across a green moray eel in its crevice. I remember it being pretty big too. As soon as I saw it in the flashlight’s beam, the eel looked agitated and started to swim out the entrance. So I calmly turned the light away from from the eel’s face and backed away, while it swam past me and slid into a different hiding spot. After we went back up, the guide said that she herself was feeling tense for a moment, until she saw that I was treating the eel correctly, giving the fish its space, and not provoking it into an altercation. During my daytime dives, I did see lots of other creatures like huge lobsters, parrotfish, barracudas, anemones, a decent-sized shark, and so on. But that night dive was the highlight for me.

That's a really big alpha. I never thought there was a pecking order among the Humboldts until I was sourounded by several dozen very big boys and one super monstrous alpha squid. The other squid seemed to cue in on the alphas behavior. They hung back away from me not approaching but still zipping about the water a measured distance behind the alpha. When he suddenly charged forward to investigate me every one of the others charged at me too. I pissed my suit instantly and had to pinch my ass cheeks together to stop from shitting myself too. But the big alpha swam around me almost gently, probing my body with his tentacles but not aggressively. The other squid likewise remained non aggressive. However, every now and then one of the other squid would get aggressive or impatient or whatever and charge at me ready to seemingly attack my ass. But when they did the big squid would bluff charge them and trigger a dog pile by the many other squid on the aggressor almost as if they were getting punished for poor behavior. I'll NEVER forget that day. I was terrified. I don't think I'll ever dive that area again. The squid just seemed way too intelligent and the pack mentality was scary and very evident. Once the super big alpha squid swam away all the other squid followed its lead and disappeared along with it into the inky black depths. I was never so relieved in all my life!

Only a white person would put himself in danger then get excited to get bitten smh

The animal just seemed to be mildly annoyed ,didn't struggle that much and swimed away without any haste when released. Interesting interaction.

I think he bit him because the squid didn't like being held. The bite was a method of communication.

That’s terrifying. But also, I’ve eaten enough squids in my life that if one wanted to eat me I think that’d be fair turnabout.

Considering squids are avid cannibals, they'd probably be quite understanding.

"In distress" 🤣 They aren't hurting the squid you muppet, if they HAD hurt it the squid would've probably taken one of their fingers off, that's why the divers are literally wearing CHAINMAIL DIVING SUITS...

@@elylewwrong. What prey is it confusing at that moment? Their color changes with stress at times
