Here is a close up review and demo of my 1991 EBMM Van Halen in Red. This guitar has served me well and it plays and sounds fantastic after all these years. Lots of memories with this guitar!
Thanks! Yeh, I never would have suspected it would face been so collectible. I just loved the way they looked and drooled over the photos. And of course Eddie was the man!
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker What is that top Marty ? Is it curly maple, or maybe flame maple or what ? Thanks, it really is gorgeous. Don't worry about the minor scratches and dents, that is called character
I believe that a guitar with blemishes shows that it has lived and if it’s still being played it has been loved. It didn’t spend its life sheltered in a case. Guitars are meant to be played, keep rockin man, she’s a beauty.
316 sounds so authentic on that guitar…there definitely was a 90,s EVH sound. Especially with a little chorus on it. Some people really bash on that EVH sound ? I don’t think Eddy ever had a bad sound, just different. Still love those first signature models 🎸
Agree! Ed's sounds was very different in the 90's & extremely unique - extremely Edward. All the while... you just new it was Eddie. Marty nails the tone. And yeah - with this axe... finishing touch!
Great video Marty, I wish I'd bought one in 1991 when I was 23 but at £1300 they were too much money back then. Bought a 1994 Amber one late last year for £5500 as needed to complete my collection. I also have a Peavey Wolf USA in sunburst. Love it as much as the EBMM. It's a better built guitar and looks stunning too. I have previously owned two of the cheaper Korean Peavey Wolgang specials. Loving the channel. Keep up the good work 🤘🎸
Thanks! Glad you finally completed your collection! The EBMM are a bit fragile I feel. Easy to ding up. The Wolfgang’s are built like tanks. I appreciate the compliment man and your support! 😎🥂
I had a Peavey Wolfgang Patent Pending. Felt similar. But the Peavey had a rounded top and was a bit more comfy. But the pickups were kind of harsher but not terrible. I only have played an EVH Wolfgang WG and it too is similar, but again … pickups are totally different. The EBMM sounds like For Unlawful and Balsnce. Total Poundcake. The Peavey and EVH are more metal sounding and compressed. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, just different. EBMM neck is in a class of its own. It feels kind of small but it feels worn in and plays so easy.
Awesome, Marty. I love the story behind it - as much as the guitar. I was also 22 in 1992. Well - at the end of 92. And heck - back then $1,200 bucks might as well have been $10 grand! It's still a piece of change. But back then.... wowsers! So cool you were able to pull it off, and that you still have it. It's a pretty guitar. That red color was my fave in that series. You definitely made the right decision by not buying furniture or food. And man - that baby sounds gooooood! Stone in Love.... one of my all-time favorite songs. And Def Lep Hysteria another all timer for me. Man.... everything you seem to do resonates with me. We're Soul Bros I think. We need to forma a Band called Soul Bros. I won't even plug in. You do all the hard work - and I'll just act like I'm killing it!! LOL You stand out front. I'll be the chubby hubby off to the side. 😂
lol love the band idea. 😂. Glad it resonated with you dude. I seriously found this in the classified adds of the Tennessean. Wrote the guy a check. Had to wait 5 days before I could buy groceries. Glad I had half a tank of gas in my 85 RX7 so I could make it to work. Lol. And I had Corn Flakes and milk so I was good. Hahaha
Who cares about the damn things and chings you had a badass guitar you bought it with your own money which I respect a lot and you did it as a kid and you played it live and played it in bands just like Eddie would have want you to.
Thanks Darren, I appreciate the compliment. (I was really winging it but glad I didn’t come off like a total hack. lol) thanks for checking out the video! 😎🤟🏻
Nope. I misspoke. It was in the classified ads in the back of the Tennessean! Lol. Found it in my lunch break. Had been searching for a few months and there it showed up. Like divine intervention.
Just a Friedman Sim in a fractal ax8. The. Chorus and delay added in pro tools in post. Thank you BTW. I have slightly worked in the gain structure in the BE Sim and using a Celestion 4 x 12 IR as well. (Fractal Ax8)
Man that is one hell of a beautiful guitar and trust me I know how it feels to deplete your bank account for a guitar but you've had it all these years and I know it's been well worth it it holds a lot of sentimental value to you
Thank you Kenneth! I feel like this guitar is part of me now. I could never part with it. Too many memories man, when you have them so long and bond with them!
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker man when you have a guitar that long it's like a body part you can't let it go it's like cutting off a foot or your hand it's impossible I have couple of guitars that I've had for a while now and honestly I couldn't imagine life without them
True. I meant the Tennessean classified ads. Our Nashville Newspaper. Back then that’s how we found the deals. They actually had sections for musical gear. Especially in Nashville. I got lucky!
Beauty!! How does the EBMM neck compare to the new EVH stripped Frankie series? I had two of the EBMMs back when they first came out, but traded them off in a never ending adventure of buying/trading guitars. Still kick myself for letting those go LOL!

It is very clean Marty! Beautiful instrument, real deal. I'm very glad that you purchased and played it back in the day and it did not ended in some collector's closet.
I was going to buy a first generation,it had a birds eye maple fret board..sooo beautiful and he only wanted a 1 thousand.. couldn't afford it ugggg.great presentation
For some reason Eddie & this Ernie ball deal just didn’t work out and they were talking about 18 months for delivery time for these guitars and there was some accounting issues so Eddie moved on from Ernie.
True man! Scary thing is I had some gear stolen a few years ago and they left this guitar behind. But took a Les Paul studio and an Epiphone. I am very grateful.
It’s not the fanciest looking guitar anything like that but it’s comfortable it’s well balanced and it’s fantastic to play I mean it’s a pretty boring looking guitar if that makes any sense
Van Halen wanted these guitars jam slammed and rock and roll all the time if you were going to collect it great but you can still get great money if you were to sell it not meant but almost meant you can get for it I know the man would have been happy to know that you put a lot of blood sweat over the years and your own hard-earned money that guitar is got a lot of your history
No I’m afraid I misspoke. It was in the classified ads in the back of the Tennessean newspaper. I found it on a lunch break and called that night. Purchased the next day. Dude drove to my apt 40 miles and brought it to me! Ahh the trusting 90’s era.
I find the sound a little too shrieky, and considering to change the pickups. I wonder if Gibson burstbucker or Bare Knuckle VHII or Holy Diver pickups would sound smoother.
@@vaultchris4203 kept the originals. Holy Diver as the bridge pickup is less shrieky; but the VHII as the neck pickup is muffled sounding-through thr VIP-1 amp. It turned out to be a compromise. The new setup sounds great through the 5150 iconic combo that I tried in the store.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker It's obvious your a good player was hoping there was a chance to see you/ your band.I'm from Northern Illinois so the miles? Love your song lessons I'm a beginner in my 50s so to another generation X'r keep it Extreme.
@@davidbartch8917 thanks! I occasionally do metal tribute shows in Nashville. That’s the most common thing lately. I do get frequent side work but it’s mostly fill in work with other show bands or niche band that need a guy for the night. The money is better and don’t have to travel far which is nice.
True. I misspoke it was listed in the tiny classified ads in the back of the Tennessean newspaper. I found it on my lunch break, called the Dude. He drove it to my apt. 40 mile drive next day. I wrote him a check even. The trusting 90’s. Lol
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker i had a similar story, sold my 74 mocha strat in 85 and rode it 2 miles with one hand on a 10 speed bike. but i cant remember the where i advertised it. one thing is for sure, there were a heckofalot less flakey buyers back then!
@@chillpillology haha!! Dude. The 10 speed with the curly handle bars too I am sure. Pretty much yes. Less flakey buyers and people not trying to scam you or rob you as much.
Hey Marty! 30.000 views on mean street that's big time! 🎊 congradulations!! You are rolling 🤣 glad you like your music man and play it well! Keep 🪨 rocking !!
I bought a Mexican Van Halen guitar and I brought it back because the drop D screw was bent. I should have never done that I could have replace that screw and now I can't afford one. bummer!
Such a great guitar! So much more important than food the table! I always said to my ex girlfriend: you can break all the stuff in my house and hit me in the face, but don't break my guitars. Some stuff like Coca cola was thrown trough the room and there went something on em,but they survived it.So i know the feeling of keeping the instruments you love! Great job, keep it close to you man!Oh ,and whats that thing where the neck rests on? It's probably a soft sponge but t looks like a brick of stone!😅Yepp beautifull guitar and it sounds AWESOME!!🎸🎶🎼🔥
Food and GF’s are overrated. Haha! It’s a cork guitar block that my dog chewed so I cut it to look a little nicer. I need to replace it, it causes so much concern in my videos! 🤣 thanks for the comment man. 😎☮️
That thing under the neck that looks like a rock keeps freaking me out🤔 what's it made out of? it can't be a rock, it's got to be like a sponge and really soft😎
Lol. It’s a cork guitar neck rest that my freakin dog chewed up. So I cut it to look smooth again. I should just buy a new one for $15 bucks or so. I get a lot of questions about it. Hahahaha. 🤣🤣
ahh a 1970 born rocker like myself. i wld love to have one of those eb. i kinda prefer the peavey tho. i have 9 electric guitars one being a gibson les paul standard faded. an evh guitar is def a bucket list guitar. i can olny afford sub 1000 dlr guitars. cannot justify spending thousands on one guitar. just recently subbed ur channel. good content dude.
Thank you Carrie! Fortunately I snagged this one pretty affordably by luck. I think some guitar prides are just crazy now. I am always looking for a deal. Thanks for the comment and checking out the channel. I appreciate you!
Thanks for sharing. That’s a sic guitar. I still don’t have one of those, but a boy can dream! Great demo video. Love your sound too. What’s the rig in this video? Any pedals?
Thank you! I use a Fractal AX8 when recording for you tube. Direct in to a focusrite scarlet and pro tools. I am using a Friedman BE model and Celestion 4x12 impulse response. All FX were added in the mix with protools. Just delays, chorus and a little verb. Basic stuff. I appreciate you’re support and complement. 😎🥂
Still don't understand why some high end guitar companies don't countersink the tremolo cover the way they do the other control cavities. Like how much more does it cost to do the extra routing? Maybe they just count on people taking off and leaving off the tremolo cavity cover? I think its a bit ridiculous that they countersink the covers on $300 Ibanez but not a $2500 EBMM.
Real nice guitar , great that you kept hold of it too. I remember trying one , but was surprised how big the heel joint was ! Would still consider getting one though , it sounded great.
I bought an Amber Flame in '91 when they dropped. I had it for eight years but had to sell it in a pinch. I regret it to this day. It is still the best guitar I've ever owned. It blows away all EVH guitars that came after, and I like the early Peavey USAs.
I had one of these I bought new in 92,(I was 26)…but I sold it a couple of years later..I have regretted that decision every day since….It was a great guitar..I still have a couple of Charvel’s from 89 though….Those little nicks and dings add character..Cool axe…very cool that you held onto it…
Thank you man! I regret some sales too. I sold my Peavey Wolfgang. Patent pending to buy a ring for my wife (at the time) trying to work out problems. Come to find out she was the problem. I shoulda kept the Peavey. Lol. Now both are gone. Difference is I miss the Peavey.
I'm a hack, so I'm not sure. But I think it's because he rolled it back some, and got that nuance. ?? The guy is a friggin BEAST on guitar. He crushes the Van Halen tones.
Hey Rick, it’s just the way the pickups sound in the middle position. And Jimmy is right. I just rolled back to clean it up a bit. No single coil. Just the magic EBMM pickups in the middle position. I always thought Ed had a piezo but it was the middle position.
@@gillhodges7267 I think that’s right. Plugged in too. I was really just talking about that “live sound of Ed’s with the music man. So Distinct from that era. 👍☮️
'92 was a great year . I bought my first Strat , a black Japanese hardtail model that sadly and much to my regret I sold on some years later , still miss that guitar ! Anyway , so pleased you still have your Ernie Ball , it sounds awesome as is your playing , cheers Marty .
Thanks Rachel. True the early 90’s were strong years for gear. I really started collecting stuff in the era and it became an addiction. Haha. Thanks for the compliment and checking out the channel! 😎🥂
